Chicago during the ‘80s, under Solti, produced some of the greatest performances and recordings. Not only the mastery and finesse of Herseth, but the beauty of Clevenger on horn and the power of Friedman and Crisofali on Trombone, all held together with Arnold Jacobs on Tuba. It was the greatest brass section of all time!

Certainly awesome. I'll put in a bid for the LSO with Maurice Murphy, Dennis Wick, John Fletcher etc though as sharing that honour (sorry can't remember who was on Horn then.) Ok maybe Chicago win, by a whisker!

I learned all the Mahler Symphonies from the CSO in the first row of the upper balcony of Orchestra Hall in the late 60’s and into the 70’s with Solti, Giulini, Abaddo, et al. Solti’s tempi here are much slower than I recall. (Bud Herseth’s playing is exactly what I remember, since I’ve never heard anything like it since.)

Sir Georg and CSO, Mahler 5th. It can’t get better than that!

@@GLC-1979 Um, no. There was no attempt at gaslighting 🙄 Somebody commented (sarcastically) that they only heard audio signal in their left ear. I am listening right now with headphones and have output signal from left & right. If the right channel is truly missing, and it was mixed to mono from left channel source, both ears would still be enjoying the music as I am right now. So my original point stands-Instead of sarcastically complaining & trying to be clever, just try to appreciate the document in it’s imperfect form - we are all lucky to enjoy in *any* form.
