  • Dr. Malcolm Betruger is likely one of the most interesting characters in the Doom series. He worked hard for a company that undervalued him, and in response, he took it upon himself to find a different way to learn about Hell. Even if it came at the cost of the human population of Mars City.
Although regarded as the villain of Doom 3, and the expansion, Resurrection of Evil, Betruger, or the Maledict was also a victim of a system that did not value his creative vision. What pushed Dr. Malcolm Betruger to betray his species? How did he become The Maledict in The Resurrection of Evil? and how does his story end? In this video, I explore the lore and story behind Dr. Malcolm Betruger in Doom.

Doom 3 is Doom filtered through Half-Life, not Resident Evil. It’s a weird thing to say it’s not a Doom game - it is, in world and story. It just slows the gameplay down to something more methodical like Half-Life.
That said, an actual survival horror in Mars City a’la Resident Evil would be fantastic.

The important part of Doom 3 in my opinion is that it touched upon alot more on man-made horror and it was one of the few things I noticed about Doom 2016. Doom 2016 literally leans too much on demon gore and violence and doesn't touch enough upon the suffering and massacre that was done on humans. You literally hear tons of screams in Doom 3, human bodies strapped on the hell sections, etc., yet in Doom 2016, it's almost only just demons.

There is a fan theory that the ancient Martians in Doom 3 were possibly an offworld branch of the Sentinels from Doom 2016, aka the Bethian tribe of Hebeth or another tribe like them. That among the worlds the Sentinels colonized in the early days included the universe of Doom 3 Mars, since their slipstream tech seems similar to teleportation. So based on teleportation allowing travel between dimensions in the Doom games, the ancient Martians of Doom 3 were from Argent D'Nur. It would even make sense that Doomguy used the Soul Cube when he was still a Sentinel. But he didn't die, but was trapped in Hell. But the Agrent D'Nur Martian survivors didn't know this so they created a tomb to honor him, even if it was empty before they escape to Doom 3 Earth and possibly other planets, dimensions or back to Argent D'Nur.

Turning ripping and tearing to survival horror and a different, human protagonist instead of doom guy, really made you feel the weight and atmosphere dealing with hell. It’s a lot more serious and terrifying. Your content is great and I would definitely watch more Doom 3 videos should you make them.
I really enjoy Doom 3, I remember a degree of hate for the shift in tone when it first came out but I liked it then too. I am also a Resident Evil fan, monster horror in general really, but I'm don't think the two compare well. Although I could see a comparison between with RE5 and Village, Resident Evil 4 was the main RE game when Doom 3 was released and RE4 was shifting in the other direction with increasing action and comedy. While both Doom 3 and the RE games contain a horror element, the idea that Doom 3 made Doom more Resident Evil doesn't ring accurate to me, I don't really associate the word stealth with Doom 3 or the RE games of the period either.

Doom 3 is a DOOM game. The 1st 1/3 of the game focuses on survival horror like game play. With lots of zombie enemies, limited to no music, just the sounds of the facility in the background. Letting you know you are all alone. The silence also emphasize the loud screeching of an Imp from the shadows. Of which there are a lot. It is also the part of the game with the most supernatural phenomenons, horror themes and jump scare moments.
The 2/3 is more like a military shooter. This is where you'll mostly be fighting the various possessed marine types, along with mid level demons guarding important area. There will always be the odd Imp type that crawls along the ground hiding under something or in a dark corner and occasional jump scare. Just to keep you on your toes. But Imp encounters will usually be groups of 3 - 7+ teleporting in from multiple points behind, near and ahead of you. They'll also start spawning in to support the possessed Marines and mid level demons.
The last 3/3 you're Chasing Betruger to the the portal. You'll notice the horror is all but gone and the marines and their hitscan weapons are being replace by demons _(because you've pretty much killed them all)._ There are less jump scare Imps. But you should be accustom to them by now, making them more of a nuisance than anything.
Then you enter Hell. And from this point on it's a DOOM game. You are given unlimited stamina. No weapons, but soon recover all of them with more than enough ammo and get the berzerk power up. The levels are more arena like. So keep moving, keep shooting, keep dodging projectiles from all the demon types and prioritize targets.
I got Doom 3 three months after it came out for my new PC. Playing it at max graphics. The survival horror initially turned my off. So I played Half-life 2, Call of Duty and Dawn of War instead. As well as Halo 2 on Xbox. Then I got FEAR and Call of Duty 2. So I didn't properly play through and finish Doom 3 until 2006 and all I can say is. I wish I'd done it sooner. Great game.

Also I have only played the original PC release. Where you couldn't use the flashlight and gun at the same time. So a lot of the time when you switched back to your pistol, you'd be be firing into total darkness or a partial silhouette if you're lucky

Also, I have *no idea* how you got the idea Doom 3 has the gameplay of Resident Evil - yes, it's more horror-focused than prior installments of the franchise, but the gameplay really doesn't bear any semblance to RE. No puzzle items, no backtracking and constant revisiting of places you've been, no resource management and definitely no ammo shortages - literally every single defining element of RE is missing in Doom 3.

Personally, I think Half-life would be a more apt comparison to Doom3, and not just because it's also about teleportation gone wrong. It's the larger focus on exploration, puzzle solving, and environmental story-telling. Doom3 is still very much action-oriented unlike Resdient Evil's focus on survival, stealth, and completely different sense of progression.
I think the reason Doom3 was such a departure is because the first Doom games had such a simple formula that adding even a little would drastically change it, so by the time Doom3 had to come out, the FPS genre had evolved to the point that the developers were stuck with the choice of either making something too similar or too different. It wasn't until Doom 2016 that they had finally figured out how to take the original formula work again.

Doom 3's narrative structure is also strikingly similar to Half Life. Both start off with you as a new employee who spends some time exploring the facility while things are still safe, both involve you exploring increasingly classified areas, and lead to you exploring the source of the extra dimensional invasion. One difference is that HL1 ended with you defeating the final boss in the alien dimension while Doom 3 has you return back to the facility so you can track down the second portal; not unlike Opposing Force, as a matter of fact

In my opinion, there isn't a bad Doom game out there (with the exception of Doom RPG which I have not played and have no opinion on). Doom 3 was done a bit differently, sure, but the basic premise is there. Hell invades, protagonist proceeds to kick hell's ass. The game even had a creepy atmosphere. The random whispers and chanting was just icing on the cake. I remember the first time playing it, when the invasion first starts and you can hear all the gunfire and screaming over the comms periodically and then eventually it all just quiets down, incredible. I DO enjoy the new Doom series better and kind of wish they could have incorporated Doom 3's lore into it better but Doom 3 isn't a bad game by all means and I still highly recommend playing it, especially if you can get the BFG edition on sale.

Every Doom game was a product of its time. In 2004, this sort of slower-paced, story-driven FPS games were in fashion, so Doom 3 fit in pretty well. Another circumstance to consider is that Classic Doom was often criticised for being a "mindless shooter with no story" (which isn't true, of course), so Doom 3 was a response to this, in some ways.
The newer Dooms come at a time when the 90's shooter style is experiencing a revival, though Eternal seems to overcompensate, and thus "jumped the shark" with its over-the-top combat mechanics.
I agree - there are no "bad" Doom games, only different ones.

Doom 3 happens in a different part of Mars in Mars city in 2145 and Doom 4 takes place in a different region of Mars and 2149, which is years later.

I remember when Doom 3 came out, most of the NEWEST computers had issues running it cause ID software was a bit ahead of their time with this game.

Its system requirements were monstrous by 2004 standards. And today even cheaper PC's can run it on the Ultra setting... it feels weird.
