Just by adding the word "the" to "clap" changes the whole connotation of the meaning. The sexually transmitted disease Gonorrhoea, is also called "the clap". Whereas just having "Clap" as the title, invites the audience and the listener to clap along to Steve's virtuosity. Another great reaction, Justin! And I was glad that kitty could make an appearance! 😜🐈⬛
Starship Trooper is my favorite track on this album. You're in for a treat! Whenever I'm feeling a little bit down (like we all do on occasion) I just throw a Yes cd in the player. I begin to smile while I'm waiting for the tray to open!
I've always had an appreciation for Steve's work. Great piece of music.
Not only did he have e the chops, but his skill with elaborate compositions was on display here.

I was convinced there was two people playing , until I saw him do it live
back in the mid 70s during high school I had a buddy was a great guitar player even then, and I had him listen to this tune, and he never would believe that it was a single guitar player. It sounds complicated, but I learned it over 20 years ago, on a Martin 0018 Steve how signature no less! Most of it is chord shapes, using Travis picking, often slightly palm muting the bass strings.

Greatest show on earth
I think they call it plectrum (pick/strum). He would play fingers tyler while holding a pick with thumb and 1st finger. If you're not convinced of this guys genius by now, check out Steve Howe at Montreaux or Steve Howe and Les Paul. He fused all these styles into his work with Yes.
Thumping the guitar with the heel of his hand. Good players do it on purpose to get some percussion. For hacks like me, it's a bad habit.

"Clap" is played in Steve's solo spots to this day, and it's a sign of how excited Yes were to get him that after he'd only been in the band for a few months they gave the new guy a solo slot on the new album (plus I'm sure they were under time pressure and were happy to not have to come up with another group piece!)
I'm guessing the thumping is probably his left foot being picked up by a pretty hot microphone. This song is part of the live film "Yessongs', where you get a good look at Steve's weird clawhammer/fingerpicking style -- and a very active left leg!
Cool playing. Steve Howe is one of the most underrated guitarists out there. Could be his face for radio. But I digress.
I have to disagree. He won Guitar Player of the Year, 5 consecutive years, in Guitar Player Magazine.
eaperMan275 and Squire won bassist of the year 7 times. The two yrs Howe didn't win Squire said he should have won the guitarist of the year with his usual giggle

@@TheReaperMan275 I didn't know he won so many times. Thats great. When you see all these lists of top 50/30/20 (whatever number) greatest guitarists, you never see him on any of those lists. He should be.
