Instantly likable human being. Thanks for the post man
disparity in color is due to the temperature, the higher the heat, the darker your finished product will be. Generally chefs want it to be as light as possible. I've never tried bear before, but that crackling looks tasty.
To get the ideal light color turn your temp down and start with a light coating of oil on the bottom of the pan before putting the fat or lard in.
Thanks for the tips Clay! Harvested a beautiful fat blue berry boar in Alaska this year, and brought a huge ball of fat home from the trip can’t wait to get this in jars for the year. 👌🏼
Great idea. I didn't think of muzzleloading patch lube. That will make my Hawkins even more traditional
I interrupted watching Paul Harrell to get caught up on Bear Hunting magazine rendering down bear fat. Awesome topic. Thank you. After this video it's back to Paul Harrell. Thanks Jed for bringing Bear Hunting magazine to the Forefront of conservation.😁
Christopher Ch haha. Thanks for watching.
Thank you! This video is very informative and it helped me learn what I needed to learn. Very excited about the cracklings.
I started listening to your podcast. I like the history.
Thank you for sharing your passion
This guy is another reason to add to the Everest size pile of reasons i want to move to the USA. Cheers from Canada.
Thanks for the video that’s a good one. If you have a few bacculum use them for stir sticks when people
Come for coffee. It’s even better when nobody knows what they are until later.
That's a great idea, Daniel! Thanks for watching.
Lol, I’m a bear hunter and I have been to Hobby Lobby! They have great display cases for skulls and such....having said that it is not one of my hangouts!!
Lol I watched MeatEater a few days ago I juts wanna say your and stevens hunt hit the order button for a bow on Cabela's and my hunters license and bear tags thanks boys hopefully one day see ya out there at a staging area 🐻👍
Thanks for the awesome info
Dang it Jed, I now have to explain why I have a make bear hunting great again hat and bear hunting Magazine subscription coming in the mail to my wife. I will tell her Jed approved it. Can’t wait to read these hopefully I will learn some things to help me succeed in getting my first bear here in VA one of my life long goals.
Right on! Thanks and we'll let Jed know what you said....lol.
just did my bear fat from Ontario hunt. they eat a lot of blueberries there and are very good eating.
forest grump sounds great.
Enjoyed this video thank you
I think and wild game fat can be stored for long periods of time. Wild animals east in a wild environment thus consuming a great deal of antioxidants thus keeping it from going rancid. Not so for commercially raised animals.
Thanks for sharing. Do you have to store them in the fridge or are they ok just on the shelf?
Thanks for the info!
Baculum stir stick is the best idea ever.
California Outdoors got to keep everybody on their toes....
I was told if you want it more clear to render it on low on a oven. Woodstove makes it dark? 🤷♂️
So once its rendered. Its just like any oil than safe to leave at room temp? No refrigeration needed?
Ever made beat fat candles? I’m curious but haven’t seen much info on it
Im bald. Been bald since 2008. Hair club says the follicles on the top of my head are dead. Will your bear grease re grow my hair, and if so, what are the directions?
Dang Clay that's the bear-nasesity. Good lookin grease and cracklin's .
Allen Wilson thanks Allen...the cracklings were good for sure. You’d get far quick eating them.
It is usefull for hair right?
Does it bear fat has the same smell with pork fat? Is it good for hair regrows?
Once you have the fat rendered into oil and in jars, can you store the jars at room temp or does it need to be refrigerated?
I always use a grinder for the fat. It makes the crackles very small and enlarges the amount of oil.
The rendering itself should be done with the minimum of heat possible. This looked a bit too high to be honest ;-)
Can I freeze the fat to preserve the rest of the jars I haven’t use?
How long can you freeze the fat before rendering it?
I just got my first pair of new leather workboots. I would love to condition/weatherproof with bear grease and/or beeswax. Why is bear grease better than a purchased product?
Is it good for beard growth? Is it available from you?
Lots of good info, thank you. Both vid and comments. I scored ~ 10lbs of bear fat wish me luck : )
What' the brand of knife you're using to cut up the fat?
How can I buy it .could u ship it please
I bet Jed would love a little bear grease drizzled over his breakfast . Congrats on the bear you shot in the latest issue. Do you have to reload all the ammo for that Marlin or is there factory ammo available?
Chad Kampster thanks Chad. All that ammo for the .457 is handloaded. I think you can buy some from Wild West Guns though. My father-in-law is reloaded and be helped.
Cooked it too hot. It came out brown. Use a slow cooker with a bit of water and ladle it off the top. Nice white fat and it later separates into oil and grease at room temp. (posted from my wife's account, lol)
Great video I'm definitely looking forward to making some bear grease come October! Now Clay you've been doing some great work but I think I could speak for a lot of people when I say I think you need to do a trad bow Polar Bear hunt in the near future :D
kevin rodriguez I wish I could swing the 40K for it! Thanks for watching and good luck with your bear grease.
+Bear Hunting Magazine Oh Lord I didn't know it was that much.. Keep up the great videos!
I rendered my bear fat, and filtered it 2 times through cheese cloth, and I had a bunch of white stuff settled on the bottom, do you know what that it is and is that normal?
How many ounces of bear grease did you end up with from 12 lbs. of fat?
Superb bro
Thank you
Mission accomplished. I have some in my frindge now.

Funny you do this now, I just did mine also! Could you ask Jed if he sent my hat? lol...Thanks!
Guy Martin EN I’m sorry, but they messed up our back order & I still don’t have the hats! Jed is sorry!
So...rendering helps make it shelf stable? What would be the approx shelf life with this method by chance?
@bear hunting magazine
thanks again awesome
your dog is the star of this episode, no offense. First attempt at rendering , might have gotten the temps to high - should I have have a product without any smell? Can this be removed somehow?
Do yall sell bear grease?
I seem to be wanting pumpkin pie collard greens and bear steaks
Whats that intro music!? Its fire!
I received some bear fat from a neighbour. I tried to make oil but it turned out a little fishy. Any suggestions on why I can do with it? I tried to bake with it and... yuck.
This guy did it all wrong, no offence to him but this was a tutorial on what not to do. When rending fat you never want to heat it up to the point where the fat pieces start to fry and make crackling. Crackling is good but that's done after the first rendering. If you try it again, take your fat and cut it up into small pieces, smaller the better. Use a meat grinder if you got one. Now take all the fat and put it in a pot with a little water, not much. Then heat it slow and low, eventually it will start to look soupy with lots of gooey fat pieces still floating around, nothing should be frying or bubbling away. The fat pieces will still be white and soft floating around. Strain that through a super fine mesh or paper towel. That's your rendered fat, it should be clear and when cooled white as snow. Left over you'll have all the fat that will look like cooked instant oatmeal. If you want cracklings you can now take that and throw it in a pot by itself and slowly heat it up to frying temps stirring often, the rest of the fat will render out of that and the fat bits will fry and turn into cracklings. Scoop the cracklings out and throw that fat away or make some french fries. The point is when fat gets too hot it starts to break down and that's when you get those fishy flavors. Rendering your fat low and slow and not trying to get 100% of the fat rendered in your first go will give you way better product.
