These sets excelled when it was “faceless characters” where they don’t have a visible facial structure. Luke, Rey, Finn, and Obi-Wan just don’t look right. But Darth Vader, all of the troopers, Boba and Jango, and ESPECIALLY grievous look phenomenal.
I remember one time me and my friend as kids put luke skywalkers face in butter because we thought it looked weird and we started pissing ourselves laughing
General Ben Cossy! You are a bold one, praising the _Star Wars_ Buildable Figures! Though in all fairness, not all of these were completely bad. Arguably one of the best parts these introduced were the gearboxes for characters like Rey and Finn, as well as the half-torso pieces. It allows for both the classic _BIONICLE_ play feel, while also keeping the bodies proportional. Nick on Planet Ripple uses these gearboxes on his revamps of the 2015 Toa, and it's a clear step-up from the original gearbox backpacks.
I admit that i had a chance to get grievous once, but it was too expensive and couldn't get him😭... still, i manage to get one big lego haul of bionicle and hero factory, there were still not any pieces of grievous in it, but it still was a victory to me😊
I only bought the two Vader sets, Praetorian Guard, Scout Trooper and Speeder Bike, K-2SO and ofc Grievous, the honorary Bionicle of the line. Such fun CCBS sets
I agree, these sets sre amazing. I have grievous, vader and the scout trooper. I gave Grievous my Vezon cloak to make him look even cooler. Probably my favorite versions of these characters
When these sets first came out , my grandfather bought all of these figures for Christmas. I think the number 4 spot is the same for me 👍 speaking of the battle droid I pretty sure I found the guy that owns it
I love the scout trooper, I only got it this year (I had to piece out a LOT though) I love it, LOVE IT, its so fun (and yes, I do play with it, sometimes you just have to play with some dang toys) and I really, REALLY have to get more, mainly general grevius, grevious? oh wait I got it grievous, there we go. oh and I'm glad you didn't forget the super battle droid and AT-RT, I wish we got those so much. also, the range trooper helmet reminds me of the halo spartan EOD helmet.
I have the Grievous one and it's so damn cool. My only gripe is that he didn't come with a cape. I saw people put custom made capes on him and he looks SO much cooler with it.
The Scout Trooper and Speed Bike is an amazing set! And my personal favourite! I think if they’d have done more set like this rather than just figures, the sub-theme would’ve done a lot better. The worst of the buildables are those based on actual people rather than helmeted characters. Boba Fett, Clone/Storm Troopers (including scouts), Vader, Jango and Grevious all work great because the characters already look like toys (George’s evil plan all along). But the Luke Skywalker and the like with human faces? Terrible. What they should’ve done is done clone, storm troopers and droids. They look great like this. But they also should’ve done more figure and vehicle sets. Grevious and his wheel bike thing. Clone troopers and their speed bikes. Battle droids and STAPs. Etc etc. 01:38 Oh wow! Never saw the Maul set up close. That actually seems to be the exception to the human (or rather non-droid, non-helmet covered face rule). But imagine a clone wars version of Maul, with his massive mechanical legs!
I will say, although not on the level these ones the Obiwan is probably the best of the ones with human faces, the fact that they went with the Clone Wars style as apposed to the a live action depiction made the transition much more palatable.

The Top 5 video I've been dreading because it's Star Wars and I never got any of these guys because I knew if I did, I'd have to buy them all. It's a dumb rule, but being a collector means having collections, and I'd rather have no collection than an incomplete one. I did almost cave for that Darth Maul though, Maul is my favorite character, but I didn't want to have to buy everything on the aftermarket either (although looking at them all now, most haven't really appreciated, they're still quite reasonable compared to the retail price). That AT-RT would have also probably been expensive (I mean, Star Wars has been overpriced since 2014 because of Disney, you can't convince me there isn't a heavy licensing fee since the sets sell so well anyway), but that would have also been a very tempting offer because for once there was going to be a properly scaled AT-RT to its figure, and it could have had all the details LEGO would have wanted to recreate, too. Also Clone Wars! Clone Wars getting love after the fact is always appreciated, and this was right when it was announced to return for the Final Season, that set would have sold well. Ultimately, I can see why the Ultrabuilds stopped though. They reek of being too reliant on the current releases at the time and not having a good mix of old and new. Had there been a few more characters from the Original Trilogy and Prequels and even Clone Wars, I think that there could have been something there that then made everyone want to get the others they missed. Rogue One is a great movie, but its characters are not the most memorable. The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi had their hype, but if The Force Awakens didn't turn off a fan, a great many more were turned off by The Last Jedi, hurting sales even more. And the production of Solo was a mess, the movie was also not bad, but not spectacular either (LEGO may have been tipped off about Maul, or he was still popular enough with his return in Clone Wars and Rebels to warrant making a figure of him), and it was the death-nail for the subtheme. Compound the lack of interest in these new characters with the unappealing head sculpts and lack of variety in color with regular Star Wars System sets are criticized for, too, and it was never going to last past those 3 years. Had there been some more Clones, Droids, maybe some Clone Wars and Rebels specific characters where the stylization could translate better like with Obi-Wan, make some versions of Han, Luke, and Leia that were possible with disguises or costumes, like Hoth Luke, Boushh Leia, and maybe just regular Han even though he has a few different looks, just to give fans of all walks a figure they could appreciate, then the line could have lasted longer. Star Wars does have a bit of an identity problem because it's ultimately meant for the younger crowd, but there's still folks in their 60s that were there when it first started and want things to celebrate the parts of Star Wars they love, and you can't please everyone all the time, but also the newer stuff at the time was also meant to play on the things the older fans liked (or thought they would like), and kids just weren't as interested in that, or the characters did not capture them as much as was thought they would. Big RIP Ultrabuild Star Wars. Your sets may have been good, they were just too niche to make you last longer than 4 years.
Most people are sad about the B2 and At-RT never came out, wich I totally understand. But I am more sad that we never got a B1 Battledroid on a STAP. I pronably do the B2 dirty with that, but a B1 with a STAP would match far better with an 501st on a AT-RT.
I agree that range troopers are awesome and they remind me of polar bears, but the side of me with a passion for choreography and martial arts will not let me enjoy the scene with the Pretorian Guards. The guards themselves are awesome, but I feel that the characters were severely underutilized and crippled for plot convenience.
03:15 Note to self, listen to Ben when it comes to Lego mocs but not when it comes to picking out good movies let alone fight scenes, because if he's talking about the scene I'm thinking of then it's one of the worst fight scenes ever, unless these guys show up in more than that one fight and have another actually good one that I'm not aware of (luckily I've never watched the Disney Wars movies and only some clips making fun of them so idk).
Me personally, I blame the absolute GLUT of Force Awakens merch that Disney had swarm the world in 2015. Hasbro completely outshined these, and I think competition was too high. Released now they might click

These sets are really good when it comes to characters wo wears helmets, like troopers, cody, both Fett... But when it comes to a character with a visible face, like Luke or Jinn... (Even Maul) thats just goofy.
K 2 SO .Hated it . biggest pain in the bum to build . But in all fairness ,when I got it I had not done this type of build .Too many parts I had never used before . Now after having done more build and styles ,I think I could do it . The ultrabuild sets were great . Your pick's Mr. Ben are spot on . take care .later

Agreed, but Obi Wan's beard really helps out with the uncanniness. I have him and it looks a lot like the way he looks in clone wars
Generally a problem with Lego. They look amazing as robots of as creatures/aliens but not actual human faces.

As a Grevious fan, it's a near perfect translation. My one mod: two extra clip claws and give him his accurate feet.

The only problem with Maul and Jango Fett is their proportions according to actual characters and their actors. Figures are too tall.
