Annesley Hall and the Old Church Ruins
In this little explore we first take a look at the Old Church ruins near Annesley in Nottinghamshire. Situated on a mound beside the great Annesley Hall, this truly is a stunning peice of History.
After this look around inside , out & above, we take a look at the external parts of Annesley Hall & its accompnying Terrace Houses, all abandoned and damaged too.
With a stirring soundtrack & plenty of sky high shots.

Thanks for bringing back my childhood memories from when my family lived there before migrating to Australia in 1966. as a lad in the early 60's we were always chased off his land when looking for conkers, my late father and his brothers always told stories of being chased off by Squire Musters for poaching Rabbits on his land. Great video, I wish my late father was here he sure would have loved it and he would have had quite a few stories to tell, not to mention some Knowledge of it's history. I still have cousins who live locally at Annesley Woodhouse. Many thanks once again.

I was told by a work colleague many years ago, The ice house was relocated because it was in the way of the new road layout. Cracking Video.
Spent many a happy day exploring around there as a nipper in the 70s and early 80s trying not to be spotted by the security! Every time I drive by on the bypass from the Hucknall side it reminds me of my abiding dream of winning the lottery and bringing it back to it's former glory! Love this place - someone needs to sort it as my numbers never seem to come up! 🙂
I am sometimes asked what I would do if I ever came into a shedload of money. Well, I believe I would consider buying the hall and getting it fully restored but with tastefully upgraded modern facilities including heating. It is a most attractive building with bags of history. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Thank for sharing. It's a long time since I've seen round the opposite side of the building to the church and it's very sad how bad it now looks. I don't think it's been lived in since 1973 when I think it was sold by the last of the Chaworth Musters family. There were rumours that David Essex was going to buy it as he was in a play about Baron and had a bit of an obsession with him. I think he really wanted Newstead Abbey though. A few years ago local busker Wes Dolan was in a film called The Stone, some scenes were filmed inside the hall and it looked like it was pretty much gutted, I think this was 10 or 12 years ago.
My dad and grandad used to work here and lived in a a house about half a mile away from the hall towards the M1. It's appropriate it's filmed on a snowy day as my dad's abiding memory is shovelling snow off the roof (no H&S precautions back then). I will show this to my dad and see if he can answer some of the questions Ant posed. Today someone is starting to invest in the hall as the roof has been replaced (the new joists can be seen in the video), and I've heard from a couple of different sources that it is to be converted into a hotel. Although the part of the hall nearest the church isn't to be retained. The hotel idea isn't new and at one point the FA were interested in buying it for the England academy before they ended up locating at At George's Park
Awesome video!. Only just got round to seeing this. Love seeing old church ruins so would love to see more of this stuff! Norfolk and Suffolk has LOADS of church ruins. I would recommend Covehithe if you are in the area it is a must see. You can even climb one of the staircases. It's a very remote place. The beach there is absolutely stunning too with the broad in-between the sea and the beach.
When you go through the big wooden door in the church there is a deep hole in the wall to the left, it's apparently where they kept a large piece of wood so they could slide it out and use it as kinda bolt...apparently.
So gutted it's being turned into a spa, really wish it had been restored so the public could see it I all it's glory.

thanks Ant, i always wondered about the church, every car trip as a little kid i remember the derelict church tower which used to say goodbye and greet us on every trip out and back onto the motorway, it used to spark conversations for our family and i am sure many other families who observed as far back as we can remember, i was fearing the worst since the tower had disappeared from view but good to know the site is all listed and patiently waiting for its renaisance
nice video, i live locally to this site. Im sure i read somewhere that the ice house was dismantled and moved further into the woodland to allow for road building. it is one of four remaining in Nottinghamshire.
another interesting site near by is the site of the motte and bailey, perched on the top of a steep slope close to Diadem Hill and overlooking the old medieval forest road below.
I also read the story about the icehouse being relocated because of the building of the road Adam. Makes sense as it is a long way away from the hall.

Morning Ant The hall is haunted by the white lady she is said to walk the grounds only at night my book about it was written in 1987 by len moakes all about haunted Nottingham

Beautiful video, I live a stone's throw away from there but never been round it. I can remember the fire very well ,a fire engine missed the turning and tried to cut through the wood on the duel caridge way but he got stuck in the mud, the fire was raging by this time. If you carry on down the 608 towards the Badger Box pub ,on the right hand side you will see about 15 old cottages, these were leased out to workers on the estate by Colonel Muster.
Looking at the OS 25 Inch 1892-1914 map on the nls website, the mound is marked 'Icehouse', and the wood surrounding it is marked 'Icehouse Wood'.
I think it might be an Icehouse.
We walked our dog through the woods that surround it. We found a square pit, probably 6ft deep, maybe that was for storing ice? Would love to know what it was used for
@@elissariddin4952 The icehouse was originally where the road is now and from what I heard was moved brick by brick and now sits on the other side of the road from the house in the woods behind the hotel. I remember finding it some years ago while geocaching and it has steps down to it.
I've often caught a glimpse of this driving past to the M1 and wondered what was there so it's really exciting to finally see it! Great video

The cottages along the A611 between the Badger Box and Annesley Cutting were built for the staff of Annesley Hall. They are all private houses now but my sister owns one of them and it has big wooden beams in the ceilings and it's original wooden interior doors. They have a lot of character.

@@TrekkingExploration my nephew's wife grew up in one of them and she thought they were horrible because they were cold and draughty but with new double glazing in and proper insulation they're lovely. My sister has a lot of work done to bring hers up to modern standards and it's really cosy with the stove going in winter. The walls are so thick though it's really hard to get a phone signal inside too so it really is like stepping back in time

'so we will go no more a roving so still into the night' Byron must have spent many a romantic night in those grounds -also maybe with his dog Bosun as well who he wrote a great elegiac poem about too.
Worked on the church in the early eighties I put some of the cappings on the old stone walls we then started to excavate the old floor but prevented from going any further when the top of old lead sealed caskets were hit the architect who I think was from Codnor said they were probably plague victims the top of the caskets were large to accommodate multiple burials we had access to the old hall and it was still full of old possessions and furniture

You're in my neck of the woods now Ant! I enjoyed your railway videos in Gedling and Colwick where I grew up, and now I live up here. I've been to the church many times, and once sneaked around the grounds of the hall before I was stopped by a security guy with a rifle! He marched me off the premises! I had managed to find an open door into the hall before this point and just went inside. Wow. The feeling I was being watched, and not by the security guard was very strong. I can well believe it to be haunted. Another interesting thing I found in the hall grounds while trespassing (!) was the gravestone for a horse!

Interesting video. Coincidentally I drove between the three locations this week. It was the first time I had been back to Notts for over 3 years. Just past there I passed the Badger Box PH and realised this was the road we went on from Chilwell to Mansfield to see my Mum's family when I was a kid 60 years ago.

I googled Annesley Hall, Nottinghamshire and what a long complex history. Just wondering, has a inventory or a list been made of the headstones so those buried don't get lost to the past? Another great watch and love the drone work......
I think the records went to the new church
I believe that is the ice house belonging to the estate, it was removed to make way for the road widening scheme, it was removed brick by brick and rebuilt in its current location, I have a friend who was actually on the job and told me about it at the time I think it would have been around the end of the 90s?

Lovely old buildings. I wonder if a hotel would buy it up and repurpose it? Be a shame to see it crumble.
Agree it would be great to see it renovated but not an hotel. Can you imagine numerous weekends filled with common women on their hen parties dribbling their Prosecco through its hallways. 😱

It is the ice house but it isn’t in it’s original place it was moved there when they built the new A608 road
There is an aerial picture somewhere that shows the church before it was a ruin, the hall and surrounding areas are also in the photo. I can't find it now so if anyone has any ideas about this photo it might explain what some of the old walls were. Also, was the slate somewhere where they would write the hymns? Just a thought, no idea if it's right.

I would think that the "covered walkway would have been CLOISTERS and the building at the entrance to the graveyard possibly be the vergers house or the SEXTONS house each have a part to play in the running of the church.
If it's Grade ll listed someone must have to keep it to a certain level of repair??? Blimey, you'd take your life in your hands to get an ice cube for your gin and tonic😨👍🏻🍸
