'I am what you made me. [...] I am everything that you were too afraid to be!'
I am back with another Dorian Gray edit, this time about Dorian and Lord Henry (Harry). I have to say I enjoyed making this one even more than the previous one with Basil. I didn't mean to make it this long but once I started editing I couldn't stop. It edited itself at one point.
I also didn't struggle that much to find the song. I have edited it like 3 years ago (I am talking about the first one) and I really don't like to reuse them, but it's literally their song, so I had to. It's used in a lot of angsty videos, but I didn't use it just for that. I belive Oscar Wilde intended Harry to be the portrayel of the devil, manipulating and influencing Dorian. The second song is also not chosen randmly, because in the second part I wanted to focus on how Dorian became death (like actual death) and even Harry was scared of him once he realised how far Dorian took it.
Back to Dorian/Harry, I think their chemistry is unmatched (both in the book and movie) and I ship them just as much as I do Dorian/Basil, only for different reasons.
Half of their chemistry is alimented by Ben Barnes and Colin Firth, but only half. The infatuation Dorian has for Harry it's very solid in the book as well and you can see it in Oscar Wilde's introspections.
Let me drop some quotes: 'Dorian Gray stepped up on the dais, with the air of a young Greek martyr, and made little moue of discontent to Lord Henry, to whom he had rather taken a fancy. He was so unlike Basil. They made a delightful contrast. And he had such a beautiful voice' Mr. Wilde, I see you.
'Dorian Gray frowned and turned his head away. He could not help liking the tall, graceful young man who was standing by him. His romantic olive- coloured face and worn expression interested him. There was some thing in his low, languid voice that was absolutely fascinating. His cool, white, flower- like hands, even, had a curious charm. [..] But he felt afraid of him, and ashamed of being afraid. Why had it been left for a stranger to reveal him to himself? He had known Basil Hallward for months, but the friendship between them had never altered him.'
'Lord Henry rather liked him. At least he declared he did, and insisted on shaking him by the hand, and assuring him that he was proud to meet man who had discovered a real genius and gone bankrupt over a poet'
As for Harry...yeah, I doubt he saw Dorian like that. He was fascinated by him, yes but he saw Dorian like a subject of study and one he could toy with but that was it. He wanted to live through Dorian by trying to make him a mini version of himself.
Again, let me quote from O.Wilde: 'Certainly few people have ever interested him as much as Dorian Gray, and yet the lad's mad adoration of some one else caused him not the slightest pang of annoyance or jealousy. He was pleased by it. It made him a more interesting study'
If anything he knew the effect he had on Dorian and it amused him. I also think he knew how much it troubled Basil so he found amusement in that as well.
Anyway, I don't know why I wrote an argumented essay instead of a video description, but if you managed to read this far, congrats and I hope you enjoy! :D

Love this. This shows how evil Henry was. He was the villain for me not Dorian. Poor Dorian :(

Thank you! 💕💕 I'm really glad you liked it! I don't feel like Dorian was completely innocent either, but yes Henry is the true villain in this. Dorian is more of an anti-hero. A perfect example of one too.

That it very true. I always found it infuriating how Dorian hated Basil for being 'the reason of his shame', when Henry influenced him so much. That being said, I can't help but ship them, they are my Darklina of Dorian Gray if that makes sense :))

I don't think Dorian should necessarily be pitied, nor was Lord Henry completely to blame either. While Lord Henry is a complete ass, it was ultimately Dorian who chose to lack the consciousness and awareness to choose a better path. In the book, Dorian is clearly shown to be naive and overly trusting, but If he was unable to accept the cruelty behind Henrys words and go the less selfish route, while shifting the blame onto others, then it shows that his naivety isn't a completely valid excuse. However, I don't agree that, at the end of the day, Dorian is the villain of the story, infact, I wouldn't say that the blame of the story's events can be entirely shifted onto one person. Even Basil (I love Basil, don't get me wrong) had a part to play with his blindness and neglect to protect Dorian, who, although he still tends to lack a basic conscious, is at this point in the book, a lil naive cinnamon roll, from the advice and company of his friend, who Basil, in the beginning of the book, understood, and even stated more than once, to have toxic ideals. It is a very interesting story and can be interpreted multiple ways, but these are just some of the things that I have noticed about the characters :D

This song is such a perfect choice. Henry as the devil to Dorian’s angelic looks. Fresh for corruption. Your choice of voiceovers is always so spot-on! The way you capture the parallels is genius. Also I really like this colouring on this movie. Please edit this movie more!!!

Very good video. Your choice of songs is perfect. Thanks for bringing to light that the real villain of the movie was Henry. Your explanatory text is the reflection of my thoughts. You accentuate their bond by putting Henry's words in Dorian's mouth. Dorian Gray was so alone and in search of a model, a "father", that he let himself be taken in by Henry. If there was a painting of Henry, it would be even more "damaged" than the portrait of Dorian Gray, wouldn't it? Congratulations again and I hope to see more of your videos soon...

Once again, thank you for leaving such insightful comments, I really appreciate each one of them. 'If there was a painting of Henry, it would be even more "damaged" than the portrait of Dorian Gray,' YES, absolutely! But Henry was written as a coward that couldn't do what he preached, so he tried (and did) to transform Dorian intro a mini him instead.
I am planning to make a modern Dorian Gray video soon :D
