❤ I play this masterpiece all the time ! its written by Leonard Cohen and given more Life and Beauty by the wonderful and extremely talented Jennifer Warnes who was at one time Leonards backup singer and partner in Song ! ❤
When Warnes came out with her album Famous Blue Raincoat, I got it. But for some reason I never bought anything more of hers. Now, with CZcams to watch, I see (and hear) so many wonderful performances from her. She has one of the most expressive voices in all of music. Her interpretation of everything she sings is just superb.
The fact that for most of her peak performing years, Jennifer did not have a recording contract shows the far below par status of "popular music". She had/ has a superb voice and I have always regarded it as a tragedy that she had so few studio albums. Whilst at the same time , bands and solo artists, with no talent, who were had strong recording contracts were promoted by record labels and their offerings were only fit for the trash bin. It seems that such wonderful talent, that she and many others have/had, just slip under the radar of record company attraction. Such a pure, sweet, clear angelic voice. She has been on my permanent record, cd etc collection for the better part of 45 years. Just love her, and her music is timeless.
Real talent is often lost to dumb ass recording exec's and their minions. Perfect example is the 'they can push a whole bunch of video buttons real fast' MTV editors. It's a crime.
Jennifer, you have a beautiful angelic voice. I can't go on in my life ever NOT hearing your voice, at least once a week on saturday nights when i am calm. You have a beautiful soothing voice. Thank you for making us all happy. You have been a gift to us all.
I posted this because I love Jennifer Warnes' voice and style.I have her CD now Famous Blue Raincoat, where she sings Leonard Cohen songs .I absolutely adore her duet of Joan of Arc with Leonard, But I have to say, Leonard is my man..I have very song, every poem, and it is a lifetime's challenge to delve into his inticate meanings..I have also met the man, which changed my life.
I needed so much to have nothing to touch, I've always been greedy that way. A personal favorite line from LC. I'm stunned how much this stranger that doesn't feel stranger at all has given me. Oh, and wonderful job Jennifer!
SHE'S AS GREAT A POET IN HER SINGING AS HE IS IN HIS WRITING. HE HAS ON HIS ARM A FALCON OF UNMEASURABLE BEAUTY AS IT SOARS BEYOUND ALL THINGS. "TO BE HIS ONE, TO BE HIS ONLY BRIDE".
For those of you asking, the name of this song is 'The Night Comes On.' It is a bonus track on the reissue of Jennifer's album titled 'Famous Blue Raincoat' - Jennifer sings The Songs of Leonard Cohen - a consistently fine album.
One of the great singers with great themes! I guess she didn't get a better contract because she wanted to keep her freedom to write what she believed in. Awesome!
Just beautiful...well done Kevin for mastering the technology and providing us with a wonderful video...I absolutely adore Jennifer Warnes and look forward to more "offerings" from you and Chrissie...
Someone asked the name of the song. It is " Night Comes On", a poem written by Leonard Cohen, and sung by him on the Various Positions album. I have a feeling he has not sung this bleak song in concert. I find the mother's words very powerful.."Go back to the world..." Jennifer Warnes was one of Leonard's backing singers, and I love her voice, and the way it complements his. She was instrumental in getting Leonard's songs more widely known when she recorded the album Famous Blue Raincoat
I CHILD HAS TO SE HIS PAREND ITHINK I HAS TO SE MINE CHILD AND LOVE HOPE DO YOU THINK SO DEAR JENIFER IT TIME TO SEE US IN THE NAME OF LOVEOF A CHILD WAS BORN FOR OUR LOVE THANK YOU BLESSINGS WOUTER JOANNES
Are you for real?! Anyway, from wikipedia: "Cohen was born on 21 September 1934 in Westmount, an English-speaking area of Montreal, Quebec, into a middle-class Jewish family. His mother, Marsha (Masha) Klonitsky,] was the daughter of a Talmudic writer, Rabbi Solomon Klonitsky-Kline of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry. His paternal grandfather, whose family had emigrated from Poland ... His father, Nathan Cohen, who owned a substantial clothing store, died when Cohen was nine years old."
Record company bean counters rule supreme over talent. Andrew Loog Oldham took the Stones the record exec that turned down the Beatles. Van Morrison said the early days were better when the suits didn't have a clue.
We were fighting in ukraine When they signed this agreement That nobody else had to die There was this terrible sound... Putin! You promised to play. I like to pretend that he was wrong... But the night comes on...
well, its clearly a more reliable source of information than you. Out of interest, is it that you cannot admit that you were wrong, or is it the fact that he is Canadian, or that he is Jewish that you have a problem with? (oh, and btw, I am not Canadian, not that it makes any difference).

Sweet Lordie! What an amazing voice she has. So pure and yet so strong.
One of the greatest voices of the last four decades, and the ultimate LC interpreter.

She was raised in Anaheim where I also grew up..

You said it all. She is simply amazing. Top female singer and top 5 singer, songwriter in my book. Maybe top 3!
Jennifer, you have a beautiful angelic voice. I can't go on in my life ever NOT hearing your voice, at least once a week on saturday nights when i am calm. You have a beautiful soothing voice. Thank you for making us all happy. You have been a gift to us all.
Amen..
Surely the finest interpreter of Leonard Cohen's poems/songs, other than the man himself.
Lennie and Jennie were made for each other.
I met Jen when we were in high school. Early on you knew her voice was a gift from God.
Leonard Cohen, my favorite poet, Jennifer Warnes, my favorite singer!
such a beautiful voice. Soothing, relaxing, and meaningful. Thank you Jennifer.
yes Robert. You are absolutely correct. She does have an Angelic voice. I am attracted to it very much. She deserves more recognition.
A voice to die for, and the good news is we the listeners reap the joy of the vocal talent of this wonderful lady!
I guarantee this video will always bring a tear to my eye. Especially the last 30 seconds.

Cohen wrote so many great lyrics..what a wonderful poet..
Hab Sie schon lange nicht mehr gehört und fast vergessen, wie gut Sie ist.. Wunderbar, Miss Warnes
I needed so much to have nothing to touch, I've always been greedy that way. A personal favorite line from LC. I'm stunned how much this stranger that doesn't feel stranger at all has given me. Oh, and wonderful job Jennifer!
That has always been one of my favorite lines in any song.
I've never heard this song before, thanks for posting it, It's beautiful song and nobody can illuminate a song and warm it like Jennifer.

Jennifer could make 'Wheels on the bus' sound lovely!!

Her version of “Ballad of the Runaway Horse” is masterpiece. Once you have heard it, you’ll never want to hear any other.

Ah, half of Canada is Irish. We are so gifted in everything we do, including having many children, that the world is better off by us.
When I have felt your pain, and you have felt mine.

Jenny is all about late night manifestations of emotions waiting their time...bob
We Irish know how to write our feelings.
He's performed it live many times.

No regrets. Her plan was perfect. As is she.
What song is this? I've never heard it before and it's lovely.
„Night Comes On“ by Leonard Cohen
Is the name of the song Leonard Cohen?
Nope, it's „Night Comes On“
(written by Leonard Cohen).
