Kenny Barron "Calypso" @Jazz_in_Marciac 2019

Hier soir Kenny Barron, pianiste au swing très souple et à l’invention mélodique permanente, a pu donner toute sa mesure en compagnie de ces deux grands que sont le contrebassiste Kiyoshi Kitagawa et le batteur Jonathan Blake. Sur un répertoire de très beaux thèmes admirablement choisis, le pianiste est sur un nuage, transcendé par ses partenaires. Le tout donne une performance élégante de haut niveau. Précision dans l’exécution instrumentale, homogénéité, comparses embarqués dans l’élan d’une certaine fougue, le trio tourne rond quelque soit le thème. Evidemment, le public répond !

I wonder what influenced Mr. Baron to perform this type of music? In Trinidad, my home land, there is a genre of Jazz called calypso-jazz. This demonstration of how it is played is unbelievable. Must know something about the Island. Maybe he has family connections here in Trinidad.
You would have heard Andy Narrell play lots of it using the pan instrument which is the national instrument of Trinidad. Etienne Charles, famous jazz trumpeter, who also hails from Trinidad also plays Calypso-Jazz. I feel like this is a tribute to our musicians to have Kenny Baron play our style of jazz music.
I remember him hooking up with Stanley Clarke Art Farmer and Hubert Laws to produce great music somewhere in the late seventies to early eighties on an album called aromatic I think it was.

The drummer and Bassist are also great musicians.
