Shooting a Short Film by Myself (Wes Anderson Inspired)

- Can I create a Wes Anderson inspired short film by myself in my apartment?
I have to start off by saying this has been one of the biggest challenges I've ever taken on solely by myself. It was a great experience to really try my hand at everything. Some departments really suffered because of it, but it was a blast to make.
If you watched the videos and are sitting here thinking to yourself "hey what about tracking and dolly shots? Wes has tons of those" I don't disagree. I've got some sketches done up for how I would do those types of shots by myself, but for right now I figured everything else was as ambitious as I'm capable of for now. Let me know down in the comments if there's another style you want me to try next.

@@GerstyG somehow I'm not seeing this notification til right now. Let me check it out
This truly shows the level of commitment and tenacity it takes to make moves, shorts, creative content! Great video Nathan!
If only I could like a video 1000000 times, this is so excellent!
Thanks! This was certainly a passion project. Glad you enjoyed it.
EXCELLENT! Stumbled on this...gonna check and see what you've done since. Hope your Spirit stays strong--as you move through the business. Looking forward.
This is so freaking awesomeeee! Thanks for sharing ✨😄🙌
I loved this video man!!! And thanks for Lut!
This is great, fun to see the end result and realize what you have taught us. Very inspiring, thanks.
NEEDED THIS!🔥
Your filmmaking is awesome. Wes Anderson's style really inspires me. Some day if I become a cinematographer, I'd probably want a ton of whip pans 😂
This was great seeing what goes into filming. Really great advice that we can get from this. Nice work!
Really enjoyed your video. It so wonderful for you to show how much work goes into filmmaking. It's so much harder than anyone can imagine. I make goofy little vlogs and it takes me so long for such little content. Thank you
This was absolutely brilliant
this was so fun to watch ahhhh
This is great!!!!
Really great! All of it! 👏🏼
Thanks so much.. I love your short film

Great walkthrough of your process. I'm always looking for ideas for short films where I'm the only one in it. This was a great sample of what you can do for just such an idea. Thank you.
Wow! Good job!

Thanks. This was a passion project for sure.

Thanks. Even a year later this is probably the most fun I've had making a video for this channel.
Amazing
It's a film....inside of another film....Beautiful 🥲🥲
OMG WHY IS THIS SO UNDERRATED!!!
Thank you!
This is so good!! At the end he ended up wearing something he actually feels comfortable its funny but its a huge lesson for life, if only everyone really wear felt like being who they actually feel like it would be a truthful world
Wow, juz lovin this 🤩 simple and splendid! Thanks bro, really learnt a lot!
This really shows how much you can achieve with creativity and patience (a lot :D) Thanks for the tips!
Glad you liked it. Thanks
Awesome!
I would've put in more effort in the thumbnail, but your short film is actually far better than I expected. Chapeau Monsieur!
Wow I loved it lol
This was so amazing. The shots and music were spot on. This has really inspired me. I have been avoiding making a film thinking i can't make it alone. But after watching this, I think I can. Thank you for making this
this was actually funny. great stuff. you can act too that is the bonus. keep it up you will go far.
thats so cool ^^
inspiring bro, inspiring..
Wow! That's super good! Was originally looking to do a short film myself, and your video popped up. Incredible how it turned out. Hopefully this will work for me to! Nice ending as well.

Great work man!!
Lovely!
Everything was perfect
Thank you. This was a passion project for sure
Did you know: beaver tails are the new easter eggs.
THE ENDING SHOT IS AWESOME I LOVE ESPECIALLY HOW IT LOOKS WHEN YOU OPEN THE CURTAINS. PLUS THE MUSIC IS CHEFS KISS. NICE WORK MAN
Thank you. Honestly out of all the videos I've made on this channel, this one will always be my favorite.
Dude you're really good, don't stop doing these videos ! Subscribed :)
I'd love to do more stuff like this. Thanks for the support.
Great job. Subbed!
Excellent.
GREAT video bro, had me laughing and learning all in one 😂👍 just got a new sub!
That ending tho 👌👌👌
For the whip landing, depending on what your landing on, you can also START on the end frame and whip away // reverse it in post. I've done it a lot on whipping to small objects for inserts.
cooooollll
👍🏻 Even if this funny post is (today) 3 years old, "Wes Anderson, the second" excites me. Compliment!! A good suggestion for future one-man film projects. Great.
That Lut you linked is a life saver, and saves me so much time colouring my student film, found your channel by chance, and people say fate doesn't exist? I beg to differ.
WoW
Bro you so talented!!!!! Nobody is making this kind of content!
Thanks. This was a passion project for sure
very noice ✨
Thank. This was a fun project for sure.
I love it
Thank you. This was so much fun to make
Pretty AWESOME
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it!
@@NathanCarterVids this video is just so much inspiring! You deserve way more subs but I'm sure you'll get those :D
having a tripod without a telescoping center is more stable and allows for more consistent pans as-well. Also with a fluid head can be very helpful. The more stable the camera support the less it will bump around
discovered this through reddit-- really cool!
Thank you!
Great video! If there is no movement in the shot for the whip pan you can start still on the shot and then whip out left (if the final shot is to while right) and then reverse the footage and it will stop perfectly still 😊
7:52 lol that was so fun haha
The lightstand focus trick works pretty well, the other option that I use a lot is to take the camera off the tripod, take it to the spot you'll be standing, focus on the tripod, and then put it back on the tripod.
That's a hot top right there. You could also judge your framing based on how tall the tripod is compared to yourself
A whip pan technique I used which produced pretty consistent results. Should work with any size camera rig. Instead of looking through your viewfinder or monitor, you look at the tip of the lens like a crosshair. First you find your start and end positions, then when you shoot. You line up the lens with something on the set.
Better breakdown:
1. Line up starting point with your monitor.
2. Look at the end of your lens, or something else that is at the tip of the top or front of the camera.
3. Make a mental note of something that lines up with that tip.
4. Go to end position and do the same thing.
5. Now when you do the actual whip pan, don't look at your monitor. Step back and get both points in view.
6. When you do your whip pan, just quickly line up the tip with the point.
This is more of an eye trick. When you're looking into a monitor, you're having to rely on the motion blur of colors to know when to stop, or a comfortable stance like Robert said(his name was Robert right? haha).
This method, you have no motion blur and you can get pretty accurate with a few practice whips.
I used it on a shoot last year and it worked great.
Ok, I stopped this video at 10:10 to say, Freaking Awesome!! Thanks for the LUT as well.. Ok, now for the much anticipated results. Cheers!! ( It was Awesome!)
Thank you I really appreciate that. This video is was a passion project for sure.
@@NathanCarterVids Well done. You, my friend have inspired me tremendously! I have every piece of film equipment and software I could want, but have been lacking the ambition or direction creatively. Thank you for the inspiration.. More please!👊😉 Congrats on the engagement as well! 👌
@@danjones3009 thanks man. Funnily enough the wedding is actually this weekend. Also feel free to share anything you end up making, would be happy to check it out.
@@NathanCarterVids 😉Best wishes to you both!! Enjoy!!🎉👫💍
I am new to all of this but
If/when I come up with something fun I'd love to share it with you. Thank you brother!
holy shit this was so helpful
Awesome, man. Entertaining and inspiring. Disappointed in the lack of beaver tail comments though!
Thank you!
holy fucking shit the final product was gas
I just subbed
Great video👍. Helped me make a Wes Anderson music video
Cool. Would love to check that out if you have a link.
@@NathanCarterVids sure! czcams.com/video/_AZOj-LQizY/video.html
cool
You doing a nice job
Thanks.
👉✨✨✨
It came out great bro! And it’s a good insight for me. I’ve been living in NY for 5 years and have no friends either. Extremely hard to come up with an ideia to do all by myself. Where are you based?
Beaver tails are delicious!
Awesome video by the way! You nailed it!
hey there! how did you do the slomotion so well? very nice vid btw ; )
I’m trying to film a short film by myself so we’re in the same boat 😂😂
Best of luck. Let me know how it goes.
solid work man, i was laughing so hard watching you shoot by yourself and forgetting all those steps, but you pull it off. And nobody can take that away from you. Question: what are those blazing lights you're using?
Thanks glad you got a kick out of it. So for this video I'm using an old Mole Richardson 2k zip light. A local news station was switching to LED lights so I showed up and stuffed as many of their old lights in my car as I could to save em from going to the dump. They get hot as heck but they still work perfectly fine.
Nathan Carter thanks for getting back! The way you acquire those lights is like winning the lottery? Awesome story!
Bro you have some good content. We make similar stuff. Especially this kind of video. We should talk video stuff sometime. Maybe do a collab or something. Keep it up man. I don’t use davinci I ton but I’m always making movies
All this planning to make a one minute short. Fuckin hell, now i have even more respect for directors, producers and all the crews working on a film-project.
It takes so many talented folks working together to pull it off eh
@@NathanCarterVids
Indeed. Im planning on making something simple in my own room later. The koncept is super easy to understand and imagine, just like this skit, but as weve just seen, preparation is probably gonna take a while xD
For sure. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out
6:00 try starting on the pic and film backwards to reverse the clip in post ;-)
Why did I think this video had millions of views...oh wait... that’s because it should!
Oh thank you. I really appreciate that.
Hate shooting alone i alwys knock stuff over
