- During a very tense dinner debate about town vs. government control of the hospitals, Robert ironically finds himself being immediately rushed to the hospital himself after suffering a burst ulcer at the dinner table. Even for Downton, this dinner has been particularly eventful!
From Series 6 Episode 5: Andy confesses to Thomas that he is illiterate, and accepts Barrow's offer to educate him in secret. Edith hires a female editor and also develops a romance with Bertie Pelham. Violet persuades the Minister of Health, Neville Chamberlain to attend dinner at Downton. Robert suddenly coughs up blood at the table, due to his ulcer busting and is rushed to the hospital immediately.

I was never more shocked and horrified than when out of nowhere Robert started violently spewing blood at what I considered a very boring dinner. Bravo, downton abbey
I was trying to find the words, thank you.
That's one way to liven things up ...
@@Anticrystal88 nothing turns a dinner party around quite like projectile vomiting blood
Katrin Baumgarten I remember that I’d agreed to wait and watch this episode with my cousin a couple nights after it aired, but when the night came I couldn’t wait and watched it alone. I didn’t tell her this for fear I’d hurt her feelings and rewatched it with her later. I had to pretend to be shocked in seeing this a second time.
lmao I thought I was watching an episode of GoT
This is why a gentleman always invites his physician to attend dinner parties.
🤣🤣🤣
Well, it wasn't really a dinner party. It was a dinner to discuss (ironically) whether or not to reform the hospital.
Wait is this an actual thing back then? Inviting your physicians?
yes, usually someone goes down at these things
Because you can't trust the cook.
Robert’s ulcer bursts and the first thing he does is assure Cora he loves her very much. Aww
I can't believe that in the original script they sang a musical number together with blood bubbling from his gaping mouth!
Very VERY much.
It was such a dramatic scene, and when Robert tells Cora he loves her, my eyes burn. Later on we see Mrs. Crawley comforting the Dowager. PEACE to ALL ... and STAY SAFE and HEALTHY.
It's what youd do if you thought you were dying and you had one breath left
@You stole my burrito, Charlie no character in Downton is a paragon of virtue, except for Sybil, that's what makes this so amazing.
Did anyone notice that the doctor immediately called on Thomas to help, because they worked together and he knows about Thomas’s medical background. He knew he’d be the only one there ready to jump into action.
Lovely little bit of continuity there. It's the small details like that set Downton apart. It will stand the test of time.
Also Lord Merton and Lady Merton
Not because Thomas was standing closest by?
You people are beginning to really believe all this garbage.
Watched all the Downton series for the 4th time & im seeing these things I ever saw before. Like bates release from prison in the car with Anna how anxious he is just to see Downton & the relationships Ms P & Daisy have.
Cora always appears so quiet and demure, almost meek, but she has a backbone of steel when the situation demands.
Silk hiding steel.
Holy..... Cora is the perfect Wife and partner most men want to have. Very calm, comforting, reasonable and soft on normal day but very strong, rational and composed when urgent thing happened. Now i only wish I will be worth for someone like her.
And I agree!
And she's always ready to hide a body
@@andreahoward9421 I mean they did that during the first season.
Robert: *projectile coughs blood across the dinner table* Downton Abbey: *Plays happy theme song with only slightly ominous undertones*
Lexy Neal LMAO!
Nah. It's more dramatic than you give it credit for. There's a sense of urgency and chaos.
kcbh24 shhh just let me have the joke...😂 of course I know the show has variations of the main theme for just about every situation in the show. I can definitely hear the slight change in tempo and the dark chords behind the main theme. Lol I just thought I’d poke fun especially since we both know how it ends ✌🏾😉
It's all about subtlety
Zaqwan Badli I agree 😁👌🏾
It’s super lucky that Robert was surrounded by a doctor, a nurse, and an army medic at the exact time his ulcer burst.
😄
Yes, but they can't do a lot.
I love a lot about this scene. I love that Violet's first reaction is to reach for Robert; despite him being an adult, with grandchildren of his own, she never stops being a mother. That's her baby having a crisis. I love when he tells Cora how much he loves her. I love when the doctor calls for Thomas. UGH! This scene!
@Quaker 2019 I know that.
@Quaker 2019 and? does that change the fact that he loves her now (and fell in love with her less than an year after they were married? “not a year, not as long as that”)
@Quaker 2019 ???? you’re making no sense. Yes, it’s the truth that he didn’t love her at the beginning, but he has loved her for decades now and there’s no point to your comment
omg yes he calls for thomas! j did not notice that wow
It’s so sweet that he called for Thomas. I love Thomas
This was very accurate. My father’s ulcer burst in 1997. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, scarier than waking up as an almost 16 year old kid in the middle of the night to retching noises in the bathroom and discovering your father slumped over throwing up blood. It about scarred me for life. Then the stubborn old man that he is he tried to make me call off the ambulance saying he felt better. I screamed and stood my ground saying NO. Had I called it off, we would’ve lost him that night. So this downton scene really resonated with me. It’s nothing to play around with!!
Exactly! This scene scared the hell out of me and my sister. Our father's ulcer burst when we were out with our mom, who found him in their bedroom bathroom after we got home. The scream she let out and the amount of blood still haunts me. He survived the ulcer but not what caused it unfortunately. It wasn't until years later when I saw this that I finally realized how blood had gotten so high up on the walls.
@@Rakushi_Snea OMG I’m so sorry that happened. I honestly had no idea that could happen and wondered if the scene was exaggerated or not but it sounds like not!! i remember when my dad had a major seizure out of nowhere when I was little and how horrifying and scary and out of control that felt. Wouldn’t wish such things on anyone. Every day is a gift with our loved ones indeed.
yeah girl it was caused by the demon tinkering with the human body
@@Rakushi_Snea yeah
My dads ULC ER will never burst probably mine will probably never to
Aw, Isobel comforting Violet saying “we’ll go together” proves their friendship ☺️
Also, as a mother she already knows what it is to lose her son.
I’m so glad that the Dowager Countess Grantham had a friend to lean on.
I loved how the mother who lost a son immediately comforted the one possibly losing her own. A beautiful loop of circumstance.
This literally shocked me more than any GoT scene.
Then you have not seen The Red Wedding
@@reettamalin1991 I actually have. But this scene is much more shocking.
If it literally shocked you, an electrician should inspect your television or computer setup.
@@kristoffsayswhat right! U KNEW something bad was going to happen but not what at the red wedding but this scene was OUT OF NOWHERE. One of the best in the series.
Honestly it was so out of know where. Amazing acting
One of the two scenes of Downton that actually frightened me. Never seen the Dowager or Carson scared 😢😢😢
True. We saw her grief over Sybil, but that was after.
Which was the other?? It freaked me out too!
@@jessicaroberts8250 Sybil's death.

Sybil’s death
LOL...that "frightened" you? How silly you are.
The way all of the medical professionals including Isobel and Thomas jump into action is so admirable. Forever will be an admirer of Isobel’s ingenuity and determination.
That was the best place for him to have the emergency. He had an army medic, doctor, nurse, and minister of health at his side. That saved his life.
He may have married Cora for her money but he loved her with a fierceness and passion many men will not ever feel about their women. When he told her how much he loved her in this scene, it struck me to the core cuz that's how much I love my partner and I would have said the same thing.
So... just out of curiosity, did you happen to have an affair with your maid as well?
Virtual Warp lol
Virtual Warp Robert did not have an affair.
Nicholas Rue watch the series again. Kissing a maid and nearly slept with her is an affair
@@jehannethompson1432
True that.
This shocked the hell out of me the first time I saw it. I thought “when did Tarantino direct this episode.”
It wasn't his ulcer. Daisy Domergue poisoned Robert's tea. ;)
You're funny!
hahaha Indeed!🤣
I know this is supposed to be a joke, but Tarantino will never use gore like this, this is more like George RR Martin
😄!
I love how much Tom has evolved from being out of his element to being so much in his element that he can speak confortably and on equal terms with a minister.
'Life is short. Death is sure.' One of the best drama series of all time. Carson cares for Robert. This scene always takes me. I need a Carson and a Mrs. Hughes in my life
"Your enthusiasm is getting the better of your manners." I must use that line sometime, it's so perfect!
What the Dowager said in French:
"Il faut reculer pour mieux sauter"
One must step back to jump better.
Thanks for that information.
Thanks a lot
THANK YOU!! Literally searched through the comments until I found it.
I just love how despite in this time of the series Mary and Edith were "pulling each other's hair" THAT single exchange of gazes unite them as sisters when a family member is sick and on the verge of dying.
Strange, isn't it, how it takes trauma and tragedy to pull family members together?
They were still sisters and deep down they loved each other. And during emergencies they put away their mutual dislike for each other and stick together
Guess you missed the part only minutes later when Mary overhears about Marigold, and files it away to use against Edith. The "uniting" lasted only a second and wasn't real.
@@su-rv2uq Their moment of unity was real, even though it was incomplete and momentary.
4:50 "don't forget lady Edith" sounds like it has happened before lol
To be fair, Edith doesn't have a lady's maid.
Even when her father’s life was in serious danger, and she was expected to go look after him, the help had to be reminded of her existence.
Just what I thought, he needed to emphasise not to forget her 😆

Omg this comment has me ROFL🤣
Everyone was so alert. Isobel was already gathering the napkins even before Robert fell. Thomas caught him as he fell. Doctor Clarkson already knew it was ulcer and to lay him on his left side. Carson immediately went to call the ambulance.
Violet: Oh, don't you enjoy a good fight?
Neville Chamberlain: I'm not sure I do, really.
I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE, JULIAN FELLOWES
69. Nice.
“Life is short, Death is sure.” Wise words Mr. Carson. Wise words.
I love how on _Downton Abbey_ anyone-even historical figures-can be blackmailed over the silliest little thing no matter how many years after the fact.
It was a big deal back in the day. The Dreadnought Hoax, the event with the warship that Tom mentioned, was a huge deal. It was only the prankster, Horace de Vere Cole, being a charming man that prevented the Royal Navy from tossing his ass in jail.
For context, the warship was HMS Dreadnought. As in the ship type, it revolutionized naval warfare during the pre-WW1 period. It’s be the equivalent of lying your way onto an American Carrier.
A bts interview said that they told the rest of the cast that he was going to burst his ulcer but the reaction was completely genuine. Also, the dye they used in the blood was shot farther than the protective covering they put on the floor so the carpet is permanently stained.
GraceAnn Trevillian they knew for sure his ulcer was going to burst , but not blood coming out of his mouth
@@suryavir2598 My bad, you are correct! I'll edit it
The best way to get a genuine reaction from the actors
GraceAnn Trevillian Can’t you just hear the docent? “Many of you will recognize the dining room where many a fine meal was enjoyed amidst dramatic banter, and just off the room here....if you look down, is the stain from the fake blood spewed by Lord Grantham when his ulcer burst *click flash whirr*. * lie down for selfie *. We move upstairs to the Gallery....”
@@davidthaler7018 "It adds to the character of the place!"
"Life is short, death is sure...." A reminder to us all. No amount of fame and fortune can keep us away from death. So cherish life. Remember to be good and do good. Love yourself and one another. 😊
Han2far To love as nice as that sounds it isn’t quite accurate. Fortune and fame can’t stop death, however they can extend your life considerably. Today, money and power can move you to the front of a transplant list and get you substantially better care. Even in this scene at a fancy dinner party he has the minister of health on one side and a trained doctor on the other. A simple peasant would have surely died.
@@aaronz8571Thank you for sharing. I can't deny what you've said. Money can certainly make things happen. However let's just focus on cherishing life as much as we can. Death will definitely come no matter if we can save ourselves with our wealth. Hopefully we can fill our life with love, kindness and compassion before death comes. 😊
The way Mary and Edith looked at each other was a great moment
Dowager: "Don't you enjoy a good fight?"
Chamberlin: "I'm not sure I do really."
Ooooo foreshadowing.
Nice
Yes as this was after the first world war
Just as Mrs Patmore predicted he would become prime minister one day.
Meanwhile in Germany
Adolf Hitler: “Excellent” pulls out a map of Czechoslovakia
German army officers: face palm
At 0:39 Maggie Smith’s “Robeeeert” annoyed tone is so funny and so well acted! In that “Robert” you can hear all the “ because I said so, don’t have time to waste arguing with Carson, just have it done MY WAY”! The Dowager really IS Downton Abbey, and Maggie Smith is absolutely the greatest Star!
Finally, the lines between Robert and Cora, although the circumstances, are so beautiful. Their relationship definitely changed after this. They took each other for granted, not after this! Cora's love was already immensely, but Robert realised what he had!
Not just that. Cora blamed Robert for their daughter's death. And she wasn't entirely wrong to feel that way.
Aweee tom’s reaction was genuinely sad. He’s the one that gets up in panic and you can see him in the background trying to figure out what to do. 🥺🥺🥺
Gets lost in all the absolute chaos and horror of the rest of the episode but having Neville freaking Chamberlain say he's "not sure" he enjoys "a good fight" is absolutely beautiful
He was the reason Churchill became Prime Minister, because Chamberlain, (who was Prime Minister before Churchill) wanting to appease Germany, even signed the Munich Agreement, giving the Nazis' a region of Czechoslovakia. Whether he was trying to buy time, or whether he was just another ineffective, weak politician, you can bet Germany would have considered him the latter and still would have attacked England. France was also appeasing Germany and look at what happened to them! Whatever human failings Churchill might have had; he was the right man for the job, at that time. I thought it was excellent how the dig at Chamberlain was written.
@@kibblenbits Chamberlain lived through WWI and saw what it did to Europe and especially England. No wonder he worked for peace. There's a good defense of Chamberlain in Patrick Buchanan's ""Churchill, Hitler, and the Unnecessary War...."
This is actually one of my favorite scenes in the series. One, because it's so shocking - not something anyone expected in this show. Two, because I love how after that moment of shock and horror, everyone jumps into action. Cora rushes to Robert and cradles his head in her lap, Isabel, Dr. Clarkson, and Tom all move to make him as safe and comfortable as they can until they can get the ambulance there to take him to hospital. Carson rings for the ambulance and then urges the others to get everything ready - Bates to get a few useful items out of Robert's room, Anna to get the ladies' coats, etc.
This family may squabble and snarl at each other, but when push comes to shove, they pull together.
I watched the scene repeatedly and I was very intrigued by everyone's role even those in the background.
you mean Thomas not Tom. Because Thomas was the first person to quickly spring into action and Clarkson called Thomas’ name
@@AC_RDR2_Q Quite right! I noticed later that I accidentally typed Tom instead of Thomas, but I kept forgetting to edit the comment.
@@aqueen04 Don’t worry about it:) i just thought you were one of those people who hated Thomas or something lol
Even Lord Merton hurried to offer Robert his jacket to keep warm. (As an aside, I love the moment before the dinner party when Bates jokes that the Minister of Health will just want to get through the evening alive.)
In spite of their daily petty antagonisms or maybe because of them, they all do their best to comfort each other in the face of tragedy.
Yes, it's refreshing to notice that they're not psychopathic.
Very real family dynamics. I speak from experience
This is true of most families, I’d say…

i just love how quickly Thomas springs into action. And the fact Dr Clarkson tells Thomas what to do, it’s sweet because it shows how they became closer after the war and how Thomas changed to be a better person and want to help people. Dr Clarkson knows how Thomas will spring into action and how he’s somewhat trained. It’s nice
This scene really did show the hidden depths of some of the characters who have always been a little difficult to read. You can really see the the Dowager as a loving and terrified mother as she's reaching out her arms, turning pale, trying to find something that will help. Then you have Tom jumping to his feet instantly, ready to rush in to help the man he came to deeply respect. Then Carson frozen in shock, stuttering instructions and almost bursting into tears because, as Mrs. Patmore said, all he loves was proven mortal after all. Even Robert, using his final moments to tell Cora, the woman he first married for her money, that he loved her. Amazing all around 👏
In movies and TV shows I've seen there has been "blood" that didn't look like blood and that diminished what was being watched. In this clip from "Downton Abbey" the blood actually looks real and makes the scene more powerful and believable.
@Andrew Brendan they got this far with the drama, they wouldn't mess this up 🥵
4:04 What makes this even more interesting is that all of the actors, other than Hugh Bonneville, had no idea this was going to happen! They knew that something was going to happen to him at dinner but they didn't know exactly what it was. So all of their reactions are 100% real!
Isobel despite arguing with the Dowager comforting her as she sees her son suffering...God I love this drama
I can not get over my love for Robert and Cora, and all Robert wanted in a time of crisis is Cora! *Die of love inside* 💜😍
I'm so proud of how far Tom has come, once upon a time he'd have never even entertained the idea of talking to a Conservative MP, let alone someone like Chamberlin, without deciding to berate them instead of this civil conversation
Ah yes, the time Robert exploded
Hahaha!
To quote Frank Reynolds: can I offer you a nice egg in this trying time?
the moment between Robert and Cora gets me every time
why is no one talking about the despair in the dowager’s eyes?
Fr, it would be a horrifying thing for a mother to see
This was a frightening scene, and as terrifying as it seems, ulcers can indeed burst with very nasty consequences. But the shock of what happened was lessened at 4:09 by how quickly Isobel, Doctor Clarkson, and Barrow jumped into action to help.
Yh my grans ulcer burst she went mad and the ulcer poisoned her body
And Cora and even Lord Merton as well.
it spoiled a most pleasant conversation. couldn't the devil schedule a little later?
the highlight of a mundane life spent in silent rage and passive complacence
In an earlier season:
*Carson spills something on Edith’s dress*
Edith: What about my dress?
Here:
Robert: *literally throws up blood on Cora*
Cora: *drops by his side and comforts him, ruining her outfit even more and not giving a damn*
I always liked Cora better, her and Roberts love is beautiful
Well it’s not really the same since it’s her husband
Two different characters. Two different interactions with entirely different relationships, ages, etc.
Edith was a self-involved young woman. Cora was a middle aged woman caring for her husband.
False equivalency.
@@levinsonmannion7208 he cheated on her!
WHAT ABOUT MY DRESS!
I love how Isobel goes into nurse mode, and then once Clarkson has it covered, she switches to comfort the Dowager Countess.
4:07 Elizabeth's (Cora's) shock is completely genuine here. No one realized the blood was going to travel that far. Hugh (Robert) says in his autobiography that they only had one take for this, and the director wanted major shock value for the audience. But Hugh's only goal was to try to get blood onto "his beloved tv wife" to see her face 🤣
Apparently the wardrobe department was furious, but no one else cared because the reactions were so real it helped elevate the scene to what it is.
The wardrobe department was so upset because Cora's dress was an antique and when they attempted to clean it between takes, the fabric disintegrated.
The most amazing thing is that the cast's shocked reaction is genuine. It wasn't planned for Hugh Bonneville to spit the prop blood so far during filming. It was the first take and they kept it. Sadly Lady Grantham's dress, which was a real vintage dress, was damaged beyond repair.
That’s such a shame!!! They should have known better than to make them wear real vintage dresses in a scene like this
I can't help laughing at how over the top it was.
I love how the script portrays Neville Chamberlain as non confrontational - alluding to what would later occur in Munich 1938.
Big props to Edith for not taking the bait when Mary said "Well, I don't know about bright" and smirked at her. Honestly, how old is Mary?! I'm so glad they're getting along in the second movie.

Missus Patmore hit the nail on the head about Carson being shaken to his core here. She needed more time to shine like this!
Probably the closest this show will ever get to GOT. I wasn't expecting it, but given how tensions were rising during the episode, I had a feeling something bad was on the horizon.
Robert, please don't bleed all over the dinner. There's a good fellow.
There's a good gentleman.
Okay, so I thought this was waaaaaay over-dramatic, but there’s a video elsewhere that has a doctor basically confirming that untreated ulcers actually can be so horrific and graphic. My horror at this scene has doubled.
Dowager Countess kinda have a point there, from 1910 onward, progress were made for the sake of having progress, there is no thought put on it. Demolition of various historical landmarks only to be replaced by Brutalist Architecture, the development of car-centric cities often destroying beautifully planned cities that's perfectly fine before to make way for highways, road expansions, and parking lots.
Those Brutalist structures generally replaced rubble.
Progress is unavoidable.
@@Ea-Nasir_Copper_Co recearch shows that modern and brutalist arcitecture brings depression to people living there
To be fair, you can't really complain about the changes they made because as far as buildings go, many were lost in the second world war anyway due to endless bombing and without all of those redesigns to accommodate for roads, it would've made both surviving and rebuilding after the war that much more difficult.
What an intense scene .. rattled every nerve in the house ...
“Don’t you enjoy a good fight?”
“No I don’t, not really.”
It gets lost among all the ensuing chaos from the ulcer, but this was a pretty clever cheeky little dig considering Neville Chamberlain’s role in refusing to confront Hitler’s conquest of Central/Eastern Europe.
This is the only time I was legitimately shook watching a tv show. Well done
I will say, this is the scene that scared me the most when I saw it. I was for sure he was going to die (I mean coughing up blood in the 1920s, wasn't sure what they could do) and knew something was coming up the past 2-3 episode and that scene still sticks with me.
never would have thought a blood-filled episode would be in a show like downton abbey yet here we are
The first time I saw this my jaw dropped, it was so graphic and accurate to a real ulcer rupture. Terrifying
This horrifying scene will go down in my list of shocks in tv history. In my opinion, it's up there with memorable shocks, like the likes of The Exorcist pea soup vomiting, Alien bursting out, etc. A proper high society dinner banter of mundane things. And out of nowhere comes vomiting blood like a 28 days raging zombie. Wow, thank you BBC/PBS for another memorable scene. I loved it.
And the fact this show is rated PG makes it more shocking. Granted, the content overall is appropriate for the rating, but the suddenness of the scene makes it more disturbing than a horror film that bears an R rating.
@@elijahvincent985Not really. The scene is simply unexpected, which gives it more of a dramatic effect, IMO.
After Dan Stevens left it was just a slow burn setup to this, one of the greatest moments in television history. NO ONE saw this coming! Maybe on GAME OF THRONES but not Downton Abbey. I tip my hat!
The most awesome moment of the series. I was totally surprised. The family members showed their true colors.

i remember falling asleep and waking up to this exact scene and i couldn’t stop thinking about it the next day 😭
I came back to this truly because I just remembered how shocking and utterly violent this scene was. I remember gasping and felling utmost horrified at the idea of having an ulcer....
If you're in need of a laugh, look up the life and times of Horace de Vere Cole, who was a real-life infamous prankster. Some of his stunts include:
- Strategically buying tickets for a play he didn't like, and then having bald men attend said play and sit in their designated seats. Their heads were each painted with a single letter, which spelled out "BOLLOCKS" and was visible from the balcony.
- Walking around London with a cow's udder hanging out of his fly... and shearing it off with a pair of scissors after causing enough mayhem.
- Throwing a party in which all the guests had "bottom" in their surname. He didn't tell them ahead of time; they just figured it out during the course of the evening.
I love his almost last words and her steadiness and optimism.
