Don't believe I've ever rev-bombed. If you've got time to do that, you've got time to take an evasive maneuver and avoid the situation and be thankful that it wasn't worse. 🙏
Every day I'm out riding - I think about the scenarios I saw in your videos. I know you're moving on to other ventures, but wanted to say thanks for providing me with real-world examples of stuff that *WILL* happen to every rider and getting me in the right mindset to take evasive action.
It truly is a great feeling. My bike is my daily and I've only been riding for 6 weeks. I had to take evasive action 4 weeks ago as a truck pulled in front of me in a 50 and i was going 55. I maintained my speed and leaned harder then ever before. Since then I've grown very comfortable with leaning.
@@Dragonstorm1557GAMING Welcome to the world of motorcycling! Congrats on keeping the shiny side up. Please purchase the best gear your budget will allow, and use it. All The Gear All The Time. Act like you're invisible and you'll be prepared for a lot of close calls.
Thanks Dan, Rev bombing is pointless. All the noise is coming out of the rear and the faster you go the quieter it gets. Riding with your high beam on has been proven to attract collisions. Car drivers unconsciously drive toward whatever is blinding him or her, think 'deer in the headlights'. In the car, with the radio blaring and the windows closed, driven by a distracted driver on the phone. They don't give a shit! It's up to you to protect yourself! Cool down, pay attention and avoid getting your nickers in a knot. Stop giving the finger, they don't care. Let them be assholes, your job is to survive! Assume everybody is out to kill you and ride accordingly. Never rides angry!
I agree fully. The last rider in the video is revbombing, has full beam on, both didn't help him at all, although I don't think the high beam was a cause of any trouble in this situation neither. He wouldn't have to be facing backwards and swerving into the lane of oncoming traffic as a result though if he'd just left the mirrors on. Probably thinks the bike looks more cool without them, which might be true. But they sure are useful.
I thought the height beam makes it hard to judge distance at night for them?
I've been selling cars for a few years now. One thing I've noticed is almost no one angles their side view mirrors correctly so the blind spot on most vehicles is huge. If you are next to a vehicle It's almost a guarantee they don't see you.
I won't stay in a blind spot. If I'm passing a vehicle I try not to stay next to them any longer than necessary. If I'm passing a large truck I usually stay back behind their rear until there's enough room for me to get completely around them, then pass them quickly.
I don't get how this isn't stressed more in driver's ed for teenagers, and anytime someone has to test for a license. States should also be doing PSAs about adjusting mirrors seeing as how common of a failure this is. For whatever reason, many people feel the need to see the side of the own vehicle, and the curb next to their car when they park, is more important than seeing what is next to them and eliminating blind spots while driving. It's maddening.
You're correct, for some reason most people align their side mirrors to see the back of their car which is ridiculous, the rear mirror is for behind and the side mirrors for the side not to point to the rear of the car.
I always look over my shoulder before moving anyway but the majority do not but I just can't understand why so many have to point their side mirrors to look at the rear of their car or the rear quarter panel.
Yeah most people suck at aligning their mirrors I went and adjusted mine by parking and placing some objects in my blind spot. Veeeeerrrry few people do that.
I’m about to enjoy a totally white stage breakfast…
Um, are you still interested in a Black Sea Weed Sandwich from McDonald’s or something
@kogasoldier9379 Some people think it's just a "Go fast" and save 2 minutes!!
Dan, excellent breakdown and feedback with MSF terminology paired with medical experience! I love your analysis of each situation. I ride year-long for work and school in Atlanta area. Rain, shine, or cold. Lots of urban, inner city, and highway about 45min to 1 hour ride each way. As a lady rider, I see and experience most of these scenarios. Yes! Avoid blind spots. Always go orange/ready on each intersection, even after 🚦light changes! I ride ‘22 HD Street Bob. I have no cameras, not sure about value of showing my husband all of my near misses. I ride knowing I am not seen. I mix defensive riding, with patience, and lots of prayers. Thank you for your videos!
It juat boggles my mind of how riders do not think about "Life"!! I just don't get it. Just because you have a nimble mode of transportation does not mean you take advantage of it. If you don't care about yourself, at least care about the ones whom care about your life, lost over a stupid decision. I am grateful for your years and years of caring and instructing!! Thank you, DDTFM!!
Thanks, Dan. I've been watching your videos before I took the MSF course last year. You've really opened my eyes to the nuances of riding and it's taken my situational awareness on the road to a new level. Thank you!
A friend of mine lost his life when he was passing a truck that he had been following for awhile, the truck signaled that it was turning left, and as I have done and many of us do, my friend started to pass a little too early, the truck changed his mind and swerved back into the lane, and the tailgate that was in the down position hit my friend in the ribs sending him off road, his wife was a passenger and survived, he didn’t. The truck driver did not do it intentionally, it was a reaction because he was turning onto the wrong road. Close calls and stories teach us valuable lessons. Ride Safe my Brothers and Sisters. Go fast don’t die.
Man I have so much to learn. I crashed a few days ago and honestly watching as many videos as I can retain. Practice guys for real!!!!
7:07 If I'm not mistaken is the German autobahn which in this case the car should have known better. It's very normal for high speed vehicles to come up behind you that quick.
Yeah, this is definetly the Autobahn, probably between the Rhine Area and the Netherlands. Sign @ 7:09 tells us to switch to the A1 to get to Venlo (Netherlands) or Köln
And on German Autobahns the German phrase "Rechts stehen, links gehen" is the same as rule for escalators! You bet a vehicle will quickly come up behind you if you don't stay in the right lane when you are travelling slow/slower than the speedsters.
You look in your mirror and no one's there, a second later a bike is passing you. It's on the biker to be safe going those speeds, particularly when he can see the car but the car can't see him.
Just got my license a few days ago and I’m happy I found your channel. Really helps to know what to look for and the actions I can take if I come across situations like these.
I'm glad you are here to help them be better drivers. I have a hard time watching it. I learned to drive in Los Angeles when with the flow of traffic laws 90 was the norm in the high speed lane. Thanks for helping them.
Almost 500 episodes you've created for us! Tysm for the exceptional content! 🤘🏽🤙🏽
More people need to watch your channel! On a group ride yesterday and another rider rear-ended me. Guy had a street glide with probably $50k in it. Following too close and locked up rear tire. Told me he needed ABS because it happens every time he has to stop fast. I think he has no idea how to use the front brakes, and been riding for a long time...smh 🤬

Dan, Thanks for all you do, and have done for our community. I'll look for you next time I'm in my hometown, Tucson. Take care, be safe, and God Bless.
Thank man, I try to think about the points you make when I ride.
12:40 this is unfortunately very commen in Colorado especially Denver (lane splitting isn't legal here) and a lot of drivers take it upon themselves to "enforce the law" at the risk of others lives. even had a semi do this to me once.
I lane split in super high congestion areas on the interstate in Des Moines, speeds dip in the 10s and 20s with tail traffic locking it up and shooting out of their lane of travel.
It’s the lane splitter that is risking their life and making an unsafe situation.
@user-vw4ln2gq8f I don't disagree with you lane splitting is dangerous and your risking your life doing it. But that does not excuse the action of another motorist pit maneuvering a motorcycle. Two wrongs do not make a right if the motorist is concerned they can call 911 and report the motorcycle.
@@user-vw4ln2gq8f EXCEPT these cagers are SO G** D*** CONVINCED that two wheels can ONLY ever be lane splitting or "dead centered" in the lane to ride legally, that even shifting to the side of the lane to get a bit better view WILL send one of them careening into two or three others and raising all manner of HELL on the highway...
JUST two weeks ago, I was out on a rural route, and for a shift in the curve/camber of the road, visibility around the guy in front of me diminished... SO I rode over toward the double-yellow to look further down the road. It's a pretty notorious stretch for people randomly pulling out of blind sideroads, driveways, and a couple parking lots...
BUT just as I eased over to the side, he whipped it over to STRADDLE the double yellow so I couldn't possibly get past, EVEN if I'd wanted to... I'd been behind him by about 2... 2 and a half seconds for damn nearly 15 miles before... AND while he was SO BUSY agonizing over little ol' me on my little red bike, he took out a minivan in front of a school bus, and DAMN nearly hit the bus!
No defending bad riders... BUT no defending YOU ASSHOLES in your g** d*** cages making EVERYTHING WORSE than it already has to be! Get a sensible HUMAN SIZED vehicle and drive like you've got a g** d*** lick of brains between your f***in' ears! That's ALL it takes... Otherwise, the goofy scrawny guy on that aged little red cruiser from Japan is GOING TO BE LAUGHING AT YOU when you run yourself off in the ditch and turn a bunch of other innocent people into shrapnel!!! ;o)
That braking , and find the escape is a good skill to learn .
I live in switzerland , and when you want to drive a motorbike , you have to do a 3 day trainingcourse with a professional driver . He teaches you this things , how to avoid such nearby crashes .
I will recommend anyone of you to do thid trainings, it will help you a lot . Greetings from switzerland .
My son & I are getting our M1 licenses soon and we find these videos with your commentary really useful. Thanks!
You read these situations very well. Thanks for your advice!
The voice of Rationality. Thank you
Pick up trucks, Karens in SUV’s & teenagers texting are always the dangers you have to watch out for !
If your panic-reflex is rev-bombing instead of finding safety, I don't know what to tell you other than "take the bus, buddy."
Dan, great explanation! I am about to do my license in Germany and your vids help tremendously in advance! Can't prevent everything but some for sure.
Pickup owners are some of the most aggressive drivers on the road I swear. Takes that compensating stereotype to a whole new level.
Great video!!!!
That first clip; when you don’t agree with the reason but are impressed with the deeds.
18:04 but was the biker signaling a left turn? The truck probably thought the biker was going straight across
Bravo. You nailed it. It's jenke that the truck driver only had a yield sign instead of stop sign though.
Just had exactly the same thought: did he indicate that he was about to turn left? If he didn't that could explain why the truck driver decided to go on
Good videos, lessons learned.
ALWAYS Look foward. 👌
i like these, your teaching how to ride. ty
Thanks in part to your videos, a year of riding I've only had one close call when a car blasted past me from behind half in my lane half in the emergency lane when I was just flowing with traffic... pretty sure he/she was on something, they did it to the traffic in front of me too...
I've had people partially merge into me on the freeway, but those never felt too sketchy since I was on a bike and had space, even with a car on both sides. Too many riders are in fight or flight mode when riding rather than just staying alert and calm. I ended up selling the bike because after a while it stopped feeling fun enough to deal with the light ambient anxiety, not stressful, just had to always be on. Might get an adventure bike or track specific bike some day so I can actually push them at times, rather than wait behind cars in a canyon or traffic.
@17:50 the truck actually has right of way not the motorcycle. Neither vehicle was required to stop. the vehicle make a right turn would have RoW over the left turning vehicle.
Giant blind spots on cars. If you drive a car, look at your own blindspots they are huge.they can hardly see you on the right until your up to the passenger window.
Especially since drivers hardly adjust the mirror on that side
anyone know what bike is that at 3:48? those clocks looks gorgeous.
So much of what you review and teach has always felt like common sense and instinct to me when riding. I suppose it exists at various levels for different folks
6:36 what does the lower right corner thing mean and what kind o cam do i need that has compass and speed-o-meter ?
When I first started driving I was always watching dash cam footage and accidents to try and analyze traffic, now I want to start riding motos so I'm doing research haha
As a future rider, great informative VID. Thanks. I do have a question of WHEN lane splitting IS legal. I thought the traffic HAS to be slower than a certain speed to do this. The original idea is for traffic jams and NOT slow but moving traffic.
Last scene, the bike had right of way- to go straight! As a lawyer, I can tell you that turning left, you almost always own liability.
Hey Dan can you recommend a fairly price camera for my helmet I’m a new rider and Ohio is horrible
I'm just gonna go to the local track from this point on. public riding is a mess.
I'm a freshly minted rider after attending the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, getting my endorsement, and acquiring much needd insurance coverage. I've been riding for about a month when I discovered your videos here on how to spot escape routes. Thanks for providing me these toolsets to stay alive. Riding has been exhilirating and others often say, "It's not a matter of 'if' you crash, but 'when.'" I am hoping for never, but at least I'm sharpening my skills by watching your vids. Thanks, Man. By the way, I'm riding for the first time after serving 31 years, 2 months, and 8 days in prison. Learning to ride a motorcycle was a freedom dream, and someone gifted me a Harley-Davidson 1995 Sportster. Paying it forward, I'm going to use the bike to go back into the prison system with it and be a motivational speaker to other incarcerated men and women. My message is that if God will do it for me, he can do it for you. Do you know any biker ministries going into the prisons that I may connect with?
After three decades I'd never want to see a prison ever again! Heck I haven't done any time and STILL don't want to go near them!
Hey dandanthefireman! Is there a way we could send you videos of our close calls or experiences?
Is it not mandatory in the US to use your turn signals when changing lanes or turning etc? I've seen so many videos where people don't use them at all.
Anyone would think that those bikers who throw tantrums, rev bomb and act like 5 year olds have never made a mistake. I enjoy riding far more when I blame myself for making the mistake of thinking that Car drivers wont do anything stupid. It also feels good to anticipate dangerous situations that develop from not being seen and get prepared for them. No fuss, no drama, good braking, smooth swerving and a nice escape can just add to the fun of riding a motorcycle. Thumbs up and a smile for that crazy driver who just tested my riding skills and gave me another oppurtunity to practice a few more life saving manovers.
I saw a pattern 2 pickup trucks where working the road ,,, on purpose against mc s ,could be piggies or agents
the first clip doest make any sense, ofc the rider is in the bad here and should have stoped, but If you see the timing, where there is still yellow the cars in front start turning, isnt there any delay there? lights turn green for the others before is lights turn red?
that 2nd care flashed it light to help him out . I wonder if he saw the 2nd car doing that
in Ecuador, cars push bikes out of their lanes as a matter of course. we expect it and are ready.
I used to work for an engineer and he told me to never ride faster than 40 kph, I didn't really take that at heart at first but after a few close calls like nearly hitting a girl who crossed the street immediately without looking back behind her and nearly t boning another bike that turned immediately right in a blind corner without looking left for incoming vehicles, I've promised myself to follow that rule. And if I want to go fast I'll go to a track and go ham there.
I don't think he had the right of way to make a left turn when he did NOT signal left. Pickup thought he was going strait. There really should be stop sign there for the truck, not a yield. Jenke intersection.
Was that first example a strange intersection? Or was it in the Uk ? It looked like a five way intersection.
Dan,
In another video of yours you said something like (and I’m paraphrasing), “Don’t flip stupid drivers off!!. Give them the Thumbs Down signal instead,”
Flipping people off, infuriates them.
“Giving them a Thumbs Down embarrasses them, and that should be the goal.”
My ex-husband is an anesthesiologist, and when he did his ER rotation in his residency he told me that motorcycle accidents were called road kill. This was years ago, but it was a terrible visual. I'm very careful around motorcycles.
Depends on your speed when you crash, if you're going really fast they'll call you "ground beef"
17:43 The question is did the rider use the blinker signaling he was making a left turn. If NOT, it is easy to imagine the truck would assume the rider would go straight and nothing to yield to.
Talking about Riding the Line I live in Northern Thailand and these people are way over in your lane when they come around a curve!
LOS issues will kill you more often than not, also, take your gd phone of your handlebars; plan your route ahead and keep your eyes up.
My husband was in a near fatal accident last year it was on the freeway and a guy was hauling a trailer and had the tire ramps zip tied to the trailer and the zip tie snapped and it hit him at 60 mph he had a helmet on but it was really hot so he didn't want to wear the jacket (Texas heat) he got bad road rash, broken ribs, broken wrist and a brain bleed. He got another bike and then 8 months from the first wreck he was in another wreck a lady pulled out front of him and he t-boned her he broke the same wrist from the first wreck
Just got a license, buying a heritage soon, looks to me like so many bikers are out looking for a fight, especially for CZcams, seems like you just need to expect drivers to not see you and ride that way, so much could be avoided
18:15 This is an unusual situation where *straight through* is supposed to yield to left turning vehicles. It is SO unusual that the driver of the pickup truck maybe didn't see the yield sign but also may have simply ignored it as seems rather common where I live.
Looks to me like the motorcyclist didn’t have his indicator on, so the pickup truck wouldn’t have known he needed to yield…
What motorcycle is that at 13:00?
What do you think about kawasaki636 ?
That truck at 16:25 has definitely lost a mirror to a bike before. Once the bike got up next to him he went as far left in his lane as he could.
Another episode of guys in big trucks with little wieners. Ride safe all!
i have to specify the speed of some clips is because they are on the autobahn in germany
Yeah I realized there's people out on the roads that just have a malice towards bikers, and want to kill/hurt us just because.
The very first rider was following the age old rule of, yellow light means drive like hell.
Situation awareness
I fell down the rabbit hole @ 17:15. I paused the video to find this intersection on Google Maps because I couldn’t understand why the white truck had a yield sign. Took about 20 minutes but I find it. This intersection is complete trash. The design/layout can cause major issues. The yield sign needs to be a stop sign or install traffic lights. 😬 Thanks DanDan for the vids ❤
Just to get a few cars ahead.....welcome to Houston.....Everyday!!!! Why??!!!
Lane splitting may be legal, but add speeding and blind spots and….
Yeah i took the future way when riding bikes and built my own home made electric bike.
Its a on a bike frame with a 48v 1500w hub motor.
So that thing can get quick and zippy. However its top is a mere 39mph.
But taught me so many skills and techniques to apply when riding among other folks. I always assume that drivers dont see me. And thats helped me alot and also its quiet i get to.stealth around the city and neighborhood.
I did planned on saving up for a honda grom or monkey. UNTIL i chose to put up the ebike.
I find ebike is jusss fast enough but damn it feels hellla fast
The jeep entering the lane one was silly, our POV rider was way too close to begin with.
So many of the riders in these videos are speeding, and/or riding dangerously, and so often their reaction is to blame the driver of the car. A big reason why many of the car driving public see motorcyclists as douchebags.
Reviewing this footage is clutch... (see what I did there) haha.. THNX
I always tell beginner riders, if you can't see the drivers face in the mirror, they can't see you
I saw most if not all of this on the live stream I think.
Look where you want to go. Pretty important statement
There should be jail-time, bike forfeiture, and punishing fines for rev-bombing.
Second last situation guy has high beams on during daylight. 😨
When a car just turns in front of you head on like my friend went out. There is not a damned thing you can do.
The white truck @ 17:20. Very bad situation, and one of my worst fears. I under no circumstances will follow I scrappers or people with non straped construction equipment. I'm taking for granted the pipes are not strapped in since they are all loose hanging over with no flag. If he's not following the law on one side of the load , usually means it's the same on the otherside. I agree if you see any opportunity to get in front , take it. Or drop back at least 6 car lengths. Worst feeling in the world is when something flies out of a truck. Once it hits the ground its so unpredictable its like Russian roulette. Just my opinion.
@16:30. those kidn of drivers are rare in most of California. the vast majority actually make room for you.
7:16 that's why you pass on the left and not the right
It is baffling how many of these close calls are related with overtaking on the right or just having your default place on the road be on the right.
I know it is like shouting to a brick wall but damn the road laws in the US are stupid and it is not surprising that so many incidents happen like this...
(3m ago) 😮
Feels illegal to be this early
Interesting that the riders that react the most agressive to near hits are the one who has the most resposibility on their own. Most of them are way to fast or ride the wrong line and than kick mirrors or something like that ...
To be honest I'd say that jeep didn't actually see him because of a blind spot.
Riding a bike in traffic is nearly like walking in a area full of lions unarmed!
Is the general rule in the US to pass slow vehicles from the right side, as in Europe this is even forbidden. Not only it is dangerous, if police sees you, you can get fine for that
If you can’t deal with being cut off don’t ride a motorcycle. I get cut off roughly once every other day because of impatient drivers.
That's pretty much sportbikers in a nutshell...they think they're entitled to cut people off on a whim...but when someone does it to them...whoa, WHOA!
I don't even ride, but I watch these all the time. Don't worry guys I'll pick up my CBR soon!
I was riding up a big two lane (on each side - so 4 lanes) sweeping bend once - a big road with about a 40 degree incline. I was on the inside lane in the bend (this is on a left hand driving road like the UK) nicely tipped over. A guy on a harley coming down the hill towards me on the other side, in the tighter part of the bend, lost control of his bike, crossed the middle lane, and passed me in the outside lane on my side of the road. Lucky for him, him and me were the only vehicles on the road. If there had been any other traffic on my side he would have been squashed like a bug. Notorious part of an old coastal highway so we were both doing well over 100kmh. Not the only stupid shit Ive seen from bike riders but one of the most memorable just for the "holy shit!" factor. That guy definitely overestimated his skills and the handling qualities of his machine. I just kept my line because it was obvious he was going to miss me. But if anything else had been there he would have been a statistic. No questions.
The rev bombing reaction is wild to me, whenever I am in a situation like this, I always take action first and usually forget my horn exists, horn/rev bombing is such an afterthought over finding a safe path. The only time I've really successfully used my horn is in slow speed things like parking lots.
This is how I know "loud pipes save lives" is utter bull. That truck didn't even hesitate despite all the growling and spitting coming from the biker. He could have gotten himself to safety, but instead he wanted to challenge a freaking pickup by... being loud.
@@wordwoman9900Well that's a little different, him being loud by rev bombing is a little different because it is more in the moment compared to a Harley style loud pipe that is constantly loud. It just makes people aware of the bike being there. It may help with people unintentionally doing something to put the biker in a dangerous situation because of the awareness. However, if the person just doesn't give a shit, it doesn't help with that.
That's why I like my Honda Navi, impossible to rev-bomb. 🤣
I agree 100%. You said it much nicer than I do.
I'm the same way, @Guffrs
