  • I was nearly ready to relaunch my own boat when I got an urgent message, this boat needs to be delivered to Australia! It was somewhat urgent because the boat had already been in New Zealand too long and if it didn't go soon it would need to be imported (and pay the import duty, which would be tens of thousands)
When I got there I discovered there were a few loose ends to tidy up, but I could see a very good weather window was just around the corner!

Good one Dominic. Your No8 wire ability has served you well again. Cheers Grant.

You're a damn genius Dominic. Making whisker poles and sailing random boats while filming it all is very impressive. Thanks.

How do you learn how to do this?

I took the royal port nicholson learn to sail course (wellington, in 2004. This course still is still operating and covers the essentials (except anchoring!)) then I brought a small boat and started sailing. I also read a lot of sailing books. Back then, there was nearly no sailing info on the internet. I think youtube is great to learn about boat building/repairs but books are better for sailing like this, because it's about how to handle when something goes wrong. That's really hard to film but easy to describe in a book! My one rule is that the next trip can't be more than double the length of the previous biggest trip. So, yeah, so I slowly built up from crossing the harbour to crossing the tasman.

It doesn't necessarily need to take 20 years but more importantly it doesn't matter. The adventure is _inversely_ proportional to the boat and your experience.
