The only explanation I can think of for why they changed Mihawk's sword to be smaller is because it was too big and the 4Kids editors felt intimidated by it in comparison.
It’s because it was a cross, same with his tiny knife getting changed to just being like a stick of butter 4KIDS FORBID a cross get misrepresented…or used as a weapon or whatever

They could've easily censored kuina's death by making her tashigi adding a personal mix to their reltionship/rivalry with them going down different paths towards becoming the strongest swordsman but that's to much to ask from 4kids writing
The cross just being changed to just one vertical gold stick on Mihawk’s necklace is taking me out 😭😭😭
Genuinely ridiculous too, as it was A SWORD. Now it has no hand guard and is literally a useless pocket knife. I guess it could showcase Mihawk’s skill but even an east blue pirate would take advantage of such an obvious weakness.

On every Sanji scene yes, they always had to put that damn lollipop to cover the fact he smokes, and made the area around him blurry to cover the smoke, you can still see smoke coming out in a lot of 4kids Sanji scenes 😂

I just can’t get over the fact they mistranslated his name to Zolō, which how it’s pronounced in Japanese, while it’s Zoro in English.💀With it being a clear nod to the Spanish vigilante of the same name.
I'm pretty sure it was to avoid copyright issues with zorro. Because they also do it in the manga

Im not a japanese speaker but from what ive read it has something to do with how the speak R and L can sound extremely close and i believe the Katakana is even written the same. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure just had a similar thing in Part 8 as the Rokakaka Fruit was how it was said for a majority of the manga before correctly being changed to Lokakaka Fruit. Its the reverse in One Piece where they mistranslated his name. By time it was rightly corrected, Viz decided to keep the name changed for consistency in english printings. So yeah, you can't really get a correctly translated official version; not from Viz anyways unless they do a reprint after the series is complete.

As a kid watching this I literally thought that Tashigi and Kuina were the same person especially since they had the same voice actor Tashigi name hadn’t been revealed yet and Zolo even thought that she was Kuina. So the way 4kids set this up made people believe that they were the same person.
I thought so too. Was really curious to know if they found out if zoro would find out about her being his long lost friend who he swore to become the best swordsman was fighting against him in opposing sides when that wasn't the case.
Same. I thought she'd somehow lost memories of him or something, which was also why she never became anywhere near as good as Zoro with a sword.
But a friend in school who was watching the og subbed told me that she's actually dead, and the dub changed it.

Something to consider is that the manga and anime are like this as well, some of the scenes are a lot more graphic in the manga (when Zoro gets cut by mihawk his entire torso is slashed and you can see how bad the cut was, also zeff eats his own leg instead of getting it cut off by a chain)
The implications in the sub is that he ate his leg in order for him to survive that long without the food that he game Sanji.

Every time I read “Zolo” in the official translation I die inside. The poor translation had gone on for so long, it became impossible to change it to the proper Zoro without confusing casual readers or watchers.
Edit: Not as bad as the German dub’s “Luffy” (rhymes with puffy or stuffy). I shiver at the thought.

I do not like the weird english pronounciation of Ruffy myself. I would have preferred it, if it was pronounced with german vowels (either /u/ or /y/), that would have been much closer to the original Japanese. But i do like the /r/ in the beginning (just not the english r). The english "Luffy" is also not perfect. But "Zolo" is just ridiculous, since it is clearly a reference to "Zorro", the sword-wielding "proto-superhero" of the early 20th century.
It’s not because of a poor translation. In the 80s their was a sword mans named zorro. They named him zolo to avoid copy right. It was quite clear what is name was but they feared copyright so they changed it

What I like about the japanese openings is that they don't spoil episodes. And before you feel like replying and expose your inability to read properly, read the entire comment, including the edit. That way you will understand what this comment is about and don't have to feel as stupid as the 100 people who already replied with the same redundant comment you are about to write.

I forgot that Sanji sounded like that in the 4Kids version ☠️. I still enjoy the 4Kids opening tho for nostalgia reasons but I'll never forget the day Toonami played the real version and hearing everyone sound different (mostly Luffy and Sanji) and then seeing the japanese opening.
