  • We are Stanford Talisman, a group of singers on Stanford’s campus who since our origins have sung music stemming from Black liberation struggles across the world. Our alumni and current group came together to create a virtual choir of Lift Every Voice and Sing, the Black National Anthem in America. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our fundraising campaign for the American Civil Liberties Union, Black Visions Collective, and the Transgender Gender-variant and Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP), we were able to raise over $10,000 for these causes!
    You can also check out our Instagram bio (@stanfordtalisman) for a list of further resources compiled by Alexis Williams, a 19-year-old Computer Science major at New York University. She is an African American and Latina coder committed to seeing change through action. Her website is a comprehensive source featuring educational resources, petitions to sign, a list of organizations seeking donations, and more.

    Beautifully sung!!! I was introduced to this powerful hymn by my beloved neighbor Mrs. McGowan, who invited my poor family to her home for Sunday evening meals. Gathering around her dining room table, we would hold hands and give thanks to God for the lives that made it possible to have us united together. We would start with "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" then we would conclude with "He's Got The Whole World in His Hands." Thank you Mrs. McGowan for opening my family's heart and mind and giving us the knowledge that we need to have respect for each other. Rest in Power Mrs. McGowan.

    Soooo, I'm a Mom of an 11 year old, and I was looking for a rendition to show him, as we e- learn I figured, now is the time to deep dive into our history, American, African American and African history.... did not know I would be literally crying five minutes after I started looking. I've never seen our National Anthem sung with such much diversity and just talent; I am moved beyond words, I have faith in our future, b/c you youngins are carrying the torch together... I'm only 51...that's youngish! lol but anyways thanks so much; this was an amazing find, and I can't wait to show it to my son; he attends a diverse school, so seeing this, I want him to continue to believe that this can be and in many cases is the norm... his norm is our new norm, and I'm really proud of you guys. Peace and Blessings!

      Keep searcing and finding. I have created a Nana Education Center at home for our 6yo. For him and the family the closure of schools has been a Godsend. Time on line wth classmates at neighborhood school he enjoys for social. The real learning is from education created by his grandmother for him. It keeps me who is retired engaged and busy. I like the 1967 NBC interview with MLK which allows us to never again ask our children to learn the Dream speak. He who gave the speech four years later referred to it as being a nightmare.

    The song was written in 1899 by James Weldon Johnson, who had been tasked with delivering an address to celebrate President Abraham Lincoln's birthday the following year. He began prepping for it, but as he writes in his autobiography, "I wanted something else also."
    He took his words to his younger brother, a classically trained composer named J. Rosamond Johnson, and "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" (as it is accurately titled) was born.

    1 Lift ev’ry voice and sing,
    till earth and heaven ring,
    ring with the harmonies of liberty.
    Let our rejoicing rise
    high as the list’ning skies,
    let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
    Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us.
    Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.
    Facing the rising sun
    of our new day begun,
    let us march on till victory is won.
    2 Stony the road we trod,
    bitter the chast’ning rod,
    felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
    yet with a steady beat,
    have not our weary feet
    come to the place for which our people sighed?
    We have come over a way that with tears has been watered.
    We have come, treading our path thro’ the blood of the slaughtered,
    out from the gloomy past,
    till now we stand at last
    where the bright gleam of our bright star is cast.
    3 God of our weary years,
    God of our silent tears,
    thou who hast brought us thus far on the way,
    thou who hast by thy might
    led us into the light,
    keep us forever in the path, we pray.
    Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee;
    lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee;
    shadowed beneath thy hand,
    may we forever stand,
    true to our God, true to our native land.

    Thank you for this powerful and moving rendition. James Weldon Johnson’s text us si superb in so many ways, and I’ve always found it irresistible. Still, your performance brought me this moment of insight. Johnson ends his poem by calling the us to be true to God and to “our native land”. What a moving invocation of motive for a black American in 1899: asserting his native born status against all comers and asserting his authority to define the values we are all called to uphold as Americans. If the Johnsons and the Freedom Marchers if 1899 could have such courage, who am I to be discouraged or to give up on this American project? Well done James Johnson, brother Rosamond, and Talisman Singers.

      Beautiful for sure... but wouldn't it be cultural appropriation to make it the national anthem for everyone?

      @@baruchhalevi4704 HI. I certainly would not appropriate anything. I hope I am appreciating this and saying that my black fellow citizens have made something beautiful out of their experience with the shame and pain of this country's racist history that does and should inform our understanding of our nation, where we have been and where we can go if we will stop labeling and start loving. We can stop denying the past, deal with the present and build a better future more in line with the values we all aspire to... life, liberty, justice, opportunity for everyone. Just like "black lives matter" is not just for African Americans, but something we all have to embrace, so this Anthem, though born from one community's struggle, is worthy to inform us all, and I would be proud to stand and hear it played. Regarding appropriation and what it isn't I found the following helpful... www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us-canada-53452080/why-i-fell-in-love-with-irish-dancing. Best regards.
