It’s common courtesy and respect not just for royalty. It’s how we used to (and some still do) treat our elders. Now, as a 73 year old, I’m appalled at how many times I’ve heard young people using foul language in public, not hold doors for others and be just plain rude. Manners and respect for others are severely lacking. It’s one of the many wonderful traits of Katherine & William I admire the most.
Princess Catherine is a amazing student of Royal Protocol to the family she joined upon her marriage to Prince William. She was also taught by the late Queen, as she will one day be Queen in her own right. She is a huge asset to the Monarchy, Bravo Princess! Catherine

While it is called Royal protocol in the UK, in the southern US states we call it common courtesy. After all, Princess Ann is older than Kate. So, why wouldn't she give place to her. Here in Florida, I would have given the same respect to any lady, who was senior to me, even if she was a stranger.

The PoW would only cede precedence to HM the Queen (consort). Why else have established precedence if not to guide such public situations (much like an older senior sergeant will rise when a wet-eared junior lieutenant enters the room)?
