Black and white is classic so let’s learn to make the best black and white images that money can buy. There are a thousand different tutorials out there on black and white images, but this is the best one. I always think: "Ugh, I already know this!" But then you manage to mention something I don't know like the combination of a gradient map and channel mixer. It has the most pleasing contrast.

Ever use Nik Silver Efex Pro I have it but other than presets don't know much about it. Again great tut. thnx

+Blaine Conners I've played around with it, but wasn't really a fan. It was too far out of my normal Photoshop workflow to justify forcing it into place. I know a couple guys who love Nik products though!

What I would do is just turn it into black and white by desaturating it, and then tweak it with the Camera Raw filter, because I can access shadows and highlights, etc, so here a fifth way!!

+Skeleton Hammoudeh Dang! I could have included that here. Desaturating and using a Camera RAW filter (or just smart object in from a RAW image) can be a really cool way to make the black and white with a TON of control over your color channels.

+Gabriel Friedel Curves can be used to introduce more contrast or add more of a faded effect to the shadows/highlights, but not actually make the black and white conversion with Curves.
