A cardiac physical exam evaluates the heart, lungs, and peripheral circulation. The nurse inspects the chest for symmetry, movement, deformities, and scars. Auscultation involves listening to heart sounds at various locations to identify any extra sounds indicating dysfunction. The nurse palpates the point of maximal impulse, precordium for heaves, and the peripheral pulses to assess circulation.
