Marie Antoinette was such a fashionista and trendsetter, she could get shoes that wouldn't exist for another 152 years and rock them in any gown.
I recently found out she actually tried to help the poor and single moms by creating a home for unwed mothers and overseeing the upbringing of needy children and she even paid for their education.
Interesting
And she was killed because of it too 😬😬
@@estefanymurillo22 She was not merely killed for having a killer shoe collection 😂
@@whitneyrose9293 of course not, played a hige role being frivolent while people were starving
i love the use of pastel colors in this movie
The director said she wanted to make a movie about Marie Antoinette (of course), but which stressed that she was a teen or ya during much of the time period she was harshly judged. She certainly succeeded with the “teen” feeling.
She was 19 at the very start of her reign... She was 19 at the start, nearly 36 at the end of her reign @@Itried20takennames
Champagne, desserts, shoes, jewelry, and wigs just to hang around at Versailles. The extravaganza, the decadence, the glamour!! could never get enough from this movie.
Converse high tops, a necessary part of every 18th century queen's wardrobe.
А потом ка-а-ак грянет революция!

Exactly
It was meant to convey to a modern audience how young she was.
The sweets look sooo good 😩 every time I watch this scene I just wanna go through the screen and grab one 😅 such an underrated movie.
Same, everything look so yummy 😋
Even the gambling chips looked yummy especially shown right between food shots
❤
I used to live an houq and a half from NY city. Pastries were pretty easy to get. Now i live in a hole in the wall town in NM and they have no idea what pastries are! I just love that part of the movie!
Those sweets and treats looked too good
Apparently, the director purposely slipped that pair of blue sneakers in @0:09. The music isn't appropriate for the time period either, but this was also done intentionally. They wanted to emphasize that Marie Antoinette was a teenage girl at this point.
Yes I believe its called pastiche-an parody in media
Yeah I’m sure those blue tight thingys she was wearing in that shot didn’t exist either back then
the director did this on purpose with the shoes
@@jemandjemand2362 That's what they just said.
Teenager?
Women in satc were doing the same type of stuff qnd they were hardworking women in their 40s
I can't believe people actually used to dress like this 24/7. I mean I know it was only aristocrats and royalty that donned these outfits and not the common folk but still, wow!
Even aristocrats didn't dress like this 24/7. They had a style of dress called 'undress' that was like the 18th c. version of laying around the house in your sweatshirt. It included garments like wrapping gowns, banyans, and sultanas. These were still a lot fancier than a modern sweatshirt, but they were more casual and relaxed than what you see in this clip.
Well actually most french aristocrats didn’t Marie Antoinette dressed in the style of a British aristocrat
They didn't.. In fact, it was a simple cotton dress worn by Marie Antoinette that helped solidify the aristocracies hatred of her. When Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun painted "La reine en gaulle" Marie Antoinette was scandalized by appearing in such a simple, immodest dress (it was comparable to being seen in her underwear). For the French nobility it was more evidence of how foreign, and rebellious, and licentious she was. This "cotton dress" eventually became popular throughout the continent, increasing demand for cotton, eventually leading to more slavery to the new world.
i mean they have like 3 maid getting her dressed 😂 so all she need to do was sit tight and let them do their job
I love they put the Converse in there.
Funfact: In reality Marie Antoinette disliked alcohol and didn't have a very extravagant diet. She liked chocolate and croissants however.
I often think this. The way they are depicted they would all be obese. She doesn't look fat in portraits. Though they could be inaccurate. She should be Henry VIII fat 😂
@@chrisbirch4150 Dancing and standing up at balls can be physically demanding. Moreover, well-fed people could eat less the rest of the time or just not actually eat very much of their lavish meals. For example, at the Bastille, the poorer prisoners ate the remains of the luxurious meals for the rich prisoners. In real life, princesses did not pig out like in this clip.
Which is doubtable @@chrisbirch4150
this was kinda included😂 you never saw her eat anything heavy, only some chocolate covered cake which was noted (she like to eat the pastry not heavy meals)

This movie is great! A cult classic, stylish, and a work of art by Sofia Coppola. I find it curious that there are so many sarcastic comments around here. I had heard that the film wasn't well-received in the United States, to be honest. Well, it received applause at Cannes, and as far as I know, it was very well-received here in Brazil. I particularly love this scene, Coppola's audacity to feature a Converse shoe there is fabulous (and the fact that all the candies were real).
this movie was genius. those who hated it just didn't get it.

So it seems like many people are confused why there are a pair of blue converses in one of th shots.
According from what I’ve heard years ago. Apparently the Director wanted to show some creative symbolism that despite all the gowns and riches, it’s to remind us that Marie Antoinette was a teenager during this time. So that’s why there was a shot of the blue Converse shoes there.
I’ve also heard of a theory that It is possible the film wants us to feel familiar with the modern aspects. Hence why in some moments, people act and talk like they are from more modern times.
To give us a glimpse of the familiarity that the people had back then with their own era.
Just thought you’d like to know you now have 74 likes. You posted an informative and thoughtful comment a few weeks ago and people have appreciated it, including myself, of course.
actually from an interview to Sofia Coppola:
IGN: Why did Roman include a pair of Converse tennis shoes in the "I Want Candy" sequence?
Coppola: Why was that? Yeah, he shot the whole "I Want Candy" montage and he just saw that there and put it in for me for fun. He just shot a bunch of stuff and left that in for fun because he thought I would like it, and then when I was editing we decided to leave it in.
The fans are out there looking for symbolism, meanwhile the author said she just did things for fun lol
@@VixxKong2 Oh. Well in that case, guess I was wrong. I have the memory of watching this movie about more than a decade ago, and came across various comments that highlighted what I said. It made sense to me, so I guess I believed in them.
@@VixxKong2 That specific moment of leaving a pair of converse in the shot may have been "for fun" but the whole movie was made like Tenshii_Artii said, it's very obvious if you watched the film. That's the reason the converse scene works and is "fun" and not weird and out of place.
I remember how much this movie was crapped on at the time, and now it's regarded as really creative.
It was crap!
Speak for yourself. It was and still is a terrible movie.
This was a very underrated movie, and I wish more people understood that this was NOT a historical documentary or biopic. This move was made for a MODERN audience to humanize a very misunderstood woman, who history has treated unfairly and inaccurately.
She was a scapegoat for a country that was long overdue for a revolution, but unfortunately, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The financial mismanagement and decadence from the French monarchy before her, wasn't hers to shoulder alone, and the decadence and luxury while the poor starved was not entirely her problem, either.
She came from the more laidback Austrian court, adapted to the high-maintenance French court, and never truly found her footing. The late HM Queen Elizabeth II was deemed to young to rule at 25, so Marie at 18 was in charge of France at the most vulnerable time in its history, an impossible task for any woman in any century.
May the last Queen of France rest in honored glory.
one of the best scene in cinematic history

@@Pdmc-vu5gj That's what I was thinking.. he/she must not have seen very many good movies.
@@patr70 Taste is subjective. But I agree that it's a very well made scene - the colours, music, characters is all an anachronistic mess that's delectable. Highlights the teenagehood of Marie Antoinette through a modern lens.
@@mankrikswifey Delectable? You think so? Maybe I am missing something.
@@patr70 Well, yeah. I thought all the shots of the desserts or copious amounts of sugar and silk and jewels that is completely out of touch with reality and the majority of France was the intention. It’s pretty and superficial, that’s the point.
how could people eat all the food and still fit into the beautiful clothes is beyond my understanding.
They walked, everywhere. No modern conveniences to get them from point A to point B. Plus, all the food was fresh, no preservatives, and nothing was artificial.
If you were rich enough to afford to eat like that, you were also rich enough to have beautiful new clothes tailored specifically to fit your body measurements.
Given at how proficient people back then were with a needle, I'd wager that even the poorer people wore generally better fitted clothes than we do today, as they would have been able to fit hand-me-downs to their bodies.
Today it is the other way around and one expects their body to fit some random clothes bought of a rack.
Corsets
The clothes were beautiful but wide. Marie Antoinette was not a beauty according to our standards, but the standards of her time. Look at some paintings, she had fat hands and a double chin. Her waist looks thin just because she wore baskets under her skirts to make her hips wider.
French paradox

Watching this scene while you’re stoned is fun but it’s also torture.
Even though the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles was in restoration - until spring 2007 - Sofia Coppola was allowed to film there a ball scene for the wedding of Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI.
I love how there is a pair of shoes at the start of the scene that have, historically speaking, nothing to do with that era. Lol😂

She also gave a lot to charity. At the same time, as the Queen of France, everyone from the nobility to the rabble expected her to be fashionable and stylish. There's no denying that she was extravagant, though. And her husband spent millions to help American Independence, which also did not help things.
0:10 didn´t know vans were already a thing in the 1800`s
I'm glad I'm not the only one who did a double take.
I bet they did that on purpose. 😂
Chuck Taylors...not vans...but the point is the same. Good eye. While these shoes were definitely not in existence at the time of Marie-Antoinette, their inclusion in the film was intentional, to portray Marie-Antoinette as a typical teenage girl despite the time she lived in. Also, Kirsten Dunst worse those shoes (for comfort) the entire filming of the movie because they never showed her feet.
Good thing Marie Antoinette wasn't alive in the 1800s, she died in 1793
one of things I think people miss when they see this movie just because its lost on us today, owning this many gowns and shoes was extremely opulent. Most people even someone of means only had a couple of outfits their whole life and would generally learn skills or have a maid mend them constantly. Fabric and getting brand-new gowns was super, super (I cannot stress this enough) expensive. Most people would rework, pin up or down, or make something new-ish out of something they already had. What Marie had was the highest level of luxury she was able to have any dress and not to mention sugary sweets. Also a fantastic luxury. Today all these things are far more affordable to the common person. Yet even today, getting a custom dress or outfit would be a decent amount of money for anyone.
I love this film
Why is there a pair of baby blue All-stars boots there!! 😂😂😂
I didn't notice until I saw your comment. At 0:09 they are just sitting there next to the chair. Haha.

An ideia by the director, great not?
some says that pair of Converse is a symbol of Marie’s youth: maybe she’s a wife of the Dauphin now and the Queen of France in the future, but we must see and understand that she’s just a girl, just an ordinary teen
@@tractorbeam2400 EXACTLY! some people think it was a terrible mistake but those sneakers are there to remind us that she was just a teenage girl 😅
The visuals are enticing and mouth-watering, just as a teenage girl would see this situation, beautifully captured by the cinematographer and director. Marie Antoinette was a child bride who thought that she was a kid in a candy store, but dead women can’t wear or eat pretty things. Hedonism and pleasure do not equate with happiness, definitely not in the long-term. Someone should have taught her these lessons, but the ones that tried to reign her in were not strong enough or too late. Good, underrated film though. Unfortunately, Cannes didn’t appear to appreciate it as others have come to in the recent past.

However, Marie Antoinette was told by her mother several times to read books and act like a queen, but her decision was to ignore the French people's suffering and live lavishly. By the time she decided to act like a queen, she was the wrong type of queen and boy did she go for it. Ignorance is never an excuse and our decisions determine the type of person we are.
