- "Yeah, it was premeditated," Bobby Martinez reveals of the New York incident that expedited his World Tour departure.
"For a couple of years, I was debating on calling it quits. So I was talking to Kelly and I was talking to Sunny when I went to New York, and before my first heat, I was like, 'If I win this, I'm gonna let them have it.' They were like, 'You're a fool, don't do that shit,' [laughs]. And I was like, 'Nah, fuck that.' You know what I mean? I was just done."
It's been nearly 10 years since Bobby's famous Tennis Tour speech. Despite his absence from the competitive scene, Bobby's surfing hasn't lost an inch, and he remains one of our sport's most widely cherished figures.
In this First & Last ep, we visit Bobby at his home, where he shares stories old and new. We also get introduced to his new surfboard model, which has been in the works with Channel Islands for over four years (spoiler: despite having access to CI extensive catalog, he only rides one surfboard-the "Bobby Quad").

Bobby is a good guy. I came to Cali about 2.5 years after being landlocked in Texas for school. On my way back to Maui, I stopped in Cali for a couple of months. My first surf session was at a point break in Ventura. I was fat, and pale after not seeing surf for so long, so I was getting snakes left and right.
I was about to give up and paddle in, when someone behind me said "dude, aren't you cold in that thing?" (I was overweight, and the only wetsuit rental that fit me was a spring suit, and it was December)
I turn around, and say, "aren't you Bobby Martinez?"
He laughed, and said "were you from, I never saw you here before".
I told him, and we had a conversation about the last time he surfed Hawaii. Then he asked what I thought of the surf break, and I told him I didnt have an opinion, because I never had a wave to myself with all the snakes in the water.
He told me to paddle to the peak with him, so I did. A really nice set came in, and he said, just paddle behind me. We both took off, he called everyone off the wave, then said "enjoy" and kicked out. I must have done 15+ turns on that wave. It was so good, that after the long frustrating session, I was exhausted, and went in. Sat in the parking lot for a while, drying off and having a toke. He stayed out quite a while longer. Never had a chance to thank him. That was way back in 2001, lol
