"I Vow to Thee, My Country" is a British hymn (patriotic song), created in 1921, when a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice was set to music by Gustav Holst.
The origin of the hymn's text is a poem by diplomat Sir Cecil Spring Rice, which he wrote in 1908 or 1912, entitled Urbs Dei ("The City of God") or The Two Fatherlands. The poem described how a Christian owes his loyalties to both his homeland and the heavenly kingdom.
In 1908, Spring Rice was posted to the British Embassy in Stockholm. In 1912, he was appointed as Ambassador to the United States of America, where he influenced the administration of Woodrow Wilson to abandon neutrality and join Britain in the war against Germany. After the United States entered the war, he was recalled to Britain. Shortly before his departure from the US in January 1918, he re-wrote and renamed Urbs Dei, significantly altering the first verse to concentrate on the themes of love and sacrifice rather than "the noise of battle" and "the thunder of her guns", creating a more sombre tone in view of the dreadful loss of life suffered in the Great War. The first verse in both versions invoke Britain (in the 1912 version anthropomorphised as Britannia with sword and shield, in the second version simply called "my country"), the second verse the Kingdom of Heaven.
According to Sir Cecil's granddaughter, the rewritten verse of 1918 was never intended to appear alongside the first verse of the original poem, but was replacing it; the original first verse is nevertheless sometimes known as the "rarely sung middle verse". The text of the original poem was sent by Spring Rice to William Jennings Bryan in a letter shortly before his death in February 1918.
The poem circulated privately for a few years, until it was set to music by Holst, to a tune he adapted from his Jupiter to fit the words of the poem. It was performed as a unison song with orchestra in the early 1920s, and it was finally published as a hymn in 1925/6 in the Songs of Praise hymnal (no. 188).

A hymn yes but nearly always associated with UK patriotism. The lyrics are from a poem, I suggest you look up who wrote that poem and why, then you will see it is very much about both heaven and an Earthly country.

I'm an American guy and I'm from Ogden, Utah, I really love the history of the English people including the culture which is very interesting to me and as an American who has English heritage I will be proud of that, My great-grandparents immigrated to America in the Virginia colony from Lanchashire and Essex, England around the 17th century between the 1600s and most of my English great-grandfathers were from the era of American revolutionary soldiers who fought as continental army and patriot troops in the American revolution against the British, in the American Civil War when some of my great-grandfathers fought on the northern side of the Union and some on the southern side of the Confederacy, most of the troops in the American Civil War at that time were of English descent, until its peak in World War 1 where there were more American soldiers who were then sent to Europe to fight against the German, 80% of 100% were probably of English descent on average and played a major role in the French Argonne Forest in the battle against German troops and the fourth from my great-grandfather, one of whom came from an English lineage original from Texas, Arkansas, Utah and Montana.

Yeldur i agree that our country has many things that must be worked on. I believe the NHS is failing due to our government purposely cutting their fundings so they can use it as a reason why privatising would be a better alternative (which will never happen) we have rich history, and currently we are a shadow of our former self, but i believe that we will better ourselves, we always have done in the past. After this pandemic, support for the NHS will be better than ever, and our politicians will help support the NHS (not because they are kind people but because they know the popularity will help them get re elected). I genuinely think that our country will drastically improve after this pandemic.

Then came September 1939 , and we were fitted for our gas masks which we carried in a cardboard box. But soon people started to knit covers and embroidered them. almost a fashion statement. We went through The rationing, oh for some chocolate!! We huddled in our homes when the bombers went over, and the houses shook when the bombs were dropped, my dad always seemed to know when it was one of ours (planes) or one of theirs. @@the0nlycmac To be honest the Entente ("Allied") cause in WWI was in no way valiant or good as it was in WWII. It was simply another war about some diplomatic issue in the balkans, that swiftly escalated into a war between major powers. If anything, the war was an accident, but inevitable. The Agadir Crisis nearly sparked WWI, earlier in the 1910's. Some may argue that a Central Powers victory would be better for world history. Hitler would likely remain docile, the Soviets would never rise to power as the Germans would swiftly intervene in the east. Mao wouldn't either, because there wouldn't be any Soviets to back him up.
The "Kaiserreich" scenario is unrealistic as well. So don't expect a WWII at all. Austria Hungary would likely become Hungarian dominated and would collapse in the later decades into similar countries we saw before WWII (no Yugoslavia, though). Ottomans would've collapsed no matter what. Germany, on the other hand, would end up forced to liberalize in the coming decades as Wilhelm II declines in health. In the 60's they will decolonize.

I hope that this will be sung for Queen Elizabeth as it was for Winston Churchill at his funeral. She embodied this song with her vow to devote her whole life, whether it be long or short, to the service of her country. As an American, I adore this song as it’s patriotism can be felt. Our politicians could learn a thing or two from reading and believing these lyrics.

The British will always have my deepest respect. My nation may have declared independence from Britain and fought two bloody wars with them but in time we eventually became the closest of friends. Our nations will also be forever linked to one another due to historical and cultural ties which also deepens the bond between our peoples. The United Kingdom is a great country that is filled with beautiful cities, a fascinating history, and most of all great people. May Britain last forever and may her dignity and glory be preserved for ages to come. May God bless you all from the United States. 🇺🇸 🇬🇧
