A college style is a good idea. I'll do something similar, but I'll also sign undrafted rookies every preseason as "walk ons" However, I can't sign them the next year even if they're still there. You can sign them and send them to the practice squad as a "red shirt" but it has to be their rookie year.

Crazy part is that’s the hidden secret in madden. Drafted teams are guaranteed to win at least 1 if you draft correctly, before the first draft classes rookie contract is up. Couldn’t explain it for years but, if you try and develop players from current draft and build around them, you won’t win. But if you build around the next pick or later, you start getting hidden devs and within 4 years you’ll win one
