- Sculpting a head in Nomad Sculpt using the Loomis Method - Part 1 - Basic scaling
I've been sketching for decades using a book to guide me called 'Drawing the head and hands' by Andrew Loomis.
The Loomis method is a technique using simple shapes and measured landmarks to sculpt a human head. It starts with a ball, breaks it into four equal sections with two lines and then uses the created measurements to place facial features.
I thought I'd take that learning and use it with Nomad Sculpt on the iPad and share it in a series here on CZcams.

#nomadapp #nomadsculpting #loomismethod #sculptingahumanhead - Věda a technologie
The LOOMIS Method is how I learned to draw heads from my Mum! She learnt to draw heads form the book in the 1950's and 60's. This video is an attempt to use that same method to create a basic head in Nomad Sculpt. It's the first in a series of sculpting videos and as much as we use Nomad Sculpt, you can apply these teachings to any 3D sculpting software.
I actually got as a birthday gift in 1979 a book that had very similar illustrations to Loomis’ called Bridgman’s Drawing from Life or something. Wish I could find it, but it is probably at the bottom of a box in storage.
Every stroke, even a perceived incorrect one, can result in transcending the realm of effort, into art.
Exactly what I was looking for, a Nomad lesson that has the lesson and level of skill to hold my attention as an artist who's been been studying the human anatomy for years. You go fast enough to let me pause and rewind if need be, but keep me focused on tricks, tips, suggestions and thoughts on the way to getting to the end goal. Well done.
I have never sculpted before on my new iPad Pro. Your videos are a excellent resource for me a newbie. I just retired and discovered a new found passion using Nomad. I am navigating the Nomad interface and wondered if there are gestures for unselecting tools, and snapping objects and locking screen views…thanks again for providing a 70 year old man an opportunity to excercise the mind with a fun creative process learning Nomad.
Great stuff! Always looking forward to your Nomad tutorials. 👍
Thanks so much for this. I'm getting my teens into sculpting and this is perfect!
Thank you for the video, I was stuck on sculpting heads, thanks to you gave me a strategy.👍
Thanks for this series!!!
ohhh I was looking for this! thanks a lot.
Nice video, Glen! My “Loomis” ended up being the George Bridgeman books, which I poured over non-stop. I actually got to see a few of his original drawings during a visit to the Art Student’s League when I lived in NYC.
900th like :D Just working my way through the Nomad course now and these Loomis Method videos has been super helpful!
Cool as always. Thanks Glen.. 👍🤜😁
Look forward to the next one
So much value in your video! Thanks you so much!
Thank you, I really appreciate your feedback
Amazing video. Thank you for the head template … also found your alpha stamps foe skins on your page. Great work !
Looking for part 2 can’t find it realized this was posted today, how strange keep them up good stuff
Thank you for all your help brother!
Happy to help!
Finally after a few months of bugging lol. Thanks alot Glen
Hahahahah
Great job, man. More tutorial, please.
Thank you for this. I just got this app and I love it. its easy to use, and more importantly fun to use.
No problem, it is a great app, I absolutely love it.
Thank you for this it's helpful, I've been trying to sculpt a head. How do you blend everything together to the body I could never figure it out..could you do that in the next one! Ty!
Can't wait for your Lumafusion videos
I see you offer a course so I just just purchased the beginner NomadSculpt course and I’ll look for answers to my questions as I explore the software. 😀
Awesome video, lots of great information! Thank you! Where can I find the "proportion measuring rulers"?
Thank you very much
It's a pleasure!
Looks like very useful video! I appreciate you shared us this tutorial.
Where can we download the guide ?
I love the Loomis book, proko is also great. But Jack Hamm was my introduction to drawing the head as a teen in the 90's, Glen Vilppu solidified it early on.
Absolute. I have all the Jack Hamm stuff on scanned PDFs from somewhere
thanks again
You are very welcome.
so, do you think this could be applied to any realistic head if we adjust the proportions?
also ,how many parts will this series be? cant wait for the next one!
When using the Gizmo tool how did you get the red blue and yellow sticks on there with the Gizmo for measuring?
Thanks a lot for such excellent tutorial. the template link is broken. can yo please check? thanks.
The top line is the hair line, the second line is the brow, not the top of the eye. the eyes are more between that line and half way to the nose.
Awesome tutorial, thank you! One thing I struggle with is getting the differences between male and female heads correct. Would love to see you address that in this series.
Good call. I’ll add that in. Children, teens and the female head.
@@SouthernGFX Great, thank you so much!
I may be doing it wrong, but I downloaded your guide file and tried to import it to nomad and nothing shows up, I’d there a special way to use it?
Thanks for your video, I love it. But may I have the template? since it is not in dropbox anymore
Apologies the link was broken. However If you want the head template I use in this video you can find it in our Resources Hub. In order to access the hub please click here:

I know I’m late to the party, how can I make one of those guides? I tried to download it, but it said the file had been deleted. I’m struggling with heads, but this method just clicked for me. A guide would be a huge help. Thanks for the great video!
how did you made the guide lines? Thank you
Can we get an updated link to the source files so we can follow along?
How to get those blue, red and yellow lines?
How to do mask clear on latest version ?
Can I make an airplane propeller with Nomad Sculpt?
how does the Selmask leave that line for you? When i hit clear it does nothing. Am I missing a step? Please help
He's masking all but a thin line, then using scale to make the unmasked area smaller.
As Ron Lemen discovered some 20 years ago the pure Loomis method doesn't work for 3d as it creates a insufficient skull volume. Gottfried Bammes head abstractions are better for sculptors imo.
I downloaded the guide folder and loaded it into Nomad but don’t see the guides.
Ever figure this out?
For the center line, instead of make a dent in the midle you could just polypaint it
That’s what I did after masking it polypainted it.
The head template is not available anymore.

Once the markings are done, save it as a "template". Thanks me later ;)
How come you skipped the part where it went wrong with the trim because that’s happening with me
Just trying to keep the edit to a reasonable time. I’ve covered it in loads of videos. Are you sorted with it now? It only started happening after radial was introduced so if a few people are snuggling we could cover it again and get the developer involved perhaps.
@@SouthernGFX "edit to a reasonable time"?
The link to the head template is deleted! Please help reshare
Will do. I’ll sort it out this morning. Sorry about that
Is the link fixed?
