- Outline released this video in 1981. The iconic song that describes what happens when a giant cicada invades Five (...and most of Drummoyne....). What better way to celebrate the song than having a costume party and having all of your friends turn up and have fun....a great day and a very strange video....
I first heard this song on the radio while driving from Byron Bay to the Gold Coast over the old Burringbar Range on a rainy night. There are moments in life that you never forget.
The Js used to play this all the time ... a pal of mine attempted recording a version of it early on , and failed to get the grunt of their live performance ... They went elsewhere and managed this low key Aussie classic
My heart aches listenening to this. What a different and beautiful world it was back then.
If only I appreciated it at the time.
At least I still have the ep. Ee-ee-ee-p.
Glad you like it. It was a great time in Aussie rock...we had a ball and hopefully the crowds did too..cheers
Ahhh Sydney in the 80s. We have lost so much.
I’m a 2000s kid and this is all I want to experience.
I heard that!
What in the f_ck happened?
Unless you lived here in Sydney during the 80’s, you really couldn’t explain to someone who didn’t what it was like, too many things about that time in Sydney that were good, that have since changed for the worst, to mention but a few, would be an injustice to the rest , im thankful I was there though! ✊🏻🦗🇦🇺
Outline fuckt up once jjeffBarrett Bass player n drummer DRYNESS were replaced
7th
My father grew up in Five Dock as well as my brother and I. They still reside there. I managed to get an original vinyl copy that we play from time to time.
and they survived the cicada how good
Takes me back to days of Double Jay 1539am radio in Sydney, great days with so many great bands played on air like Outline Radio Birdman,Lime Spiders,Hard Ons etc
I was a regular at Fivedock skatepark in 1981. I have this album on vinyl too. Love it.
Loved Outline...Cicada, Sex AIDS, Fire in the Ghost Train, Security Set.....a mad bunch of musicians that were good at rockin the house 80’s style.
Great song!! I really want that Oberheim OB-1 Synth too!! This was during the the continuing hay-day Australian Pub Rock before councils started lowering the boom on venues. You could go to just about any pub and some cool band would be playing.
RIP Alex Lakyev - miss you chief!
Well done. This song is as inspired, hilarious and demented as I remember it. Great piece of nostalgia and excellent piece of Australiana.
Memories are made of this...AND GIANT CICARDAS!
im an old DBH boy. I remember the fans of this song had a'' dance'' to go with it. another lifetime ago.lol.
I noticed this song made #2 on Triple J's Hottest 100 list in 2014 (after "Khe Sanh"). Well done, Phil
And #99 in 1989.
Should have be number 1
I lived at five dock when you guys brought this song out.
Great guitar work ! Killer demented riffing !
I loved going to see Outline Saturday nights at Gladesville and am one of the (probably) lucky (?) few that has a copy of their original "Maybe it's a Game"' LP with the snakes & ladders games inside & bonus 12"ep! The majority of people I meet who live in the vicinity of Five Dock (from the decade) don't know song let alone the band ..... may have to get myself a record player for Xmas!!!
NB: Its great to find some of the older less successful Sydney bands on UTUBE ...
+PAULA MACRAE yep Paula. The 'Pickled Parrot' bar at 'The Bayview Tav' on Victoria Rd. Those were the days. Greetings from Bris.
I grew up in Five Dock....
Played rugby for the "Dirty Reds" of Drummoyne and the Cicada was the unofficial team song. Loved it. Played it interminably.
Thank you so much for posting this and each year I request it on 3rrr when I resubscribe. I do vaguely remember the video on Rage back when it was released or shortly after but didn't realise how bloody well produced it was for that period.
Fast forward to 2019 and there's no serene to invade, no Houses left, and no Rock'N'Roll anymore.. :( :(
Days you could see a band any night.
costs lots to live in five dock now
Hi Ewen, glad you enjoy it...cheers!👍
EE-EE-EE-EE!
I hear you Grant. It certainly isn’t the same anymore....apartments, massive traffic and lock out laws....sad but true. Although the giant Cicada is versatile....look out Gladys!
this is so delightfully odd
Glad you like it Thomas . It was 1981....we had a lot of fun...lots of great gigs...cheers
Aussie punk at its FINEST! \m/ EE EE EEEEE!
Was just looking for this!
Was there a promo video for the 1980 single "Cities"? Loved the song, but never saw the video.
ha ha....5 years later I noticed your enquiry. Yes there was a video for Cities.
If anyone knows where I could buy a copy of this I am dying to get my hands on it!!
I have no idea where you might purchase a copy, although we are in the process of looking into releasing it on Spotify/iTunes etc. Stay in touch....cheers, Phil
@@biggersworld7425 ooh good to hear, would love to be able to have it on Spotify!
The pub rock scene was insane back then. It spawned so many Aussie rock classics. Too bad the snowflakes got into power and money talks, right?
