Ever since I started welding a couple years back I’ve always worn a 3m half face respirator with a 2097 filter… I’ve had plenty coworkers make fun of me for wearing it saying that tig welding doesn’t put off fumes. It’s truly sad that people deny the fact that welding fumes are awful for ya. I tig weld stainless steel, every time I change a filter it’s crazy to see how much dirtier the old filter is compared to the new ones!

Does the 2097 have good protection against organic vapors or is it just OV relief. I had a P100 with OV relief I would wear and I’d still get headaches after work welding galvanized and stainless a lot not to mention antispatter spray and what not. Just upgraded to an ellipse p100/organic vapors and gases. Can’t smell anything anymore and I go home headache free. I’m probably still fucked from the four years of improper respiratory protection. Long story short make sure you’re protected from vapors and gases too.
I found a Miller half face respirator at a welding supply store. Fits nicely under my hood. The 3M ones from Home Depot were too bulky to lower the hood while wearing them
Speeglas G5-01 vc Outstanding variable colour lens, clear visor for grinding, well balanced and adjustable air flow which is incredible on hot days. I can't believe so much Americans are still wearing fixed shade hoods without something to protect your lungs from dust and fumes. Especially if welding stick and flux in a fab shop, even if your are air arc gouging outside (within a large group) the fumes especially are bad. No company pays you enough to sacrifice your health. I’ve literally got arthritic discs in my neck from wearing a 3M speedglas. Things heavy. Gonna put in a request with my employer for a lighter optrel filtered setup or something.
3M makes a "quicklatch" version of that respirator and its so much better for talking and not fogging your glasses too, also ive recently purchased a 3M speedglass papr/hood and its so worth it.

If you planning to invest in PAPR check in Sundström SR574 and the fan unit SR 500. Then you CAM protect your lungs from what was mentioned here. You allso get a combined weldingshield and grinding protection in one unit.
Excellent practical presentation. I'm looking at options for a home shop I'm setting up in two bays of my garage. I'm leaning towards a central fan and making a portable "smoke eater" from a HEPA vacuum with a large suction side hose. I deconstructed an NSA certified welding smokeeater that my work bought for the shop a few years ago, and that's literally all it was: a fan with a filtration system and an 8" suction hose with hooks and a handle.
What really chaps me, is how safety equipment like fume extractors and helmets with respirator functions cost so very flipping much! The technology used to make them and the materials are cheap. It’s like no one who makes welders wants us to breathe safely unless we are LOADED. This is an outrage and needs to change ASAP. When will some company offer viable solutions for welding fumes at truly affordable prices??????

I have already learned to wear a mask from 3m at all times. It is quite comfortable and does not make breathing difficult a little tip: choose the 6500 or 7500 series where the outlet is at the bottom - this will prevent the windows from fogging up
Great stuff, very important. If you're a garage welder like myself, you might also consider installing an inline duct fan with a long flexible hose to move wherever your work is. I went with a Harbor Freight 8" inline fan in the rafters ducted outside. It more than handles whatever smoke I throw at it. Money in the bank. Also, don't forget your hearing protection when your grinding! I didn't until it was too late, and it's no bueno now.
I use the 3M quick latch respirator it’s a gel material and it allows you to flip it down if you need a quick drink or say something to somebody without having your respirator fill with crap and without having to take your hood/hard hat off

Yes, your correct, your health is more important, but we also have to consider the rise of capitalism and the introduction of fear these company's bring to blue collar workers. COVID was a prime example, if you can make someone feel unsafe unless they buy this and that in order to feel better about themselves, they most certainly will. As an engineer and structural steel contractor, if I've learned anything about college, its the brainwashing and intimidation large corporations bring on working families that sustain this country.

I come from coal mining and mineral extraction country. Watching people die from black lung, silicosis, strange cancers, neuromuscular failure, and other ungodly shit because they didn't have proper PPE was a fact of life growing up and working in the skilled trades. I don't want these young people to have to play Russian roulette with their health the way my cohort had to.
Americans please, there are welding masks with fresh air units like 3M Speedglass fx models. Please start to use them. Everybody in europe uses those types of units.
I remember my brother in laws shop back in the early 1970's. He had seven welders in there all burning no 8or no 10 rods on structural steel no fume extractors. The only good thing was the building was quite tall, but it still filled up with thick fumes by the end of the day and if you went up onto the mezzanine you got gassed pretty quickly.

That system looks heavy with a fan and batteries in the mask. I would recommend 3M Speedglas Welding Helmet G5-01 with Adflo Fan-assisted breathing protection
Nothing beats 3m's welding masks with adflo. Available with or without built-in helmet. It's also very comfortable to wear when it's hot, as the mask has a cooling effect. And a big plus is that you can flip up the front and have a large clear visor underneath when grinding.

I wear the 3m respirator anytime I’m welding for long periods of time. I weld stainless and it’s a common misconception that it’s clean but in reality it releases some of the most harmful fumes out of all the welding processes
Unrelated but noticed that big ole gate outside appears to be braced the wrong way. If the gate is hinged on the left then the diagonal should be going from top right to bottom left. Perhaps another weld project! Wohoo!
For a solution to the hot shop, a mitigation could be something like the older Land Rovers used, which was a second roof, standing off an inch or two so that air could flow between it and the actual cab roof, and the outer roof took the brunt of the radiant heat and kept the actual roof perpetually in the shade?
The 3m quick latch respirator is better then that standard 3m respirator he showed in this video, a lot quicker and easy to remove or just drop down if you need to talk to someone
I used that quick latch respirator for a couple of years and I can say it's probably the best respirator out there! The latch makes it easy to drop down real quick and the exhaust is facing the bottom so it never fogged up my hood.

The most insidious thing about these fumes is that the effects of them don't show up for decades. It's when you're finally trying to retire you end up realizing that all that complacency might have lead to something or another. But by then it's too late. Always got to be proactive with this stuff. I'll take a couple jabs over looking goofy over not being able to breathe properly later. People need to STFU about people wearing PPE and if you want to live dangerously, good for you. We're not in the 40's. We know the health effects. Get on it, wear it. This should be standard everywhere but so many of us are too dumb to get it.

The 7500 paired with 2297 filters is a mint setup.

Yeah, PAPR hoods range anywhere from $1400 to $2500. It's a good investment, especially if you're planning to make a long career out of welding.

I have the 3m 9100mp. Had it since 2014 works grate. It's also a great advantage when it's hot outside, as the mask provides comfortable cooling

I use a nose and mouth mask that has the tubes that goes to the middle of my back, filters at the end of the tubes. Works good

I use optrel Swiss air it is only a grand and you can use almost any hood

That PAPR looks big and heavy... Interesting design but if anyone is planning on getting a PAPR, I would recommend from Optrel or 3M

When wearing a 3M mask, you can wash your safety glasses with shaving cream. It keeps the glasses from fogging up.

3M. 6200/6300 series with any filter. For powder (toner for laser printers) I use base 603, filter 5911/5925/5935, holder 501.
Papr system helmets are fantastic just don’t buy this one unless you want constant neck ache
