The Day Black Flag DIED: Henry Rollins BASED Adventures
Black Flag is an American punk rock band formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California. Initially called Panic, the band was established by Greg Ginn, the guitarist, primary songwriter, and sole continuous member through multiple personnel changes in the band. Henry Rollins, original name Henry Garfield, (born February 13, 1961, Washington, D.C., U.S.), American singer, poet, monologuist, and publisher whose tenure as the lead vocalist of Los Angeles hardcore group Black Flag made him one of the most recognizable faces in the 1980s punk scene

vibes. thanks for watching, doggies.
You’re welcome kitty cat!
My guy, Greg Ginn was channeling late period Coltrane in his solos. If they’re atonal, that’s the point. If you can’t hang with it, that’s the process of weeding out.
👏👏👏
Has anyone heard My War from start to finish? It’s amazing but it will cost you your life. Damaged is one of the best punk records of all time. Got me through a lot of shit
My War set a pace that the punks weren't quite ready to deal with but ulitmately had to contend with.
@@OccupyJordan to this day, I don’t think I can handle it lol
I love that album. I have both My War and Slip It In in constant rotation
@@TheJinjo75 I borrowed Slip it in from someone when I was a teen. First Black Flag record I heard. I like how the title track and The Bars musically compliment each other. The Bars is one of my favorites by them
@@IngeDingy I cant tell you how many times I have listen to Slip It In while working out in the last decade. One of my go to albums.
I understand why dont like My War (Its not for everyone) but I love that record too.
The Nervous Breakdown EP and Damaged album quite literally saved my life. I love all Black Flag; Keith, Ron, Dez, Henry, whoever.
TV Party was fun.
Rollins Band was quitely ahead of their time and solid
You neglected to mention The Process of Weeding Out. A well recorded intense Black Flag insturmental record.
It's like side 2 of Family Man. I liked it at the time but I don't listen to any Rollins era BF anymore.
I disagree, my war is one of the best albums ever. And I feel like the thing you didn’t like about it, a sloppy punk band trying to do an ambitious metal sound is what makes it work for me.
Bro, in the many Rollins tours I have seen from him, I think I have listen to him talk about Black Flag once. What the hell are you talking about him talking about the past?
so you are telling me that a tv party is not fun?????
Dude, you neglect to mention why there were no Black Flag releases after Damaged. Also check out the Biscuts Demos to get a taste of a potential post Damaged release.
Love your content but strongly disagree with almost all of your perspectives.
Cheers keep up the great work kid
Hahahah every comment where someone calls dan a kid I laugh so loud. He’s almost 40. 🎉
Dude I hadn’t listened to My War in like 15 years. I had forgotten how good it was!!!
Ohhh Danny Boyyy the pipes are calling
Wrong.
TV Party was one of the funnest moments in Punk history. .
What? Black Flag is fun, songs like TV Party and Black Coffee are really pretty goofy, fun songs
I'm surprised this kid don't get more views. I've been a punk since 85 and I think it's so rad youngsters are into this. Remind us why bad brains is the most underrated band of all time.
I love that you think a near 40 year old man is a youngster! Hahaha
It might be because watching anything that he's reacting to gets super annoying when he pauses the video every one second just to say either what is going to happen or what just happened in a video. Most of his stuff is awesome though.
@@justinx590 this reply does not make sense. At all.
bad brains i never listend to moore cause never had a store tht sold the albums and yet every store sold tht shirt . i miss days when we just shared cassettes and made mix copies buut i think now its cool i can youtube any song buuut i dont think the bands like it . but we gotta hustle
Black Flag are a Punk Novelty like The Dead Milkmen. Let's talk about Septic Death, N.O T.A, Negazone, Posion Idea, Jerry's Kids, Necros, The Freeze, Gang Green, The Dicks, Final Conflict etc.
I don't think Henry is self absorbed, he is very accepting of others. But he needs to be around people who understand the struggle and are constantly fighting against it
Black Flag didn't die with In My Head. Black Flag was brutally murdered. I was there. It happened at 12:53 rip
Fr
Unpopular opinion: my favorite era was with Rollins. Even the later stuff.
Keith Morris Black Flag is best Black Flag
I wanna see a Keith Raniere Black Flag
it was called FLAG.
Ron and dez are the top for me
That first four years tape is a masterpiece
Dez Cadena and Ron Reyes >>>>>>>>>>>>>
bought the Jealous Again ep (which I still have), saw them at a bar called Fryfogels in London Ontario 1982. . . great show. . . I yelled out "do the creepy crawl" to Henry and he jumped off the stage (to do the creepy crawl) and he hurt his knee badly. . . . show stops for 20 minutes. . . they start up again. Saw them again at The Embassy (london ON) in 84 with St Vitus Dance. Very good show. You hit the nail on the head with much of your commentary.
My War - best album ever! Slip it In - best guitar solos ever!
Ever?
@@trashcanjam maybe not ever, but darn close!😜
@@dlwseattle 😂😂 love it
The Everything Went Black album is the best by far. It's like a greatest hits before Henry.
Well I think Bad Brains shared the pinnacle of harcore during the early 80s. Just beneath them, Minor Threat and Dead Kennedys.
I just don’t think you get black Flag, couldn’t even finish the video
If they were fun, they'd be Circle Jerks.
Can't really judge by the records. Their live sound was faster than what's on the records.
Can you do a video on Ben weasel/screeching weasel?
And Mr t experience
black flag shows looked fun af
A couple days ago I was walking my dog and thinking about the fact that Rollins is the 4th best singer of Black Flag. Ronny Rayes is was my favorite singer, and Ginn’s guitar solos annoy the shit out of me.
🔥🔥🔥Awesome content!!
You weren't there.
“So I have to give the credit for whatever fucking reason.” Best Dan quote yet!
First 3 eps before damaged are all you need to listen to for Black Flag
black flag was never about beer, or party scene. they made those songs to make fun of their audience. i think the reason black flag changed their direction was because of rollins.
going to see them in march
Their first record wasn't damaged. Some say they'd died after one of the records they put out BEFORE damaged. Plus the Damaged songs about beer were ironic about "yay beer paaaaarty" type people.
Rollins spoken word shows are actually very funny for the most part . Check out the ones related to his decade long attempt to out perform Iggy Pop. In regards to your opinions on the Black Flag material (I'm 57 by the way) I didn't like much past My War myself though I was a huge fan . One thing I have always tried to do is never give my favorite artists a free pass. No matter how much I admire them, if it's not working for me I admit it. I know to many people that just say "This is awesome!" simply because they love the artist.
Let’s see. What’s their epitaph? What year did they actually pass away
Henry Rollins spoken word stuff totally makes up for the person he was during his days in black flag dude is hilarious. I think you just don’t like fun…
Black Flag was fun on the First Four Years, then Henry joined and fun was over.
Nice take here. Cool vid. You know Ray Pettibon is actually Ray Ginn, yeah? Greg's older brother.
i doubt henry would like any of us
Ron Reyes did the artwork for the What The? Regarding Vallely era Flag you need to look at Good For You what he an Ginn wanted to do, but then other members started playng live as Flag!!!! and cashed in with Vallely Flag.
Henry & Harley: gym bros for life!
TV party... fun. Everything Went Black Crass Commercialism side ... fun.
My hearts pumping from What The is the only song I like off that one lol
Kieth was the 1st, and the best imo. Ron too. Both those guys vocals made those songs big for me. Nothing against henery..Henry...
Ham radio is not for broadcasting shows. The FCC doesn't allow it.
Wow. I’d like to hear YOUR art buddy. You give the impression that somehow your green made nd somehow has something anyone would cars about
Chin up, buttercup. It's a beautiful day to feel alive ✨️
Retired At 21 is a fun song.
Black Flagg doesn’t make sense till you feel something you feel angry black flagg you feel upset you feel misplaced black Flagg
I mean T.V. Party, Slip It In and Spray Paint The Walls was pretty fun 🙃
Come on mate the music video for TV Party is a blast!
Dan, have you ever seen the history channel show hosted by Henry Rollins?! Check it out!
My War was Black Flag trying to be Flipper
Finally got something right black flag had maybe three ok songs when Keith was in em peace lloydy
Woman hating?
Dude has no clue about ham radio. Maybe that's good. But you can't broadcast radio shows on ham bands.
Black Flag (1979-86) is the greatest band ever if you understand the extent of Greg and 80s Henry’s idiocy. Greg is more pretentious and self obsessed than pop stars who are 1000x more well known
I disagree I love all those records if your a fan you like them all the last album was recorded badly but still like it.
So you couldn't even talk about Everything Went Black LP with the first 3 singers, or Nervous Breakdown, the first HC record, or Jealous Again 12" EP with Ron tearing it up on vocals? You did half a job or is it a half ass job?
Pre-Rollins Black Flag > Rollins-era Black Flag
Hahahahah his poetry is gnarly, please do a reaction vid to it
Ps. Nice chair! It’s dope
best ever :)
I just like Kira ❤
Yes! Same
Re: Slip It Solo, Pat Smear referred to Ginn's guitar playing as "all the wrong notes" its a form a genius.
There’s an art to it. A natural art.
black flag was no one but greg everyone one else were his puppets if he didn't like you he'd get rid of you like he did with chuck and Henry was just the mascot of the band and btw I love In My Head I like it a lot more then Loose Nut and Id say Post Hardcore or whatever started with My War, the song Swinging Man is a perfect example black flag after damaged went metal and if you like metal chances are you might enjoy it more anyways awesome video just thought Id share my piece
You should use pyramids and comas
i just member ham radios got kinda illegal for some reason . i think they strtd playin music with no rights to em. and not payin for the frequency? they were illegal when i knew of em
What about ( TV party tonight) ? It was in the Repo Man soundtrack ( awesome sound track )
I remember H.A.M. radios. I'm an old fart, lol
🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞
Keith Morris era Black Flag was fun. Even TV Party with Rollins singing was fun, but he ruined the band.
Loose nut rules!!!
Ron Reyes did the artwork on What The album… not Ginn
anyone listen to black fag ? its punk band who covers black flag songs but in flamboyant way
Couldn’t agree more about the atrocious solos on some of these records, well basically all of the records. I can understand someone who doesn’t understand music theory or doesn’t have any sort of discerning ear for what’s intentional dissonance and what’s just auditory abortion. Greg Ginn only provides the latter, but still to this day people die on that hill of Ginn being some sort of prog genius, comparing him to John Coltrane? Riiiiiight.
They were never on my playlists.
when i was 18 (2006) i got a huge ass bars logo tatted on my underarm. to this day people go like "are those your ex-girlfriend's names under those big bars?" would not recommend. black flag was quite overblown, but my angsty, young self really loved those angry, somewhat negative feeling of just effing shit up just clicked. nowadays not that much anymore. but hell, it's part of me.
I agree with you on Rollins but TV Party was in inherently ‘fun’ song.
I'm so glad your saying this! As a kid getting into punk I never understood why people liked half the black flag catalog. I'd buy albums and just scratch my head and assume I "didn't get it" 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Because punk isn’t just playing what sounds like “punk”. That isn’t punk at all. Sounds evolving are what creates new genres. That’s how we got Post Hardcore, one of my favorite genres.
@punkinmyvitamins1 as a grown person I agree but I said when I was a kid. At 15 a lot of it is music first then it helps educate point of views
@@dellarae I see what you mean.
🖤🖤
Ok, I have to say you are such a cry baby. I only lasted 5 minutes. Such a dork.
Black Flag's apex was 1982- Damaged & t.v party 7"! If you take the best songs from My war, slip it in, loose nut & the 3 songs on In my head you'd have One decent l.p•
i do not want this guy reviewin my stuff. he will hurt me too much .
Well, Keit h Morris even at his most darkest hour is still a little fun. And an interview with Finn said they seemed like they w are not allowed to be fun at henryjoined. Agree 100% bout Family Man. Was unfortunately my second pick up by them when I was like 13 in 7th gr. I got first four years first life canged, a kid I knew said fm cool, he was now a former fan. And well, Mark ar m said side two of my ear and slip it in etc Was kinda litmus test for musicians and punk fans in general in Washington state in the mid 80's.If you didn't like it you a closed minded punk clone. Opinion s are lije. .. ... But My War, Green River etc I've been d own wit this rawk since I was 14
Henry rollins stand up. I SWEAR TO GOD HE NEVER SHUTS UP ABOUT BEING IN BLACK FLAG
@watson I just find Rollins to be interesting in a ironic way. Hes super masculine boasts confidence but wears his insecurities. Plays military characters in movies, dogs on the military but says we need to keep our defenses up in case of an attack hate’s conformity but has to say what is and isn’t punk rock its like dude what are you trying to say? I honestly think its anything to stay relevant because his years in a band went to his head
Family man was when they died.
I love these chronologies, I only made if halfway through kerplunk by Green Day. NOFX is the only band whose entire catalogue I listen to on a consistent basis.
Dude either your hater or get down on your knees in front of henry and do what you do best.
What have you done musically.what band did go for it with.
That's what I thought.
L cope
Everything after Damaged sucks. In fact Damage isn't even their best stuff and Henry wasn't their best singer. I'd take the Ron era every day of the week. Jealous Again plus the cuts from Everything Went Black, is all I need. Dez and Keith are good too.
You could do a whole series of videos shitting on Henry Rollins. He is no fun.
Lol this is my 3rd or 4th Henry vid and I feel I've barely scratched the surface
1976-1986 is not 4 or 5 yrs dude.. kniow your BF history.
I couldn't watch past 4 minutes. This boy needs to smoke some weed and stop saying "HAM RADIO".
dont compare them to andrew tate 🥲
I’ve seen them a few times but they were known as flag. Meh.
Saw them live tonight. If Greg Ginn is in the band, and says it’s Black Flag, it’s Black Flag
Damaged is bland
Fear is and still way better than BF.
Man... you don't know what you are talking about.
Man has no idea what he's talking about
Just wasted about 15 minutes of my life
