      I think most people dont realize the fact that Ubel Cutting Magic and Frieren Gravity Magic are being compared to in this epiode.
      Ubel is not stupid, she's actually using a more pure magic than most mages in this era. Think of her like a prodigy of magic.

      On another note, I feel like Frieren is trying to make Fern believe she can beat her. Because if Fern goes into the fight believing she can’t beat Frieren, then that means she’s already lost the battle before it even started.
      Battles between mages is all about visualization. You gotta visualize yourself winning, otherwise you’ve already lost the battle before it even started.

    I see a lot of comments here (and on Reddit/Twitter) misunderstanding something about Ubel. The idea that she can just cut through "anything" if she's able to visualize doin so, but that's not what's actually happening. Ubel is special because she can compartmentalize the frame of "visualization" for her magic based on her past experiences, but it doesn't come without that specific base experience. Which is why she was able to cut through Sense's hair or Berg's cloak, she had the specific experiences where she was able to perfectly visualize hair being cut or a cloak being cut (the sounds, the feeling, etc) that she was able to bypass the logic that the hair/cloak was coated in defense magic and cut them just as the objects they are. So most mages look at Sense's hair or Berg's cloak and all they can think of is "Fuck, that thing's impenetrable" cuz that's how we all logically think (kinda like how we stop trying to jump off high places as kids after we learn we can't really fly); whereas Ubel sees their hair/cloak and just revert her mind into a more primal/instinctual state where she can go "hair is just hair, innit?"
    It's extremely handy mental trick to have as a mage...but she isn't able to apply the same logic to basic defense barriers (and many other objects), because magic barriers aren't something that's naturally associating with being cut. She never felt the tears or heard the slice of a magic barrier, like she did with cloth or hair. That's why Ubel herself stated that she can't defeat Wirbel or Denken, because of their simple magic defenses. Barriers without gimmicks that her cutting magic can't visualize around. Basically, if it's an object that Ubel naturally associates with being cut, then she can visualize it being cut, and then she can use her cutting magic on it.
    Ubel still has the potential to be a top 1st-class mage because of her copying ability, but the cutting magic she has reached its limit with Sense/Berg. Ubel was the ultra-rare SCISSORS to Sense/Berg's mega-rare PAPER in a game of magic Rock-Paper-Scissors. She doesn't stand a chance against the average first-class mage as long as they can put up a decent defense barrier and keep up with her speed, least of all Serie or Frieren, until she learns/copies a lot more powerful magic to use with her special mind.

    The most dangerous thing about Ubel is how she can break the rules of magic by seeing things in such simple ways. She just needs to visualise it to cut you..and she just needs to understand you to copy your technique. Her ceiling os high.

      it's not tho. sense even explained that anyone can imagine cutting cloth. but to actually visualise something that is impossible; stating that it's practically a super power. magic is a world of visualization; one that couldn't visualise, one couldn't do, in magic that is.

    • @nikolah.8472
      @nikolah.8472 Před 19 dny +5

      I think its the same power Frieren uses. Übel does it with intuition and cant 100% comprehend why, because of her weird mind. She has a fundamental understanding of boundaries of magic.
      Frieren showed a deeper understanding of magic and broke the boundaries and reached magic levels many mages never saw. I think magic is twisted and manipulated, because they allways describe the magic the mages use as someting they adapt from others(monsters, demons etc.) like the ability to fly. They dont understand the the principles or fundamental Laws of magic to the core, but enough to use it. Thats why they can all detect mana, because they disturb mana to a point its noticable.
      In this series Fern couldnt detect any Mana in this attack. That make me believe its so pure and Fern never witnessed this might. Frierens clone used gravity itself to crush her, she used the fundamental law of nature itself and didnt manipulated it. So Übel use it per accident, but Frieren can really understand it.

    • @beaniebusterbunso9631
      @beaniebusterbunso9631 Před 19 dny +1

      frieren couldn't just copy anything she wants by will like ubels does when she sympathises with you. just like flying which is described in the series on episode 3. it is only very recent that humans can use flight. which they study and analyse for years before they could use the magic enough to make it work; even though they don't understand how it works or the principles that makes it work. an example in this arc is frieren analysing the barrier. she didn't just simply break the barrier because she has a superpower. she analysed, studied it for days in able to break it; stating magic should not be limiting. ubel also mentions why she needs to sympathise with somebody before she could use their magic; mentioning that the person specializing in that magic is deeply related by the way they live. an example is wirbel, who even though, is forced to unalive even innocent children and women in times of war still doesn't want to commit unnecessary unaliv-ing. ubel can simply copy another ones magic just by sympathising with them. on the other hand, frieren studies, analyses and collects grimoires to use magic.

    • @WakingDreamer01
      @WakingDreamer01 Před 19 dny +2

      It was just an unlucky match-up that the other mages used cloth/fabric and hair as their "magic weapons". It's only becuase Ubel was fascinated with scissors and saw them cutting fabric and hair as a child, remembering the way they cut those materials vividly. If the first-class mage had decided to make and wear "immovable plate armour" with exactly the same defensive magics as his cloak...Ubel's spell wouldn't have done anything - and he'd still be alive.

    • @mookiestewart3776
      @mookiestewart3776 Před 19 dny

      They still haven’t explained it in the manga . Lots of people think it’s similar to demon style magic which is called “curses” in the manga but several powerful demons have said they are attempting to find the “height of magic” which is exactly what fern called that technique. My theory is that it’s almost like “magic of the goddess” that created this world. And that Frieren basically taps into the mana of the world itself and the acts why it’s undetectable because it’s always around you at all times anyway. Also there are a couple hints that it may have been the spell Frieren used to kill that demon general when flamme found her if you go back and watch that scene . Meaning Frieren may have possibly known this magic even before she was officially trained. Very interesting indeed lol

    • @arghanothername
      @arghanothername Před 17 dny

      Another theory (or possibly variant of the theory) is that it’s U el’s visualization trick taken to an absolute extreme: Frieren visualizes a reality so perfectly that it becomes real without a spell.
      Not sure what I think is most likely.

    The replicas did not have minds but their actions were as if they did have minds. Presumably, that ability to replicate came from the Spiegel itself, which read everyone's minds in order to create the duplicates. Though, given how Frieren has mind control resistance, its interesting how that happened with her. I guess resisting mind control is not the same as resisting mind-reading, though I'd imagine Frieren can do that too.

      Yep! She's a killer (and maybe even enjoys it), but she's not a murderer and she isn't evil. Outside of the proctor, she only kills in self-defense (albeit with zero hesitation). Regarding the proctor, I would guess it was either because she underestimated how "easy" the cloak would cut (i.e. she applied to much "pressure") or it was because of "how" she visualizes cutting (i.e. does she picture a knife? Scissors? A pizza cutter?).

      @@onetom2222 Agreed. Ubel wants to be a first class mage. She doesn't *care* that she killed the proctor and was maybe reckless because of that, but it wasn't intentional. My guess would be related to how "difficult" it was to cut his cloak - it might've taken less "energy"/"pressure" to cut than she expected. She knew of his cloak's defensive reputation after all, so that might've influenced how intensely she made the cut.
      The theory about Ubel learning to control her cuts better _because_ /after she killed someone also makes a lot of sense too, tbh. Hadn't heard that one yet.

      I mean Frieren has literally beat the demon king. Also, it is implied that Fern will surpass Frieren....for a time

      I don't see how this is an L for Fern. The entire test's point is about using teamwork and cooperation, and she's the only test-taker who could've landed those hits at all. It's also implied that clone Frieren started taking her as seriously as the Demon King with the "haven't used that move in 80 years" line. Fern's only 18 and only started adventuring/fighting ~3-4 years ago. In fact, I think this "L" was a good thing for her - Fern would not have gotten to see that "can't sense any mana" move Frieren used otherwise. Fern knows that the "height of magic" is higher than she realized now.

      @@ArtificialXDyes she took fern that seriously but it took a combined attack from Frieren and fern at the same time to push her that far . Had fern fought Frieren by herself she would have been destroyed without landing a single hit. But you’re right it’s not a fern L she’s just young and not in Frierens league yet and really there are only like 4 mages in the world that are on that level currently

      @@ArtificialXD Setup: Fern thinks she can take out the clone, Frieren also says that Fern can do it.
      How it actually goes down: Fern actually can't notice the opening it was pointed out in the planing that she could notice, she gets completely crushed, Frieren has to do it herself, and it turns into, not one, but two of the umpteenth Frieren is so awesome moments. In other words, the complete opposite of the setup.

      @@onetom2222 Yes, Frieren is very powerful, that doesn't really have anything to do with the point I was trying to make though.
      I just thought it was an extremely cool idea if Frieren isn't some unbeatable Mary Sue, and if Fern was actually good enough to exploit a weakness of a god-tier mage she's observed for most of her life. And they set it up like that only for Fern to be completely outclassed, unable to even notice the opening she had brought up, and it only turns out Frieren isn't as powerful as herself plus another strong mage, what a shocker.
      They set up something narratively interesting, only to pull a twist, and make it the most boring, pablum, and predictable outcome instead. I found it to be pretty disappointing, and I just hope it's a set up for a double twist of Fern completely outclassing Frieren later on. That's all I was trying to say.
