To have reached that level of emotional depth and artistic maturity at so young an age leaves me wondering what on earth she'll still be able to come up with in the 20+ years to come! I mean, how much better can she still get??
This is literally the first music of hers I’ve heard, just over a minute into this song, and I’m already very impressed. I first heard of her from reading an article about her that popped up on my news feed on my phone, and with each paragraph, I had to keep saying to myself “She GETS IT!” I’ve been hearing occasionally how women are under-represented in jazz, but to be honest, I think that’s largely a thing of the past now, and is more noticeable than other sorts of music, since jazz fans tend to listen to a lot of music from decades in the past. Zoh Amba , Hiromi, and Esperanza Spaulding will be regarded in years to come as some of the most significant jazz musicians of this generation, and it’s not because of their gender. Their music speaks for itself. The entire music industry has changed so much in the past couple decades, and one of the major benefits is that up and coming artists are no longer dependent on scoring a record deal with a major label to get their music out there, so not only are we able to discover so many artists that may not have gotten much exposure if the old ways of doing things had remained in place, but so many more are motivated to make music, since it’s so much easier for their music to reach people’s ears now. In the old days, it seemed like if an artist/band made a demo, and it didn’t get them a deal or get them really noticed, they often gave up on the dream.
This is Absolutely Beautiful! timeless and full of history. I could hear flavours of Pharaoh Sanders, John Coltrane, Archie Shep and as always with Zoh Albert Ayler 👍
