It's interesting that in every translation of the game except English, Vivian is depicted as a transgender woman-- the Italian translation, in particular, even has her state that she's proud of her transition (I'm proud to have become a woman!) as mentioned. In the English version, all mentions and references to her being transgender are removed. Interesting.
Keep in mind, this was game was made in 2004. Back then; discussing LGBT subject material in media aimed towards children was seen as taboo at the time.(In America at least.)

Back here, since with the TTYD Remake. Vivian's apparently been changed from a Otokonoko (or Trap, I guess) to a Trans female - similar to the original Italian script. Some seem to say that the new EN translation is much closer to the JP script, and... I suppose the 'male or female' part is closer, but Vivian's actual sex is not. Unsurprising since in the US, it seems any kind of gender-ambuguity in design is labelled as trans.
I never knew about some these censors/changes to the greatest 6th console generation RPG game ever made. And I'm working on a "Abridged Series" of the 1st 3 Paper Mario games, so some of these may come in handy when I start mah Abridged Series of TTYD. ^^"

Tbh, I think context is needed for Mario's "salute" I mean I haven't played TTYD, but I'm "willing to bet" that when Mario does this specific pose (and I assume he does it multiple times as it's one of his talking animations.), it has nothing to do with him being a Nazi...
The "salute" is just a hand raise to indicate him talking. In Europe they changed it so he stands still and his mouth moves instead (which wasn t mentioned in the video). The hand raise was brought back in Super Paper Mario, but he doesn't raise his hand as high and his palm faces the screen with his fingers spread.
You know given some of the content in this game, not to mention the really mean-spirited digs at Vivian's gender, I'm... starting to understand why later games tightened the reigns on the series storytelling. It's just unfortunate they also made the gameplay lesser at the same time.
I don't think that's a totally fair explanation of Vivian's story. The mean spirited jabs were by characters that were supposed to be evil and Mario treated her really well and added her to his party. I can't speak on behalf of the dialogue in the japenese version, but if anything they tightened the reigns because Europe and the US would censor trans-representative content.

Doesn't really matter. The Buddhist symbol for harmony 卍 is the mirror opposite of the Nazi Swastika but most westerners don't know it and thunk they're the same thing. They removed it from Ichigo's bankai sword from Bleach in the international releases because of that.

No it's because of our regulations in Germany. Since both are PAL Region they made it the easy way and censored for the whole european market. To avoid problems in Germany. The Italian version is the only one that actually respected Vivian as transgender. She was continuously called a boy in other translations Even in Super Paper Mario her Japanese catch card calls her a boy. Putting it into the English version would likely have the same problem, and nowadays the game would be seen as transphobic.
There's no mouth movement in the Japanese version when Mario raises his hand like in the European version. I think I prefer the European one. It makes sense that Mario talks than just moving his hand around like a fool.
For the crime scene room being changed, I once heard soneone explain that, in Japan, the view of "no blood and violence in children's shows" doesn't exist. You can show that stuff as long as you also show them that it's bad. Not sure if it has anything to do with it, but it's just a theory.
1. Vivian's non-English descriptions are mostly hideously transphobic. I hope if there is a remake, they change all of them to stop referring to her as a male (except the insults from Beldam because that's part of her motivation to split from her sisters) and instead refer to her as a proud trans woman. Heck, do that with the English version too instead of censoring it completely. 2. There is a difference you missed; before the final battle you have the option to join the Shadow Queen. If you say yes in the English version, you get a Game Over after what looks like the Shadow Queen cursing you. However, Mario himself remains in his idle pose as the screen flashes. In the Japanese version, after the flash he hunches over and has dilated eyes like the Doopliss clone, more accurately illustrating that he has become possessed.

The game just released and unfortunately they changed the dialog (including the Japanese version) to make him transgender and fit modern western culture. I can't help but be sad to see everyone being turn into transgender. They did the same with Bridget from Guilty Gear who was also otokonoko.
I really prefer the Italian translation for their description of Vivan. Sure, it my not be totally accurate to the original translation, but the literal translation is actually just mean spirited towards transgender people. I think they changed the ears to bunny ears from Kitty ears cause not only it resembles the Playboy outfit, but the playboy outfit is copyrighted.
So Nintendo probably changed it to avoid a lawsuit.

Back here, since with the TTYD Remake. Vivian's apparently been changed from a Otokonoko (or Trap, I guess) to a Trans female - similar to the original Italian script.
Some seem to say that the new EN translation is much closer to the JP script, and... I suppose the 'male or female' part is closer, but Vivian's actual sex is not. Unsurprising since in the US, it seems any kind of gender-ambuguity in design is labelled as trans.
I never knew about some these censors/changes to the greatest 6th console generation RPG game ever made. And I'm working on a "Abridged Series" of the 1st 3 Paper Mario games, so some of these may come in handy when I start mah Abridged Series of TTYD. ^^"

Ha funny enough I always saw Rawk Hawk as a Hulk Hogan reference as a kid. Also was the specking animation where Mario puts up his hand changed in the US version becasue I remember seeing him do that hand think in my game as a kid many times.
The hand gesture is kept in the American version. It was only changed in Europe.

I mean I haven't played TTYD, but I'm "willing to bet" that when Mario does this specific pose (and I assume he does it multiple times as it's one of his talking animations.), it has nothing to do with him being a Nazi...
The "salute" is just a hand raise to indicate him talking. In Europe they changed it so he stands still and his mouth moves instead (which wasn t mentioned in the video).
The hand raise was brought back in Super Paper Mario, but he doesn't raise his hand as high and his palm faces the screen with his fingers spread.
I think that's a pretty safe assumption. 😂😂😂😂

You know given some of the content in this game, not to mention the really mean-spirited digs at Vivian's gender, I'm... starting to understand why later games tightened the reigns on the series storytelling. It's just unfortunate they also made the gameplay lesser at the same time.
I don't think that's a totally fair explanation of Vivian's story. The mean spirited jabs were by characters that were supposed to be evil and Mario treated her really well and added her to his party. I can't speak on behalf of the dialogue in the japenese version, but if anything they tightened the reigns because Europe and the US would censor trans-representative content.

No it's because of our regulations in Germany. Since both are PAL Region they made it the easy way and censored for the whole european market. To avoid problems in Germany. Most likely nothing would have happened here, since it doesn't really looks like a Nazi Salute, however most likely tjey wanted to be on the safe side.

What I don't get is why does the english version censor Vivian's story? There's nothing wrong with being trans, and I would think it would be a good thing for Vivian's story to stay the way it was meant to be. I guess it was just too ahead of its time...
The Italian version is the only one that actually respected Vivian as transgender. She was continuously called a boy in other translations Even in Super Paper Mario her Japanese catch card calls her a boy.
Putting it into the English version would likely have the same problem, and nowadays the game would be seen as transphobic.

I still find it surprising that Nintendo referenced Chuckola Cola from Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga in a Paper Mario game.
There's no mouth movement in the Japanese version when Mario raises his hand like in the European version. I think I prefer the European one. It makes sense that Mario talks than just moving his hand around like a fool.

The japanese rating standards are so weird, they censor M rated games like Calisto Protocol but allow raunchy things in games for children.
1. Vivian's non-English descriptions are mostly hideously transphobic. I hope if there is a remake, they change all of them to stop referring to her as a male (except the insults from Beldam because that's part of her motivation to split from her sisters) and instead refer to her as a proud trans woman. Heck, do that with the English version too instead of censoring it completely.
2. There is a difference you missed; before the final battle you have the option to join the Shadow Queen. If you say yes in the English version, you get a Game Over after what looks like the Shadow Queen cursing you. However, Mario himself remains in his idle pose as the screen flashes. In the Japanese version, after the flash he hunches over and has dilated eyes like the Doopliss clone, more accurately illustrating that he has become possessed.

The game just released and unfortunately they changed the dialog (including the Japanese version) to make him transgender and fit modern western culture. I can't help but be sad to see everyone being turn into transgender. They did the same with Bridget from Guilty Gear who was also otokonoko.
In the German version, Rawk Hawk is called "Aurelius".

I really prefer the Italian translation for their description of Vivan. Sure, it my not be totally accurate to the original translation, but the literal translation is actually just mean spirited towards transgender people. With that said it is neat that Vivan was the one of first ever trans characters in video games, and in a Nintendo game no less.
