Hey guys! I just thought I should add that this is just what I carry for short trips and local rides. The tool roll would get a bit more comprehensive for an extended trip but these tools will typically get me back home :) Cheers!
Nice kit, similar to mine. A tip, cut a piece of metal window screen and wrap it around the tube of JB weld, it can be handy for patching holes. another thing I have found very useful is to have a small tarp to sit on and keep things out of the dirt when I am working on things.
Had my KLR a month. Dumped the bike on the trail. Found out my positive battery terminal came loose. The OEM kit saved my ass and got me home. However, I realized very quickly I needed to build a kit. Thanks for the video!

I think you have a very impressive tool kit. On my bike I carry, in addition to my other tools, a compressor, which can run off the bike’s battery, a valve tool and tire goo. I’ve been a lot of places where I wouldn’t want to have to use a patch kit.
Awesome! On my 24,000 mile trip , I carry almost the same however I also brought a small tube of 5 minute epoxy, small sheets of sandpaper, a chain breaker and spare master link. I also needed a T27 (I think) to take apart my lexx exhaust to repack it. I brought a spare clutch cable that I zip tied along the existing one in case it breaks too
Add a few feet of stainless steel safety wire. As good as zip ties but different. I have used it to get me out when my master link fell off, wired up a broken skid plate etc.
thanks for the video, like to see what people carry, with over 50 years of riding I have only been left on the side of the rode twice, once on a Harley with a broken belt, ( 2 days after my service at a Harley dealer ) and once on my Royal Enfield 500 where I blew a rear tire, doing 110 on the 400 highway and there was not much left of it by the time I came to a stop. I am glad I had CAA Plus a free ride home. Hoping to add a 2022 KLR 650 to my stable soon. PS I have ridden over 50 Km in one year, so feel very lucky, only 2 times.
If I ever break down somewhere, I'm calling YOU lol. (Shines flashlight in the sky with light beam shaped like KLR) Btw, those aren't just any channel locks, those are KNIPEX!!! Best pliers on the face of the earth..... ;)))
If you use baking soda with the CA glue (krazy glue), it hardens like hard plastic and can fill holes or act as "bridging material" to add surface area, it also cures the glue instantly.
I searched this out looking for a more organized consolidated kit. I currently carry an Allen set that’s T-handle and a small 1/4 inch ratchet set as well as the factory gen2 KLR set. I need to add a few things and a bag to organize them. Thanks for the video!
Great points. I just did the break in maintenance on my 18 DR650 and tried to use only the tools in the OEM tool pouch. Discovered I needed to add a tire pressure gauge, two sockets with a small ratchet, and a small grease tube. The tire irons I hadn't even thought of! Doh! Glad you mentioned that. I'm pretty new to dual sporting/adv riding so I'm definitely soaking up all the tips I can.
For a basic tool kit, it's pretty good. Pretty similar to what I always carry on my bike. You should add 3ft or so of 20-24 gauge wire. It can get you out of trouble if anything electric decides to go short circuit or melts on a hot part.
I've been piecing together a tool kit to keep with the bike, but every time I see a "my tool kit" video...the list gets bigger! Thanks for sharing! Now I need to do another inventory! BTW-be careful standing under that tripod!
Mason I've only recently started watching your videos and I have to say I would agree with some of the comments, your videos are fantastic. I've been interested in purchasing a KLR 650 but I haven't made the plunge. I currently ride a Road King but where I live in Alaska it takes an additional month maybe 1 1/2 months before the roads are fully thawed out and dried up before I will ever think about pulling her out to ride. That said, I really do love riding motorcycles and getting a KLR 650 would allow me to ride a little bit sooner in the spring while breakup is taking place and a little bit longer in the fall when the snow starts to fly. I will definitely keep watching and thanks for the content. Keep the videos coming

This reminded me of my SL-90 out on the thawing lake ice in Minnesota in the late winter/early spring: all the snow had turned to water, keeping your boots on the ice you could spin like a top! 50+ years later, I don't even like riding in the rain!
Very good tool kit and it make a great check off list for anyone putting a kit together. I know you have gloves in there but I would also add a small tube of hand cleaner and small tube of soap.

You should go with a mini T-handle instead of the ratchet. Ditch the shift lever, you can replace the channel locks with mini vise grips which also works for a shift lever in a pinch and can replace your side cuts. Paracord? You skydiving? A pound of savings is worth an extra hour of energy. In all my years of racing and riding I have never broken a lever...wrap handgaurds. A little 14ga wire for those electrical problems, pinched and pulled wires.
All good tips! The shift lever is there for the week-long trips. vice grips will get you home but it's a pain for a week and the Paracord is for hanging our food in bear country. The tool kit is constantly undergoing upgrades and your right about the pound savings! well worth spending time on 👍 Cheers!
What about spare fuses, light bulbs, and some crimp connectors? I seem to recall watching a vid where someone needed a headlight bulb. Not pointing any fingers or anything.... ;^) Keep it up Mason! The Mrs. and I look forward to your weekly updates.

Anthoer great vlog as always I too carry my factory tool kit all the time but when I go out of town I’ll carry a tire pump electric 12volt and my 18 volt impact if I need to take. Off the tires as well as tire plugs and a few more items

Oh I know! Yeah its tough to capture everything smoothly some times and even though the sony image stabilization is amazing it cant compensate for all of the motion. On some vids I have upwards of 10 hours editing that stuff, talk about seasick! Lol. Cheers man.
haha as I sit here half asleep drinking my coffee, I thought to mention what about a couple of the cotter pins that go in the rear axle on the "crown nut" I believe it's called. I had to replace mine due to just metal stress. Small bag of 10 at the hardware store for a couple bucks!
Yes! I have switched mine to a hitch pin clip and it is safety wired to the swingarm so I won't lose it but that's a great call and something I used to carry.
depending on how far from help you are travelling maybe add 3 or 4 spokes, and I always have one of those mini torch lighters to heat a stuck bolt. Also a chain tool to cut a damaged section, a master link or 3 lol and a small section of donor chain in the size you have ; )

I’ve never broken a chain or seen a chain break. If your chain is bad enough that it could break then that is a maintenance issue and should have been replaced.
Good vid mate and have to agree with you about working on the bike with just bike tools and adding what you need as you find out whats needed :) i replaced all my allen key bolts with bolts in the sizes that i carry as i would lose the small allen keys :( keep them vids a coming :) ride safe and have fum mate ;)
That was a great video, just discovered your YT tonight. Love your toolkit, i also carry a small bicycle pump to inflate my tires after a repair, or if need be after deflating for offroading and back to hard road. Ride safe 🤘

Haha, Time for an update soon. I now use the Mosko Moto Pinner tool roll and have the Eagle Mike quick jack too. Otherwise just small changes and upgrades but the same idea. Cheers

I have replaced it with the Happy Trails jack now but the one I made was just 2 pieces of threaded rod with a nut welded to a washer for the base and a nut welded to a rod for the bike end. The down side is it wasn't adjustable. Cheers.
Hi Mason. You mentioned a "jack lift" which you use together with your side stand, to lift your wheels off the ground. Can you give me more info on this plse?
It's 2 pieces of threaded rod that thread together and allow me to prop the bike up under the skid plate using the side stand and one tire as pivot points. I can hold the front or rear tire off the ground with it. Cheers!
Hey Geoff, No wind noise that I have noticed and it doesn't seem to catch on stuff but I think the bare crash bars would be at as much risk of snagging so I don't think its any worse. Yeah, that's one tough little rachet, let me tell ya :) Cheers!
That might seem funny to someone in a warm climate, right after they finished a ride. But to those of us who are starting to get a serious eye twitch and are spending more and more time in their garages with their KLRs, mumbling to themselves that summer will eventually come and the trails will eventually thaw, it's like rubbing road salt in the wound. That is, if there is any salt left because the city is still putting it in the road.
Scratch Babble touché. Maybe a little bit of extra snow isn't so bad. 😉 Although, Mason might disagree since it looks like he is still getting dumped on.
I do have the tools that came with the bike + some allankeys and a tyre rapair set for tubless tyres. Good to have incase of a flat tyre. Started riding?
Yes I have a small electric pump I carry and I have never seen a reason for the fork brace personally. I'm fairly hard on my klr and it's fine without. Cheers!

I bought the TechSpec sheets and cut them myself to protect the rear plastic under my R80 bags and had some left over to make a couple for the tank www.twistedthrottle.ca/techspec-gripster-sport-gen-sheets-2-at-7-25-x-13-0-center-tank-protector

Don't you have hand protectors? If so how wold you brake a lever? Have you or anyone you know ever needed a shifter? Id carry vise grips and wire. Not new to off road but knew to my klr
Yes I do but the levers hang a bit below the protectors and I have seen them bend. We have bent shifters on the trail but no, I haven't seen one break in person. I do carry vise grips and wire. Enjoy your new ride :) Cheers!
IDK how they are now, but the older stock KLR shifters were super weak and non-folding. There's basically a tack weld holding it together. I broke mine off upshifting on the road, nothing aggressive, just went to 3rd and it popped off at the weld. I run an IMS heavy duty shifter with the folding peg now and i've never had a problem even though i beat the hell out of it. I still carry the crappy stock one on long rides after welding it properly but i've never needed it as my IMS just folds when i drop it on that side.
I see you have handguards on your bike so the chances I would think of breaking a lever would be pretty small. Do you agree and therefore carrying in a kit extra levers doesn’t seem necessary?
Yeah I totally agree Cliff, the chances are really slim but if you have ever tried to get out of a trail without a clutch lever you may find that it is worth having one with you. They are lightweight and the peace of mind is worth it in my opinion. I also carry a spare clutch cable ;)
Sorry, Cliff, I should have shown it. It's really a simple prop. Two pieces of threaded rod with a threaded sleeve to attach them together and I can prop it under the front of the skid plate to remove the front tire or under the foot peg to remove the rear.
No Torque wrench? Just wondering how often you find you have to adjust your chain. I check mine before, during and after every ride and have adjusted it once in 8200 kms.
No torque wrench. I would throw a small one in if i was headed out for a very long trip but i dont think its worth the weight for local riding. Like you i just keep an eye on the chain and adjust it when it needs it or when I swap tires. Cheers!
Tighten by hand torque when you get home. A torque wrench for a motorcycle tool kit is overkill in my opinion. Unless you were joking in that case haha
picking up my dr650 this week I'm going to have to ask to get you to show me how to do tube changes I've never had a tubed tire except on a bicycle and never had to change one lol

All great additions :) I have a spare clutch cable also because that can be a trip ender for sure! Cheers :)

Went riding the other day and realized my tool tube had a rag and random zip ties and a couple bolts in it. Gotta shore that up for sure!

I carry a vise grip, not a channel lock, so I don't need a spare shifter lever. I have ridden 70 miles with a vise grip as my shifter.

I have replaced it with the Happy Trails jack now but the one I made was just 2 pieces of threaded rod with a nut welded to a washer for the base and a nut welded to a rod for the bike end. The down side is it wasn't adjustable. Cheers.

Hi Mason. You mentioned a "jack lift" which you use together with your side stand, to lift your wheels off the ground.

It's 2 pieces of threaded rod that thread together and allow me to prop the bike up under the skid plate using the side stand and one tire as pivot points. I can hold the front or rear tire off the ground with it. Cheers!

That little ratchet with driver handle is slick too.
I haven’t seen him snag anything yet, mind you we haven’t done much singletrack as for windnoise I’ve ridden his bike and I never noticed any.

Hey Geoff, No wind noise that I have noticed and it doesn't seem to catch on stuff but I think the bare crash bars would be at as much risk of snagging so I don't think its any worse. Yeah, that's one tough little rachet, let me tell ya :) Cheers!

I have spare tubes, jack and spoons in a fender bag on the crash bars. It has been put to the test a couple times ;) Cheers David.

That might seem funny to someone in a warm climate, right after they finished a ride. But to those of us who are starting to get a serious eye twitch and are spending more and more time in their garages with their KLRs, mumbling to themselves that summer will eventually come and the trails will eventually thaw, it's like rubbing road salt in the wound. That is, if there is any salt left because the city is still putting it in the road.

I do have the tools that came with the bike + some allankeys and a tyre rapair set for tubless tyres. Good to have incase of a flat tyre.

Yes I have a small electric pump I carry and I have never seen a reason for the fork brace personally. I'm fairly hard on my klr and it's fine without. Cheers!

Yes, I carry a plug in 12 volt. It was a hand pump until I had my first flat lol. Not going through that again! ;)

When you're on the road and have to adjust your chain, do you re-torque the rear axle nut by feel, without a Torque wrench?
Yes I do. I try to torque everything I do in the shop but just cinch it down tight on the trail and re-torque when I get home.

IDK how they are now, but the older stock KLR shifters were super weak and non-folding. There's basically a tack weld holding it together. I broke mine off upshifting on the road, nothing aggressive, just went to 3rd and it popped off at the weld.
I run an IMS heavy duty shifter with the folding peg now and i've never had a problem even though i beat the hell out of it. I still carry the crappy stock one on long rides after welding it properly but i've never needed it as my IMS just folds when i drop it on that side.
I see you have handguards on your bike so the chances I would think of breaking a lever would be pretty small. Do you agree and therefore carrying in a kit extra levers doesn’t seem necessary?
Yeah I totally agree Cliff, the chances are really slim but if you have ever tried to get out of a trail without a clutch lever you may find that it is worth having one with you. They are lightweight and the peace of mind is worth it in my opinion. I also carry a spare clutch cable ;)
Don’t the warp 9 lever fold too if they get bent the wrong way?
Yes, they will spring straight out but not up or down.

Sorry, Cliff, I should have shown it. It's really a simple prop. Two pieces of threaded rod with a threaded sleeve to attach them together and I can prop it under the front of the skid plate to remove the front tire or under the foot peg to remove the rear.

No Torque wrench? Just wondering how often you find you have to adjust your chain. I check mine before, during and after every ride and have adjusted it once in 8200 kms.
No torque wrench. I would throw a small one in if i was headed out for a very long trip but i dont think its worth the weight for local riding. Like you i just keep an eye on the chain and adjust it when it needs it or when I swap tires. Cheers!
Tighten by hand torque when you get home. A torque wrench for a motorcycle tool kit is overkill in my opinion. Unless you were joking in that case haha
