    A shot disturbs the eerie silence of a deserted city street, punctuated by the frantic footfalls of men seeking cover. One of Kruger’s last veteran nco’s lies motionless in the street. The remnants of the dead man’s squad are nowhere to be seen-scattered in nearby houses and gutters-all thoughts of the advance abandoned with the sudden demise of their leader...the compulsion for revenge obviously overcome by their instinct for self-preservation. Off to the right, Kruger’s own men have located the source of the lethal shot and are laying down a steady stream of fire on the church steeple directly ahead. The absence of responding fire suggests that the lone Russian marksman has beat a hasty retreat or been victimized by the withering fire of the German retort. Kruger has seen enough. He is to occupy the church and set up a regimental observation post at once. His orders leave no leeway for delays by a single sniper. He gives the signal to rush the building. Obedient to their training, his men, veterans of France, the Balkans, and 18 months of fighting in Russia, spring to their feet. Seconds later the sharp, staccato retort of a Russian machinegun concludes with the assertiveness of death itself that this time Kruger was wrong...
    This is Squad Leader...a game of WWII tactical combat in Europe. Now you make the instant decisions resulting in life or death for your men, victory or defeat for your army...for YOU are the Squad Leader. YOU direct the fire of your squad, select your plan of attack, or set your defenses against massed Russian human wave or armor assaults. Will that hedgerow provide adequate cover for your flanking efforts, or will your men be cut down by the American machinegun position in the woods? The decision is irrevocable and yours alone. You must live or die by the results.
    Squad Leader utilizes programmed instruction to guide you through 12 scenarios of increasing realism and complexity. The scenarios run the gamut from street fighting in Stalingrad to armored advances across snow covered roads in the Ardennes. A Campaign Game ties the individual scenarios together and allows your own personal leader counter to advance in rank and ability. In addition, a “Design Your Own” section is included so that players can create an unlimited number of play situations of their own creation.
    Each hex in Squad Leader represents 40 meters of real terrain with counters representing individual leaders, support weapons, and vehicles or 4 man crews and 12 man squads. Each game turn is divided into two player turns with 8 phases, equivalent to two minutes of actual time.
    Squad Leader is more than just a game, it is a game system which can be used to portray any WWII infantry action. Its innovative system does for infantry combat what Panzerblitz and Panzer Leader have done for armored warfare games. Squad Leader provides innovative rules for morale, leadership, machineguns, flamethrowers, demo charges, smoke, hidden placement, sewer movement, off-board artillery, radio contact, anti-tank guns, night actions, wire, entrenchments, mines, bunkers, rubble, multi-story building differentiation, fire, river crossings, roadblocks, mortars, and much more.
    Be forewarned! Squad Leader is not an easy game. Do not attempt it without prior wargaming experience. Squad Leader is rated Tournament Level IV on the A.H. Complexity scale.

    The best small unit tactical game ever made. I loved how machine guns could fire down streets. First time that was ever modeled. In the Tractor Works I remember playing against my friends as the Germans in the USAF back in the '70s and popping smoke, running my assault engineers into the smoke adjacent to the fanatical Russians who would get point blank fire modified by smoke. Most of the time the high morale of the engineers allowed them to survive while revealing the question mark counters. On the close combat phase the engineers would move into the hex and CC the fanatical Soviets. Great stuff, fond memories.

      Yes, this scenario is especially memorable for a lot of people! Thanks for sharing!

    Really appreciate your effort with this post. Keep them coming. When first introduced to SL as a youth many years ago, I was immediately hook and spent many hours playing SL with friends. Adult life intervened and now I finally have an opportunity to revisit this classic AH game after all these years. This video helps reinforce the manual and my recollection of rules of play. Well done.

    Still the most played and exciting board game in my adult life. I have not gone beyond SL into ASL, but had SL COI and COD to play throughout my university life in the UK.
    We LOVED it, and it probably saved us hundreds of pounds NOT going to the bars and pubs.
    Later I got GI (set 4) and a lot later I got extra unmounted expansion boards from the USA.
    I don't have any gamers in Devon who would play this now: but wow what a collection. What possibilities with all those boards.

    Loved this game as a teen. My friend and I spent hundreds of hours playing that. These scenarios bring back lots of great memories. I wish these vid had been around them, we always muddled through he rules lol

    It looks like a lot has changed since I got my copy of SL back in 1977 ! The restriction on engineers only using flamethrowers and satchels, the MP penalty for moving through smoke and the ability to throw smoke and still move and fire all spring to mind.
    Or maybe those rules were there in the 77 version but I am just getting old, I'm going to have to drag out my copy and look it up !

      I was referring to the 2nd edition rules - so there may have been some changes!

    This is pretty good stuff! Like many of the commenters, I have not played in a long time and would like to get back into the game. (My set is old and moldy already.) I even have Cross of Iron and Crescendo of Doom. I am definitely looking forward to Scenario 3.

      Great! It is already written, just need to do the recording and editing. Hope to get it done soon!

    One of my favorite tactics was to throw the demo pack into the lower levels of the buildings if the enemy is on an upper level. If a KIA is rolled. That whole hex become rubble. I use that tactic in certain circumstances.

    Best scenario? Streets of Stalingrad from original SL.
    Capture of Balta maybe (in Cross of Iron). Though Hubes Pocket was wild!
    Action at Balberkamp was great: multiple reinforcements, time pressure on both sides (Crescendo of Doom)
    Finally, Action at Kommerscheidt was nice to see powerful allied tanks in action (G.I. Anvil of Victory)

    Could you modify these to make a presentation on ASL? These on SL are top shelf, clear, concise, no meandering!

  • @John-zm3eq
    @John-zm3eq Před 2 lety +4

    You have a big choice coming up. Are you going to go with the original AFV rules or are you going to jump right to the ones in Cross of Iron that eventually replaced them?

    • @LegendaryTactics
      @LegendaryTactics  Před 2 lety +1

      It's tough - I may do both. What's your recommendation?

    • @John-zm3eq
      @John-zm3eq Před 2 lety +2

      @@LegendaryTactics You could make a good case for either one. Personally, I'd like to see the Cross of Iron rules but I kind of know how the book ends (at least until Crescendo). However, for people new to the system, the original rules might be the way to go since they might not make it to Cross of Iron. It's a lot more expensive on Ebay than I would have thought.

    • @LegendaryTactics
      @LegendaryTactics  Před 2 lety +1

      That's a good idea! I think I will just go over the 2nd edition rules as is, and if the How To Play Squad Leader series makes it to Cross of Iron, I will do another video about it at that time. Thanks so much! (And yes, some of those old games are super expensive on EBay)
