It's time for Shauno to put the engine in Sooty! After the old one died - the new one is now sitting on Shauno's shed floor and he's given himself 12 hours to fit it with a few mates at home - how does he go? You'll have to watch to find out!
That look on Shauno's face was priceless. You can't fake that pure dread of a spun bearing in a fresh engine.
Top tip: When installing a new radiator, tape cardboard over the radiator core to stop buggering up the fins as you have done on that nice new radiator, Shawn.
While that is a nice trick that I definetly want to keep in the back of my head, I don't think there's a problem with a couple of bent fins. Especially if it's caked full of mud a some point, ha.
1000% this. The cardboard trick has saved me so many radiators, its crazy awesome.
Probably don't fill it with water either
@@danielgraham602 water is good for the first 1000km or so on a new motor. The anti freeze is more likely to get past the fresh head gasket until its settled in
@@campbellherbert3958 oh bloody oath. Cheers for that mate. That's great piece of knowledge there.
I'm in the US (Northern California), and man hearing Sooty fire up made me even more jealous (than normal) that we don't the 1HD-FTE series of engines here in the US. That engine sounded so damn good (especially the turbo), I could listen to it on repeat all day lol. Man, that look on Shauno's face, I could feel the sheer panic through the screen. Lol gotta love you're buddies. Stoked to see this build moving this quick, this has been a super fun series to watch. Can't wait to see and hear Sooty when it hits its first mud bog after the rebuild.
You guys get the big cummins and duramax though are awesome. Plenty of us have started swapping them in for our old tired 1hd-fte, td42's etc.
@@SimonElenor that 1vd, engine is garbage. fix the ''oil canister'', 50,s tech.. 1k per injector, starter back under inlet. alt touching the floor. underpowered, expensive. yes, they go. but. hp is not what you want. i have a non computer, non glow plug, 4.2tdi. all mechanical. puts out 700nm. 230 hp.. small turbo.. td06. more torque than the twin turbo computer bigger v8 4.5tdi toyota crap..4.5 is too small to be a v8 diesel. wheres the cummins 5lt.??.. im in aus, & have to put up with these retards trying to lay wheelies, overtake me, show off..as they think my s/duty is a 7.3.. dickheads..toyota drivers idiots..they fit the 6.2/ 6.5td in nissans & toyota 4x4rs.. 38k. fitted. for a 1950,s buik shit box. & throw away a good 4.2tdi.. as i said,, idiots.. @@SimonElenor a 1kzte jeep would be sick. What gearbox you use?
@@SimonElenor do you have any pages showing your tacoma 1kd build? Interested to see how it goes
Would love to see a shed tour: Shauno's, Graham's and jocko's!! Wouldn't mind seeing Jocko's shed with a bit of an aesthetic clean up too ;) see what you use most, what you don't, what you wish you had and what you wished you could get rid off.
Shauno, I noticed you changed the slave cylinder on the 80, when I changed my slave cylinder I removed the factory steel piston from the old slave cylinder, removed the alloy piston from the new slave cylinder and fitted the factory steel one. The alloy pistons will wear to nearly 45 degrees then the pedal will just hit the floor without warning, and it usually happens at the back of nowhere. I've seen it happen twice, if you can swap a steel piston for an alloy piston probably a good idea to do it. The alloy piston get your best slingshot and shoot it as far as possible into the bush.
I'll echo the fact that you need to zip lock bag your bolts separately Shauno. Has worked so well for me now. I use to do the all in one bucket thing and yeah things didn't go well. Great build though! I love watching videos like this. Keep up the good work!
@@tom6549 Definatly mate. Bolts can be so similar in thread pitch and diameter but it’s the lengths that can matter
Glad sandwich bags with the white band so you can write on them properly are the best. Used to use Tupperware but that can take up a lot of space on the cupboards
it kinda goes for everything that involves little confusing bits and bobs
@@brody.w__3606 it just really surprised to see that the bolts weren’t separated properly for this build. Shauno is organised with his trips, 12v setup, canopy, spare parts list and food for trips etc but not with the little parts that hold the car together lol. Ah well, still love it
nah i'll beat yaz all... large flat piece of styrofoam, poke bolts into it and circle/ square around and label location/ part, full visibility for all and laid out in somewhat order
You do this line of work long enough you just know where it all goes. I bag and tag but dont really need to anymore
Had that same excited feeling when I was 15 years old and my old man and myself did a 1hdt swap in our 105 series. I don't know how similar the radiator support is on the 105 series compared to the 80 but I do recall that we didn't even need to remove that when we dropped the engine, gearbox and transfer all in as one piece. We didn't want to remove it because the aircon worked great and we didn't want to scew it up somehow, regas etc, and yeah, cardboard over the radiator to stop you from bending the fins, quite easy to do that because of how thin they are. Also dunno how the vinyl will go, ours still has the original vinyl and has shrunk over time.
Shauno, good job on the sound deadning and the vinyl covers. but you really need to considder adding in drainplugs to that floor. also considder adding marine or water resistant speakers for your audio system
Always brightens a shit day up when 4wd 24-7 is on
💯💯
💯💯💯
You said it Shauno. That look of yours was unedited "pure fear" alright. 😁👍 That "Sooty" laser engraving on the radiator top is a nice touch. ❤️ Sooty MkII is looking sweeet.👌
Yeah, the laser engraving on the radiator is cool. Shauno, is this (laser engraving) an extra cost service offered by PWR radiator?
It’s good to see shaunos gone with vinyl for the floor this time.
When you have Joel who needs enemies.
Good one folks.
Loving it so far
Dielectric grease all your electrical connections as you rebuild. Keeps all the dirt and water out preventing corrosion
Tbh I love the 4speed auto in the 80 series, just love how its geared as you just push the overdrive off and it feels just like dropping a gear in a manual!
Should take the old sooty’s chassis and the original dirty 30’s body and turn it into a comp truck
Ziplock bags are good but those cheap clear plastic segregated boxes are in every way better except price $9 each for my current go to 8 cell units compared to a couple of dollars for a box of bags.
The boxes are reusable, markable, stackable and they make it easier to see everything in them at a glance without having to search through them all.
Do you mean like the milwaukee organising trays
Just completed an engine swap in the zook solo, had to have the gearbox out for new bearings so thought I'd pop a slightly larger motor in. It's definitely handly when you can spread out all the bits in a car port to see what your working with when transferring bits onto the new block, zip lock bag trick is well worth it for all the bolts.
Mind you the hardest bit was lifting, lining up and then bolting the gearbox back in under the car on your own. Arms are still sore.
So far things seem to be all happy splash more torque and the gearbox is not making bearing noises.
Glad I didn't need to put the new engine in and out a couple times.
Thank you for being honest with the issues you had, I don't feel so bad about my stuff ups now :D
you and the boys are doing well on sooty 2.0. can't wait to see the new and improved on its maiden voyage.
Nothing but the best from Donnelly engineering Corey an his team know there stuff! wouldn’t go anywhere else for a rebuild💯👌🏻
I hope it wasn't them that place the engine mount in an inversed position
@@vespereus shauno said they (as in him and the boys) did it by mistake nothing to do with donnelly learn to listen.
@@AdmissionGaming learn and listen sounds like a 6 year old 🤣
That look on Shaunos face at the knocking... priceless
Classic 1hdt playing up like a 2nd hand whipper snipper! Great ep lads :D
Toyota's am I right 😆😆
Nah, the old 80 is alright ( just the 79s are about as useful as a blind guys glasses)
First car 67 Baja bug. Did the same thing because I found a better body. The swap was well documented for those though. You're a brave man🤠
Can't wait to see it on the tracks!
Labelled zip-lock bags are a must, or if practical I will put the bolts and screws a few good turns back into their threaded hole if a project isn't going to be assembled again straight away. Can keep the dirt and corrosion out and the correct number washers etc in order that way too.
awesome work Shauno.... agree on the vinyl, love having it in my 80 Series, just wipe it clean after a vacuum...
What a friend, xD, the knoking joke was a good one.
You could rename it to Sweaty with the amount of effort you've all put in.
Looks great can't wait to see it on the trails. Hopefully with Mighty Car Mods at one point.
A big block jimny v's sooty would be hilarious!
I have just started looking at your videos, love them and your jeeps , I am more of a Range Rover man my self with V8 gasoline engines . Keeps the video’s coming.
Sooty sounds awesome mate what a wicked rig good on ya
4x4's are totally different beasts, but god damn, working on mine, so glad for this advice ;)
One thing the ol' man taught me was to make sure:
If a bolt could be put back, do so.
If a bolt can't go back, bag n label per part.
Wires you; tape and write on it the:
Name each cable/wire and what line/part it ended/connected to.
That was learning passion over MK1 2r Escorts.
Haha! the old tapping the screw driver trick to scare the heck out of you on a engine rebuild start up, your face was a picture. Great work, look forward to seeing Sooty on the tracks
Just an idea as for bolt storage push em into a piece of cardboard and wright where and what it goes to as I've done the ziplock bags and they break down with grease and fuels on em 😅
I draw a picture on the cardboard and put the bolts where they are supposed to go.
That face was simply perfect!
I can only imagine the cost of all this, not just all the conversion from old to new but the engine alone would've been a big dollar item
there a bunch of scumbags

Yep. Labeled containers for nuts, bolts and small parts is what my dad (ex aircraft engineer) taught me to be organised and save time looking.
The 4wd gods put those hazard lights for a reason🤣
Ay Shauno - put a 12V bilge pump in the front and down the back……go on, easy to do and you know you’re gunna use it!! Perfect time to do it🙏🙏epic build💪awesome work to all🤘🤘
Love it , like every home mechanic nothing goes smoothly
Everything that can go wrong does
I'm a mechanic by trade and let me tell you it's not limited to home mechanics mate haha
Thanks for sharing the build Shauno 👍🏻👍🏻😎
"Like sicking a finger up a dogs back side.... he knows what I'm talking about" then the face you face hahahhahahaha omg legend 😂😂😂😂💯
zip lock bags, coloured zip ties, 100mph tape and a sharpy are your best friend on a build
Cant wait for sooty 2.0 and what adventures and videos to come
So far so good shauno soon sooty be on the tracks
Great to have her back Shawn. Back to life
Good choice on the vinyl, I’m
Just waiting out on my order to turn up 👌🏿
Man can wait to see this thing out on the tracks!!. Well done shauno!!.
IT IS ALIVE 😂😂 sooty lives 👍 the new rig will be a weapon on the tracks 💪💯
Awesome work shauno, can't wait to see you back out on the tracks. Try to keep new sooty dent free for the first run at least mate 👌
Excellent build.. I put some closed cell neoprene (wetsuit material) under my carpet on top of the dynamat- vinyl isn't an option here in USA- It cuts the noise and heat. Doesn't wick moisture either and is a resilient padding..
Radiator is beautiful!
Try looking for better aftermarket door and tailgate rubber seals. I'm sure with the amount of people doing deep water crossings in this country, someone bound to offer thicker and/or better sealing rubber seals for the 80 Series. Afterall, prevention (of water getting into the vehicle in the first place) is better than a cure (non-liquid retaining and easy drying interior).
Bloody awesome and it’s like a dog with a new bone I’ve never heard of a dog with a new tale 😂😂😂
can't wait to see big soot back out on the tracks she's looking mint 😍
Oi how long till sooty 2 is up I’m awaiting to watch sooty as there’s nothing else as entertaining as sooty I’m hoping that sooty be up and running soon
I have 4 manual vehicles and love them 👍🏻
We’ll done Shauno. Sound great and looks even better in the engine bay. Be safe David J4KIDS
If your mate dosnt mess on a fresh startup.
Is he even your mate ?
Outfuckingstanding
As you pull them off, put the nut/bolt back on....... After the part is removed of course.
Love this show! 2.4K views in just 15minutes LFG 👌🏽
Be interesting to see how that new clutch goes when 18g is fitted and tuned. Reckon it will slip
Can't wait for the finished product mate your kicking goals
Wow, that boost level is a lot lower than I would have expected. My cummins engines are running 30-40psi stock and get them up to 60-80psi with some work.
She's looking great Shauno!
i wouldnt consider manual to be "bush proof". i know they are stronger for the most part but too often i have seen or experienced manuals if not failing, the clutch letting go or failing from mud, burning out on hills or beaches and they are just more harsh on the rest of the drive train in general. i have found with an auto, im in far more control, im not snapping axles, cvs or killing diffs left right and center and not once has an auto box let me down off road.
of corse this will vary to the car. the sootys drive train is quite beefy and can take a hiding as are most of the big name 4wds. though i do see you guys smashing alot of hubs and axles XD
Your clutch is only going to shit the bed out bush if it’s fucked anyway,
A new clutch can still fail in mud, and if you don't know how to use one on hill climbs 😅
@@mmorgz6622 If ya floggin ya car in a bog hole you deserve the clutch to fail
You don't have to "flog" your car in mud to break it... 🤦. And some tracks don't have a way around them. But regardless, my point is the same. Clutch can die in mud.
you die with an auto, you obviuosly dont do decent 4x4ing. do you brake modulate.. if you know what that means. unless you have lock up on all gears. you die.. you have no control down hill.. a manual with decent gears, transfer, diffs, if why better. i have to drive down hill, or it stalls. 80 series have a good low range. mines better. std. yes, theres more control with auto. but down hill will kill you. too fast, no brakes. dead..
You have some ture good ppl with you Shauno ,well done brother great build.
Vinyl floors that was my idea. Cool beans.
Epic build series
Good job! 👍
And those are some clean emu wings
Good build boys shauno knows his stuff love to have mechanic knowledge like him .. good episode 5 day warranty 😂
That’s one fine comedy show 😆
spewing about the new hoodies haha, I literally got mine in the mail a week ago, and its the v1! haha, Great video boys, really enjoyable, I may be looking at an engine conversion in the next 12 months myself :D
Classic stitch up 😂 boys got you good, had me going too
It's coming on nicely Shauno with lots of in and out and some man made banging noises, so to make it safe it still needs those heavy duty condoms on the aerials.
When Shaunos building it seems like nothing will ever go to plan.
All about having a go and learning along the way
IKR? Lol
This applies to all things im a computer man the amount of times issues pop up new different from the last is crazy.
Has nothing to do with poor old Shauno- its TOTALLY the normal for any engine swaps. esp diesel to petrol a bigger change than most people realise.
Shauno you’re the best mate !
Just like 'ol Jocko said in the previous video, we learn a lot from these mistakes doing these conversions.
DER engine mounts that's why the alternator was to close to the power steering pump you should have got water cooled alternator it will probably shit itself on the tracks because of all the mud you will put it through epic build good to hear it run
Ha your face Shauno when you started it!!!
cant wait to see soot out on the tracks again! looking beautiful
Looking good cant wait to see it out on the tracks, you'd probably learn heaps by doing a full rebuild
Hahah I did the exact same thing when I put the freshly rebuilt 1hdt in my 80 I put the engine mounts on the wrong side of the engine
Very nice work on the engine swap! Sounds fantastic!
Loved every minute of that build !
I read about warnings of swapping diesel engines into petrol bodies. I can't believe you smiled all the way through it. To a point.
Wish I had the room to put the engine and box in as one, would have saved so much fiddling with bolts later on!
Hey Lads, @16:46 you came a little close to throwing yourself across the shed tighting the battery terminals up, that extra spanner loose in the palm had me worried haha.
It’s great when I can learn from other peoples mistakes
you should put plugs in the floor screw type with rubber bung to let water out fast can you get a Amarock in the mix i would love to see one goin to the bush
Safety ?? I was worried when I saw the engine crane extension at the 250KG mark. A Toyota Landcruiser 6 cylinder diesel with accessories, clutch assembly and gearbox would definitely weigh more than 250KGs.
Totally agree. You could see the boom bending sideways.
I’m truly only a little familiar with metric measurements. Always looking for a conversion. Sure they considered that, it was already on the crane. Oh well???
@@sigglin99 250kg = 550lb
Can’t wait to see sooty finished!! Looks so amazing so far….would love to know what’s under the car cover behind sooty…I’m going to guess a HX Monaro?
Someday I will!
Do this to my 1991 Chevy suburban!
just elated! well done mate!
The look on your face gold
Sooty 2 is looking 👌🏻
Looks good
Road to 1 million subscribers..... good job guys 🇰🇪🇰🇪✌️✌️
Go watch Eugene Banks diesel channel . He is possibly the highest rated diesel engineers on the planet. Definitely has the tech , testing facilities and engineers working for him , so look into his videos on modifying diesel fuel and air systems . It's destructive to the valves and combustion chamber having a turboed diesel that is pushing lots of soot . It indicates very high combustion chamber Temps, due to incomplete combustion . It's wierd how diesel burns with egts being destructivly high when high power meets incomplete combustion.
Good on ya fellas
Looking great mate 👍🏽 LET'S go sooty🔥😎🤙🏽
