Chat/Comment Guidelines:
1: Respect each other, do not intentionally cause arguments and diffuse the situation immediately.
2: Please no backseat gaming. If I need help, I will ask the chat for help. A lot of the fun for myself and the viewers is coming up with the strategies on my own and solving problems in my own unique way.
3: Listen to the streamer. If I say stop, I mean stop, and move the discussion on.
4: Please don't reference other creators' in-jokes and running gags on my stream. Just as much as I wouldn't like another creator using my lore, I would find it disrespectful to use other creators' lore.
5: Moderators' and streamer's decisions are final.
The Rules:
1: The timer starts when walking away from Professor Elm after receiving the starter Pokémon.
2: Only the Challenge Pokémon may participate in battle.
3: No items in battle, except Balls from the bag.
4: No evasion-increasing TMs, and no Rest and Sleep Talk TMs until every other option has been exhausted.
5: No intentional uses of glitches or exploits, except the Teleport glitch after the SS Aqua.
6: No Rare Candies until facing Red. Rare Candies will be used in a 3-3-4 pattern.
7: Timer may be paused for breaks in recording, but no inputs may be made when the timer is paused.
8: Save states are permitted in the overworld, but no save states may be used mid-battle.
9: If the challenge Pokémon faints, the previous save state must be reloaded and progress regained.

I feel like he's gonna be SCARY good.
I love Gengar, and even with its STAB moves being physical, it actually has a lot of other moves to use to utilize its massive Special Attack. It's a shame you need friends to get it, and we do not talk about the NPC trade in Sinnoh who offers a Haunter with an Everstone
Nobody should talk about M*ndy! She's the actual worst!
@@Squidgy Lance is taking notes from her
I have a soft spot for this chunky Ghost Boi... So I'm glad that he's going to return for Scarlet and Violet.
I never knew that Gengar could learn the Elemental Punches in Gen 2... It seems so weird since ghosts are supposed to be incorporeal, but Boo! is so powerful that he can do it anyway! :)
Thank you for putting Gengar in the spotlight and utilizing such a quiet unique moveset!
EXCELLENT "CURSE-HYPNOSIS-DREAM EATER" COMBO ON THAT SNORLAX!
What a perfect video considering Halloween is right around the corner! As always, love the content, my friend. Another fantastic run.
I bet Gengar can't believe he's not top 3 :D Gen 1 has spoiled him.
Great video!!
Missed the premier but it’s okay! We’re back!
Great run Squidgy, i had a feeling Gengar would have a tough time at the start with the normal types but it still did great in this run.
Sounds like you're in good Spirits! I'm not sure Witch series I prefer, this one or the main series, but I always know there's an upload just a couple days away, you've never Ghosted us before!
You're quickly become one of my favorite Pokemon youtubers. That's it, that's the comment.
Curse + Leftovers + Hypnosis + Dream Eater = Cheesy vs Snorlax.
Story time:
Janine is doing her best! She’s the prodigy and heir of her father’s gym. She’s trained hard but hasn’t yet caught up to her fellow gym leaders. She’s assembled the best team she can given these circumstances.. She has the least seniority so she’s been expecting newer challengers in Kanto, but alas she was never ready for the newly established champion of Johto!
It makes sense Gengar can headbutt butt, It still seems so weird to me 😂
I think you could had probably saved a lot of time at falkner if you went in with one hypnosis left. Most likely avoid all acc drop from the pidgey and even get a hit on pidgeotto before the first acc drop.
Faulkner's Pokemon not only are immuned to ghost type moves, they are double immuned to ghost type moves, not that it makes a difference since you only need one type to be immuned to a type, you can't take half of 0 in damage lol.
Any decent starting move would have helped so much. Poor Gengar.
My favorite Pokemon 💜
The community should name the hm's friend
Comment below with the names!
(No need to name them in-game only call them the names people like the most!)
Gengmar!🎉
Great vid as always Squidgy! Have a great rest of your day, and try to eat your own fill like Gengar 🤣
I've woke up feeling starving! I think Gengar ate some of my dreams, you know!
@@Squidgy Well he did have an extremely rough start so it's to be expected
Love the presentation of these videos, very entertaining!
Strange moveset for most of the game: Hypnosis and Shadow Ball are unnecessary when you get access to Fire Punch, Thunder punch and Ice Punch. You would have found this much easier if you just used Hidden Power and the three punches, you'd have super effective coverage against every type except Normal, Dark, Poison, Electric, Fire and Fighting, most of which have a secondary type you can hit super effectively. The only real Pokémon you'd struggle with is Red's Snorlax in which case you can use your Curse strategy (or maybe Dynamic Punch). You'd probably still struggle with Karen's Houndoom too but you struggled even harder with that moveset.
When doing the videos, I always have to balance an interesting learnset with the most efficient moves I could use - I won't get a chance to showcase STAB Shadow Ball with many other Pokémon, and the punching moves are a very common feature in the runs.
So, because this is a side-series, I chose to use a learnset that was a little bit different to what would have been expected. You're absolutely right that the pucnhing moves would've been quicker, but they would have undoubtedly been less interesting to watch!
Fair enough! Love the videos man, good to see a fellow Brit on the Pokémon scene :)
I'll never understand why shadow ball pre gen 4 drops sp Def when it hits physical defence
Why didn't you buy multiple fire and ice punch tms to switch them out for important battles
Just a thought: couldn't you have just bought a bunch of Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, and Hidden Power TMs to change Gengar's moveset before each major battle?
Agreed, fire punch would've saved a fair bit of time against Koga and thunder punch would've made Blue way easier as examples. Even if he didn't want to keep swapping them out, hp dark just kind of sat there unused for a while as it has essentially the same coverage as shadow ball.
I've only just had chance to look back at the raw footage - money was VERY tight in the run, and I wasn't sure whether to go the Thunderbolt route after the league.
It'll get a redo, though, at some point in the new year, and I'll be using the punches a little bit more often!
This was a fun stream, until Snorlax lol, I'm glad you finally got through him lol
It was fun until Snorlax! I wasn't happy with the streamed run, though, so I did another quick playthrough to get a more acceptable time!
Gengar is really good once you get out of that hole in the first few levels. I'm also glad that someone decided to use Dream Eater since it's the most underutilized move in the early gen games.
Dream Eater is definitely underrated - especially against Snorlax. If you can get it to use Rest and you have decent Special Attack, it's ostensibly a free heal!
@@Squidgy yeah, a heal that does damage!
Random thought. I always thought the trees in Koga's room looked like broccoli.
Now that you mention it, I can't unsee it!
Ghosts are my favorite type. It's always a bummer to me how few there are in gen 1&2. Cubone and Marowak could have been part ghost type, with the whole skull and bones thing.
At least they gave Marowak a Ghost-type form in Gen VII. It would've been nice to have a Ghost/Ground type all the way back in Gen I, though.
I believe that Ghost is the second-rarest type (tied with Fairy) nowadays, so there's still a lot of work for Game Freak to do, but the Ghost types they're creating in more recent games seem to be well-received and are some of the best Pokémon of later generations!
Lets gooo
Think if you used more elemental punches instead of shadow ball in the first half, would have been a lot faster. Ghost moves rely on Attack instead of Special Attack in Gen 1, and Attack isn’t Gengar’s forte
It's a tough balance between getting the absolute fastest time, and showcasing a Pokémon's unique potential - because Gengar's one of only two fully-evolved Ghost-types in Gen 2, I wanted to show off STAB Shadow Ball for at least a little while.
I did point out in the video that we were using Physical Attack instead of Special :)
Sadly for Bruno casting fist doesn't really hurt ghosts..... Good try though!
do one as jynx and watch as you sweep most of the game
Question about hidden power. Does it use your attack stat as a normal move? Or does it use the stat that corresponds with it's hidden type (special since it's dark type)?
Gens 1-3: Uses the same split as the type (so dark would be special, fighting physical).
Gens 4-7: Always special regardless of the type
Gen 8: Unusable in Sword and Shield, always deals super effective damage in Brilliant Diamond / Shining Peal
@@DanBottiglieri good to know. I just realized I never thought about that lol
I believe that Hidden Power works as it did in Gens 4-7 in BDSP, but always deals super-effective damage in Legends Arceus
I would say new number one, elemental punches are broken, and with its huge special attack it will destroy most opponents, later you get shadow ball, while physical, can deal with threats like reds espeon, and the typing makes snorlax a joke.
Falkner is going to be a pain though, as you dont really have anything to hit his birds with, while they hit your poison type with mud slap.
So, its a tricky one.
Youngster Mikey, Falkner, and Slowpoke Well will all require struggle, so we're not gonna have the best of times in the beginning!
@@Squidgy It will be interesting for sure, slow game up until goldenrod, but then i expect it to rip everything to shreds until you meet Karen.
As for Karen, hypnosis might be needed for umbreon, you really can't afford sand attacks when you meet houndoom.
That paras didn't deserve that ngl but after your next just the battles would love to see how alakazam stacks up considering it's better in gen 1 but then they added dark types.
Alakazam is the next Pokémon lined up for Just the Battles!
@@Squidgy so was that a before or after I said it 🤣
You need to Do Alakazam, even as a kid I was able to sweep everything.
Also Dynamicpunch do not underrate it on Gengar vs Umbreon
Alakazam is planned for some point in the near future in Just the Battles, so you won't have too long to wait
I would like to see some HGSS runs Whitney's stupid Milktank has Scrappy
what does physical vs special ghost type moves even mean? i watch the videos for nostalgic reasons and i find it interesting but i dont personally play so im a little confused at times unless detailed in depth. im intrigued by the actual stats and statistics as well as the variances between generations such as gen 1 making special atk and def equal to the greater of the two numbers. details like those are extremely interesting to learn
Physical and special split became a thing in gen 4 where shadow ball was always physical because ghost was a physical type.
@@DeadLeeShooter so all ghost moves are now physical or only some?
In the first three generations - Red/Blue/Yellow through to Pokémon Emerald, the move's typing determined whether it would be a Physical Attack or a Special Attack and use the corresponding Attack stat.
Ghost was designated as a Physical Attack, so Shadow Ball uses Gengar's Physical Attack stat instead of its Special Attack stat.
From Diamond and Pearl onwards, moves of any type can be a Physical Attack or a Special Attack, so Shadow Ball in later games is a Special Attack and would utilise Gengar's higher Special Attack stat.
I hope that helps! :)
@@mrman3724 before gen 4 they were all physical gen 4 and on they are special and physical. Like shadow ball because it’s a ball being shot out is special but shadow punch is physical it’s helped a lot of Pokémon and hurt some of them.
@@DeadLeeShooter so from gen 4 on, a move like thunderpunch is based off of the normal stat rather than special stat? its still effective against water as its an electric move but now you cant just have a massive special atk and utilize those moves effectively, you must also have a high normal atk?
I cant manage to put Charizard to sleep hence I never beat Red with Genger (I'm at level 74)
