At first I just thought this was another solid Deth album, but after a few listens I think this is easily their best since Endgame and probably the second best album of their "return to thrash" era that started with The System Has Failed. Nothing is going to top Rust In Peace and Peace Sells, but as long as you don't expect that there's a ton to love here that gets better with repeat listens.

@@megachrist I don't rank it above Endgame, but I'm currently giving a relisten to all of Deth's post TSHF albums and right now I'm liking it better than anything else from this period. I dig TSHF for being a kind of middle-ground between Deth's more 90s hard/alt-rock influenced styles and their thrash origins, and it does have some of their catchiest songs; but I'm still very partial to thrashy Deth and TSTDATD is so much faster and more aggressive than TSHF and, especially on repeat listens, I think it has enough hooks to where I'm not finding TSHF is vastly superior on that front. At least currently I'd rank return-to-thrash Deth like this: Endgame > TSTDATD > TSHF > Dys > UA >>> 13 >>>>> SC

I am also a musician that has been playing since the mid '80's. That said, frankly I am surprised that the album is as solid and energetic as it is. Is it the best Deth album? No, it's not. But it is solid, and I really enjoyed quite a bit of it in the first listen. It is incredibly hard to stay real, relevant and popular for decades. Dave has been able to do just that.

Similar situation; been listening to Megadeth since the demos…
I like the fact that he was able to combine so many elements of their past and present of the band into this record from what I’ve heard so far. I don’t think people realize how difficult it is to keep your sound relevant when it’s distinct without just literally copying yourself. Very few bands can do that…

    • @BazonBlades
      @BazonBlades Před 2 lety +2

@@ObsidianLife, That's exactly it. Musicians only have so much inside that can come out. We spend our entire lives rewriting and replaying the same 100 songs over and over in different ways. Some musicians transcend that. But most do it to varying degrees.
Most music "fans" don't understand that. That's why they complain that songs sound similar. There's only so many options available on a 24 fret guitar.

Megadeth grows on me slowly, so I was quite disappointed on my first listen, the starting riff in The sick, the dying... and the dead was cool, but after that it wasn't quite what I wanted up until Junkie (pretty solid, musicaly fun song). Then Soldier on with this super infectious chorus and Celebutante caught me and when Mission to Mars hit I was like: holy shit! This one might be my favourite for now. Its definitely an album that fits with 85-92, 2004-09. Its these two eras wrapped in an album. If Dave's voice didn't age, it would sound like classic Megadeth.
It has angst. And although each line up is good and capable, this is the best one since the 90's.

A week now with this album.
I am a fan since the first one. I was there back then.
This album is absolutely brilliant. One of the most solid Megadeth albums ever.
I loved Dystopia but, it’s nothing compares to this one.
The best song is Mission to Mars for me. It’s light, super catchy and funny. Something rare for Mustaine.
    I love as well Célébutante.
There is no filler there. Everything is enjoyable, everything has its place.
And for those that are complaining about the songs order, there is something called a playlist. You can put the album in the order that you want. Isn’t magical or what?

I like the album! It reminds me of Countdown to Extinction. I don't mind bands evolving and changing but I have to say they seem to be pulling from older ideas and becoming more commercially viable. I love the title song! I think I played it over and over. Rust In Peace is my second favorite. Peace Sells is my favorite. I grew up listening to it.

I'm a 40+ year Mega-fan till death of this band..
and at first I didnt expect anything new and exciting just another MegaDave album.
    Boy was I right!!
Except for the fact that MegaDave delivered everything i expected and more!!
Dave and the boys laid down some of the most memorable Metal tracks I've heard since the early days when Marty Friedstrings was shredding on lead axe.
This album is amongst my personal favorite "MegaBlessed" albums.
Its flat out hands down a classic "Speed Thrash" album.
    (a new genre?)
    I just coined.
And btw Dave..you need to get Dave Ellefson back in the madness he "is" the DNA in Megadeth!!
    C'mon Dave aloha from Hawaii!!

Is on my top 3 from the band. Is killer and loved the fact that Dave put out a true heavy record and did not care about media or any other bs that causes bands to record stuff we dont really want to hear. Dave is the boss and this record solidifies his dominance in this genre of music

Definitely a great album with amazing musicianship. Could Dave be the best guitarist? but the cover tracks and Mission to Mars didn't belong on this album - they should of been on a separate B side type album released later on. I think Dystopia was better but I also think Dave was having some fun on this album too so its all good.

Very cool album. Like on many Megadeth albums in the last 15-20 years there are a few killer tracks that stand out.
My favorites are Soldier on, Celebutante and Mission to Mars which has a cool mainstream metal feel to it and an epic chorus.
Btw, on the Spotify release there is a cover of a Sammy Hagar song (This planet‘s on fire) with Sammy appearing in the chorus, obviously even more mainstream but I have to say I absolutely love that one too

Long time fan, like every album ever done by all bands, has its great songs and mediocre songs, not every song can be a hit. But it’s the ear of the listener that decides. Of course it’s hyped, and should be, it’s great to have new content and some great riffs. They sound tight together as a band.

i like the balance between Speed, Thrash, and straight up Rock n' Roll on that album. Although i feel the production gets old real fast after getting so stoked about Dystopia. Josh Wilbur could've at least mixed the drums a bit differently from the previous album.
But then again those drum flairs that Dirk added especially those little blasty blasts on some songs are very welcome, given that Dave teased on that one.

    • @MetalPilgrim
      @MetalPilgrim  Před 2 lety

I did not. I explained it a little later in the video: I just felt like the songwriting on the first and the second part is rather different, and since I still think of albums in terms of vinyl records it is pretty clear. But I don't think Dave ever mentioned anything like that himself, so that's just my observation! 🤘

I actually enjoyed the album and it’s gotten better after each listen! Just got my vinyl copy and will be spinning the shit outta it this long weekend! Yeah there’s a couple of tracks I’m not into 100% but that’s understandable and objective. To me it’s just like Dystopia, good tracks, solid release. Is it their best? Nah, but it’s still Megadeth and still keeps up with the pace they left off with Dystopia. I may be in the minority and I don’t know if it’s because at the time we weren’t expecting such a great record, but I still say Endgame is the best release they’ve had since Rust in Peace….

Good, I'm not the only one who still think that #5 or 6 is considered side 2 on a CD (#6 if a song on side A is under 3 minutes) I like the slower, more driving tunes, on this record you definitely know it's Megadeth by how the songs are structured.

Absolutely worth the hype. While Megadeth has delivered plenty of thrash goodness during their run of albums in the 21st Century, this album delivers a level of songwriting quality that places it in the top tier of Megadeth's catalog. Of course "The Sick, The Dying...and the Dead" doesn't beat the classics like "Rust" or "Peace Sells" or even "Countdown," but it stands pretty damn close behind those masterpieces.

This album kicks fucking ass! The musicianship is stellar, and the songwriting is killer, and the RIFFS! Oh my god finally Dave gets it! We LOVE the RIFFS! The production and mixing is a bit too pristine for my liking though... I loved Killing... and Peace Sells... more than Rust In Peace simply because I love the occult, dirty grit of those albums. Listening to Peace Sells.. back in the day felt like you were selling your soul to the devil just listening to it. I miss that. Same dirty grit as Testament's The Legacy and Yngwie Malmsteen's Marching Out... Delicious darkness...
