BACK WITH A BROKEN BIKE - REBUILDING A DRZ400 ENGINE

- The Suzuki DRZ 400 I've been enjoying broke. This video shows you how I fixed it. The cam chain tensioner broke, allowing the timing (synchronisation of the top and bottom ends of the engine) jump. This meant that pistons and valves smashed into one another.
I had to learn how to rebuild the top end of the engine. The most useful things that helped me do this were friends, a valve spring compressor, a Clymer manual and parts from eBay.
A very brief breakdown of how it went:
Remove engine from frame, remove top end of engine, rebuild top end of engine, replace top end of engine with new cam chain tensioner and gaskets, place engine back in bike, ride bike again.
As someone who considers adjusting the tappets a major operation, well done on the deep dive.
A deep dive indeed but not right to the bottom (end) thankfully. I need to get out there using it.
While it's better not to have a machine break at all, if it does, and when you can dig deep inside to fix it yourself, it gives you a stronger sense of self confidence and a better bond and more enjoyment with that machine. Amazing skills )and friends) to have in our world today of disposable culture and hiring out to do anything. Those trails look AMAZING!! Well done Fred!
Cheers. It was a good sense of achievement to fix it. We are really lucky in Wiltshire with the trails we have. It'll need a fresh back tyre soon but apart from that (and the very minor 1/10 hedge crash I did the other day, all is well.
Great video! For sure it’s going to help me change my drz head gasket that I just blew :(
cracking vid fred enjoyed this
Glad you enjoyed it. I'll try to get some.more videos out soon.
Been a little bit of time since this adventure. Hope you're doing alright Fred
Doing well. DRZ passed its MPT the other day. Been using it and really like it.
I took my dax 125 out yesterday for a shakedown run getting ready to sell it. I had so much fun on that ride that now I don't really want to. Life is hard
@@Khar_Toba you selling to replace with something new or just getting rid?
EpohDerf@@EpohDerf sensible me would keep the money. What I will actually do... I want a zrx1200...
