While I really like your content, I think you are a bit off the mark here. Ricky's mother passed away while in Minnesota, they were very close and he never really recovered from that. Actually you can see his body language in the court completely changed before and after, from being a cheerful folk, to always calm and settled, not showing emotions (never too high never too low was his motto). He blamed himself for being so far from home and unable to do anything for her. Besides that, Ricky is a well-read very smart man, family-focused, who has many interests outside basketball, and that is where I agree with you that the NBA was not his kind circus... . We all hope he does better and would love to see him on the court again for our national team or anywhere, but that is not as important as he becoming healthy soon again. Keep up the good work
I always thought, it was a pity seeing Ricky play in the NBA. He was such a spectacular player in the FIBA youth championship. He was not only but still most definitely fancy! You could feel the fun he had playing basketball. That never translated to the States, i'd say.
@akephalie that fun hardly translated to the Euroleague either when he was with Barca. He had all the tools but his shooting limited him. Once he figured that out he was already slower and less explosive after a freak ACL injury early in his NBA career.
The guy had an immense career. He won everything in FIBA and in the NBA had a really solid career. In Utah he was a top 10 point guard, in the Suns he did an amazing job. The dude went through 2 devastating injuries and bounced back. A truly gentleman in and out of the court. Top 10 passer in NBA history.

Very well put! You barely see such selfless players who put others above themselves. Ricky was that player and that's exactly why you'll hear every single player he's played with rave about him. All of KAT, Donovan Mitchell, Garland, Ant, Booker hold him to such high regards. Even KG once said how fun and refreshing it was for him to play with Ricky
Don’t forget he’s been not doing great mentally since his mom died in 2016. This isn’t a dig at him, losing a parent, specially one who wasn’t even 60y/o, can be rough towards one mental state.

@@BasketNews_com specially a close family member that lives in a country like 12 hours on a plane-away. There are people who have family in other states or others cities, but I can’t imagine how tough it’d be for them to be over an ocean away.
I almost lost my mom and that fucked me up at the time. Especially as a guy it gets tough. My sister got asked if she was okay. I was told to stay strong. Hopefully Ricky is gonna get the help he deserves now.

Ricky retiring is such a weird thing because it cameout of the blue. This guy grew up in front of our eyes and went from being this cheeky boy to becoming the man he is today. I am 34, and it feels like he is in basketball since forever. He is part of my basketball knowledge since I am 17, so half of my life. He was never a player I followed much, but to whom I became attached by just being always there. Him retiring is fucking sad. But Ricky did the right thing. I just read his article in the Players Tribune and it showed that he carries a lot of weight with him since his mother passed. All the best to you, Ricky.
Chacho Rodríguez, Víctor Claver, Rudy F., JC La Bomba Navarro, all went and returned quickly, try and test, maybe make some cash, all decided that less is more back home or in Europe. The longest tenure cruising through teams was Calderón, and he’s still there. Llull literary showed them the middle finger and said no chance, to become Mr Mandarinas and one of the greatest.
Ricky is tired of being an expendable asset, a pawn in a game he’s not leading or controlling. Asking yourself “why” might lead to no answer, hence loosing the mojo.

Congrats for your respectful comments. For me he’s the best Spanish point guard ever. He has been not only smart in play but also highly spectacular. It’s a pity what he is suffering but is kind of an illness exactly the same than any other. I hope a full recovery and I wish to see him again in a basketball court.
Europe legend! one of the greatest players in Europe, got lost in the NBA but it was awesome to see him every time in the Spain national team.
The thing with him, especially at Barcelona, was that it felt sometimes like he was a little insecure about his own game. That unfortunately came back after tearing his ACL and, on top of that, when his mother passed away. You could tell he wasn't enjoying basketball like he used to, unless he was with the national team, where he felt like home. That sums it up, he always missed his family and friends.

You should make a video on the player who is looking like the next great European NBA star, Isaiah Hartenstein.
Hartenstein is the son of a former German basketball player and was raised in Germany playing for many different youth teams as well as the German national team, even playing for German Men's National Team in EuroBasket 2017. He was drafted by the Rockets and bounced around the league learning from different players and even learned some of his passing skill from Jokic during his time on the nuggets.
Hartenstein finally landed on the knicks and it seems like he is poised to breakout into the next star. Ever since Mitchell Robinson got injured (15 games), Hartenstein is averaging 8.4 PPG/10.3 RPG/2.5 APG with 1.5 Steals and 1.8 Blocks a game. During that span, He is the only player in the entire NBA to be top 10 in both Steals and Blocks.
If you look at only the month of January, he is even better averaging 10.5 PPG/13.5 RPG/2.8 APG with 2.3 Steals and 3.0 Blocks a game!!! His Blocks and Steals per game numbers in January are BOTH 2nd in the NBA with the only other player even in the top 10 of both being Tyrese Hailburton.
His advanced stats for the whole season are also shockingly great as he is 2nd in the entire NBA in Offensive Rebound % and 1st in dEPM (Defensive Estimated Plus-Minus) one of the most well regarded defensive stats.
He has quickly become a fan favorite of Knicks fans who nicknamed him "Hartenstein's monster" or just "monster" which is a reference to the monster from Frankenstein.
I think you nailed it. He was at the top of his game after the 2019 WC, dominating every single game just to be traded 3 times. After 2 years enjoying some stability in Cleveland, the pressure to recover asap from his 2nd injury could be felt. In Spain we got the news that Cleveland was expecting Ricky to get to top shape with the national team in the last WC,... and he understandably declined. Why rush to fight for an NBA spot where you will probably get traded anyway? At 33 he surely has a lot of basketball left, but he probably will choose a step that makes sense for him personally.

I agree with your analysis. But if I am not mistaken Rubio mentioned publicly that one of the reasons for his mental health struggles was his mother dying after a long fight with cancer which lasted four years
Hey guys, I've been browsing through the comments and everyone pretty much said what was needed to be said. We all love Rubio, we expect him to recover fully and enjoy his life, doesn't have to be playing basketball, although we can only hope.

Don’t forget another detail beside his mothers passing… the guy debuted as pro at 14 years old with DKV Joventut in the Spanish ACB league… 14! He’s got almost a 20 year professional career at age 33.

Completely agree on the feeling of being a burnout in the league where most of the fans think that dunks are the pinnacle of the sport and the best arenas are those with best burger menus. Players like Rubio, that play for the team and romantic kind of basketball are just having side roles (unless you are Jokic or Doncic that are still not fully understood but can score 50+p 10+a 10+r ).
I recall interview with Serbian center Nenad Krstic who had a solid 8 y in NBA and decided to go back to Europe because he felt pointless in the NBA. He said you dont feel attached the fans the organization, etc. He said, that he has enough money and wants to play for own satisfaction.
The trades would affect anyone. It always seemed like he was just finding his feet, then boom, off to another team, another city. I think it would affect me. Hopefully he takes a break and then goes to play somewhere he can have fun. Because that's what it's about.
Spanish subscriber here. He es a legend and he has said many times that those trades were very annoying and desmotivate him. He was a very good player and he knew it, but he has been treated like the perfect trade pack. He just look comfortable playing for the national team this final 5-6 years. I think the trade from Suns to the wolves after putting his best year as far as individual performance and helping the team to the path of succes was hard for him, the suns even promised he would not be traded. That year after, in minesota, was awful, covid, the disfunctional wolves franchise, starting from the bench... and you could see how he didn't want to be there. Then he found his place in the cavs, and after an amazing individual performance again in the olimpics he took that cavs team from the bench and was one of the pillars of that team, amazing numbers every game, playing the important minutes and finishing most of those close score games like a starter, bc like JB Bickerstaff said, Ricky was a starter PG in any Nba team. But then He torn his acl again, in a game that he was road to the triple double. He has had probably his most difficult proffessional years while performing his best Basketball.

Apart from all of that, the main and most important factor, it was the illness and death of his mother, he was very attached to her, and taking into consideration how early he started being a pro, he never had the chance to be a normal kid. Maybe back in the time some mental health issues started and went worse with time. Only he know his suffering and I don't want to get more into this. I want to add that he is perceived in Spain as an extremely polite, humble, well-read and intelligent person. For the memories, apart from what he accomplished with Spanish NT, he had a solid NBA career, reaching his peak, in Utah, advancing some playoff rounds if I am not mistaken, and being one of the leaders of the team. And also later on, being a guide and example to a young and surprising Cleveland Cavaliers. Thanks for all these years Ricky. If he continues his career in Europe or not is sefondary by now. He has nothing to prove. Wish him all the best and to be able to recover.

I think another factor that greatly affected his mental health. Soon after he joined NBA, his mother got diagnosed with cancer and sadly passed away after a short period. It was devastating for him to be so far away from her during that time and he even considered to stop playing, but her mum didn't want him to stop his career.

I am from Spain and I am 3 years younger than Rubio. Luca's hype was not close to what Rubio meant. He made so many people fan of NBA. Come on, he was second pointgard in the BEST team that Spain has ever has. Un abrazo Ricky
good for Ricky, only difference LuKa keeps growing over competition, came to Spain a product, was low key disrespected in Spain as he will always be ours (Slovenian) and not yours, he came there and whipped through the classes till he was an adult (18) and best player in europe, now Jordan's career keeps aligning with his. There's like 50 times less people living in Slovenija. The NBA never embraced Rubio, neither do they Dončić, but he is inevitable like the meteor who whipped out the dinosaurs.
Many people pointed that out, but Ricky lost his mom in 2016. I think he became a father too since and didn't want to miss time with his family.
I have a feeling, and this is not reported anywhere and it's something that I have an intuition but can't prove, but I think the way he speaks about his mental health, he might have addiction problems. Maybe painkillers, maybe something else, but the way he said "his mind went into a dark place", it could explain something. Lot of athletes are addicted to legal/illegal drugs to cope with stress and all.
I kind of understand why he wants to give it up. Man has the money to live comfortable, and prob enough to look after the people closest to him and his children are sorted too. His Mental Health prob took a back seat for most of his career, so good on him for taking it seriously. Having said that I really hope he returns to europe for few years instead of outright retiring. Spain would love to have him back, Almost every euroleague team would want him on their roster, and he still is very skilled. his talent didn't come from being athletic or fast, so age is not that much of an issue imo.
I hate Rubio because of all the times he hurt us in Eurocups/WC/Olympics, but I love Ricky for all the amazing plays, all the skill, all the passion he displayed over the years, making watching him a true pleasure.
He's one of those guys for me that should've achieved so much more, but got unlucky in ways he couldn't control(Injuries, trades etc.).

These points that you mention are mainly related with basketball. In this case I think it might be something far from basketball or sport activity, according to his statement.

First of all, we are in no position to assume and like you said, only Ricky and those closest to him know the exact reason but I have a feeling it has something to do with his kid. He has stated before that he'd have wanted to be back home as his kid starts going to school - he wasn't going to uproot his kid every time he's traded so it would be back in Spain. In his initial hiatus announcement last August, he mentions that "Family matters the most now more than ever." He's also been very active with his Ricky Rubio Foundation during this time away from the game, a foundation that was inspired by the death of his mother due to cancer and dedicated to helping kids combat cancer and make the treating process easier. I think something bad happened man. I hope I'm wrong though and it's just burnout and him trying to find his place in the world.

A point-guard like Rubio would instantly make Partizan a top contender for the EL title. A single player, a true playmaker who doesn't need to score while making everyone around him better, for a period of just 3-4 months, would turn the league upside down, but only on that one particular team. With such a playmaker, Partizan would finish 2nd in the regular season, without him - probably won't even make the play-in, let alone play-off.
Just 2 points. First the team with he debuted is juventud de Badalona (not Barcelona). They're next to eachother but aren't the same city 😅 (It isn't something important anyway)

What are you talking about? The best players in the NBA came straight out of the university that is European school of hoops. The actual skill to maneuver a cerebral game is learned at the same continent that history, art, science, music, architecture, literature is studied at too. What are the odds, right? That knowledge seems to be so farfetched to apply for your typical running back or wide receiver that the women of the states represent much better in a sport full of quarterbacks like English football than the male counterparts. Let's act like the Yanks Media didn't try ruin the careers of Magic, Kareem, Isiah, Barkley, Akeem, Dikembe, Dražen, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Nowitzki, White Chocolate, Iverson, Kobe, Arenas, Ming, McGrady, Rose, Anthony, Howard, Lin, Harden, Kyrie, Westbrook, Rubio, Giannis, Boban, Jokić, Dončić just to name a few. Surely Europe basketball clubs have done worse for the players coming from the U.S.

I’m done with nba too. The game is ruined by no team play. EVen Jeremy Linn tired of the nba , feeling disappointed in treatment .
It´s sad what he is going through but let´s stop making a big deal out of it. At least he has the money to buy him self an appointment with a psychologist of his choice at any time. He´ll be fine, I´m sure about that.

Yeah the NBA landscape keeps getting owned by Europa so you never know, the way it's going now, he might come back one day as an owner. Like Luka, who while in his playing career already has the custody papers for Phoenix Sons and keys for the new Clippers arena. I think Ricky might acquire a franchise too.

Fuck the NBA. The players are treated like workhorses. A game once every two days, sometimes back-to-back... Just too much to bear. If I were in the shoes of a star European player, I would seek to get drafted by an NBA team, I would only want to play there 6 years or so and after getting enough money, would return to Europe. 🤣
