There's a detail in True Detective Episode 5 when Rust Cohle is being interrogated that many of you may have missed. According to the creator, Nic Pizzolatto, Rust asks for a beer not just because he is a functioning alcoholic, but also because once he starts drinking, anything he says after that first sip is inadmissible in court since he is legally incompetent while under the influence. Rust went to the interrogation room solely to hear what new information they had on the case and he speaks extensively without giving any new information.

It's presented pretty clearly in the show and I think Rust even says it flat out to the detectives interviewing him, but either way it's a pretty cool twist. Just one of many examples of how great the writing is in this show.

Yeah, but unusually complex, deeply heavy stuff, especially such a rare gem like this, compels energy and time spent thinking, not to mention the necessary reflection/self- reflection that must go on vis-a-vis the subject matter for any intelligent and authentic person... So turning to well-done comedic content would, just for ONE reason, be of manifold 'therapeutic'/relational/practical/tonal' value for two people getting into each other's complicated, imperfect lives... It's a subtle detail of living, going forward, that either one or both of them consciously at the time or unconsciously seemed to have realized, and somehow tended towards eventually responding to...
It's actually fascinating, these details of life...

How a jury interprets statements made while intoxicated can vary, but being an alcoholic, I'd bet the prosecution wouldn't have a hard time showing that he wasn't intoxicated off a couple of beers, and anything he said would be just as truthful as if he hadn't had a lick of alcohol.
