So now that the AirPods Max are here there’s definitely a lot of hype around them. And I will admit the AirPods max do deliver when it comes to sound and active noise cancelation. But today we’re going to be coming them to both the Sennheiser PXC 550-II’s and Sennheiser Momentum 3’s. Now they’ll might not be as popular as lets say the Sony 1000XM4’s or Bose NC 700’s
but I really like both of these headphones but for very specific reasons.

Really enjoyed the comparison. I have the Momentum 2 wired and I like them a lot.
I prefer the convenience of the AirPods Pro for mobile use, and then I listen to my hifiman Ananda when I am at home and I am connected to my stereo. They are a huge step up from anything I’ve ever heard before.

Just got the PXC 550-IIs for $158 USD and I am wonderfully confident that I made the right choice. As of time of writing this (Sep 20, 2021) they are still on sale on Amazon and Sennheiser in the U.S. for $168 USD. Seriously, I have been absolutely astounded with them for the price I got them at. Still, either alternative can be an excellent choice as well.

After checking out the latest models from other brands (excluding Apple) up-to approx. USD500, particularly listening to them at the store, I went with PXC. Hands down best neutral/natural sound for me, plus bargain price which was not the indicator. As per micro-USB I got cables which are universal at both ends micro/Type-C, don't see any or problems there. Just wish it had quick charge, and couple more notches for volume when used wirelessly, as via wire+DAC they are loud - but not a deal breaker.
BTW, when i want party in my head - Momentum 3 Wireless. Gotta say I really like Sennheiser soundstage and signature.

Got me to buy the momentum 3's. Biggest shame is that these arent even on display at our local best buy... I was able to try the SONY XM4's and the BOSE 700 headphones. Right out of the gate the fit and feel on the SONY's is a magnitude better than BOSE... the build on the BOSE leaves alot to be desired for the 400$ pricetag (380 on sale in Canada). I was nearly about to pull the trigger on the SONY XM4's until I saw your reviews... and I purchased the momentum 3's without even trying them out... they were even 40$ cheaper (360$). Best decision I think ive ever made.. the use of USB C and analog audio ontop of the bluetooth capability was a huge sell for me. Build quality is in another dimension compared to the BOSE 700/SONY XM4. ANC is clearly better on the SONY but i think this is deceiving.. it gives the perception that the sound is better but in reality after trying the momentum 3's I noticed that SONY and BOSE have an extremely muddy and bloated sound with the BOSE edging out slightly in clarity. I think its extremely important to bring up the questionable practice with BOSE's app for the 700 and the fact that it requires access to the MIC at all times... This turned me off as a consumer. Sennheiser momentum 3 is by far the king of this segment and I have no doubt that they will last a long time.

Adjusting amount of noise cancelling is nothing like a good transparency/ambient mode (whilst listening to music at the same time), due to effect of passive noise cancellation.
I was really torn between two Sennheisers, and if PXC550ii had allowed you to use whilst in transparency mode, I definitely would have gone with them. Small feature for some, but was important for my use case, and led to me having to go with M3s, and their less breathability/more weight, worse ANC, worse performance for calls, slightly worse battery life, worse case.
Lol, sound quite negative so I should make it clear that I love my M3s but I think pxc550ii are a solid pair too, and were the only other pair I was seriously considering, with transparency mode being the dealbreaker.

This is the video we have been waiting for. THANK YOU.
Great video. It must be somewhat repetitive fo you top be making similar points about the different headphones. You are doing a great job comparing them in this way. Fantastic series of videos.
I have both the Sennheisers and without having listened to the Airpods MAx I understand what you are been saying.
I have heard many many headphones and believe the Sennheiser Momentum 3 to be one of the best, if not the very best, Bluetooth ANC headphone available right now.
The PXC 550-II (or in my case the EPOS Adapt 660) is no slouch either. They are crisp and clear and have good instrument separation (imaging), Especially for a pair of light, closed-back, ANC headphones.
The comfort thing is even more true and impacting than you stated.
Having both I have found that they become even more comfortable as times goes by.
I have fallen to sleep in bed with both and have used both on long trips on planes.
I wish the Momentum 3 had longer battery life but for what I use them for - they are fine.
Again thanks for the video - incredibly useful - especially when trying to assess what is a better headphone.
I am probably not the Airpods MAx defined market but I do like headphones and they are an important entry into that genre.
It would be great to see a comparison between the Bang and Olufsen H9 3rd Gen and the Bang and Olufsen H95. Just to see how they compare in the same way you have done here. The H95 is a real competitor to the Momentum in sound. It would also be good to see the comparison with the Airpods Max and the Bowers and Wilkins PX and PX7. Again there could be som specifics which really make this comparison very interesting.
I have only heard of one reviewer who has taken the time to compare the H95 and the H9 3rd Gen to the Airpods Max but they didn't go into any detail of what they found.
I own and love the H6 and their sound. It is from that foundation we get the B&O H9 and H95 sounds. They both carry much more bass but seem to retain the upper register clarity of the H6. As such I would very much like to know if the H95 is a better value purchase than the Airpods Max from a sound quality perspective.
Once again, well done and thanks for the excellent video.

@@paulshi5974 yeahh but overall As many reviews I’ve watched everywhere, Sennheisers have been chosen as the best, because they have the best soundstage and balance. They also have the best frequency response (6hz-22000Hz). Fyi, most of the competing headphones including bang&olufsen h95 have (20hz-20000hz) frequency response, and also sennheiser has 42mm driver whereas h95 has 40 mm drivers like AirPods max. So in specs wise as well as reviews, almost every reviewers voted sennheisers as the best. But yes sennheiser is truly focused on AUDIO QUALITY AND EXPERIENCE, I agree they’re not the most comfortable nor do they have the best ANC or battery life either...and as for H95s they’re way too much for what they give, 800$ is too much, let alone 300$ 😂 for that price range, I expect bang& olufsen to be way better and beat the sennheisers but they don’t. You just pay for the brand, just like people pay for iPhones. And also, neither too much bass nor too much highs/trebles are pleasant to our ears, well balanced sound is prefered by most people. And also, I prefer trebles more than bass, idk why almost everyone is obsessed with bass, I mean bass isn’t everything, bass is overrated 😂 like I think you know beats have way too much bass and thats why they sound trashy asf 😂

@@sayemak99 Of course bass isn't everything. It really depends on your music list. But a lot of the songs and music on my list sound more engaging when bass is brought out just a bit (doesn't have to reach the extent like on the Sony XB900Ns haha)
I'm really tempting to get a pair of Momentum 3s now. My main issues to overcome are the battery and the headband.
Headband, like I mentioned earlier, really likes to slide. It is already annoying to me when trying out in store. For the battery, I currently have a set of B&O H9i's, which have an advertised battery life of 30 hours - nearly double that of the Momentum 3's. But I listen to my H9i's wired with ANC off, so I pretty much never have to worry about battery life, and I only just top up before flights and trains. I don't know if I'm ready to really ditch a lot of battery life just yet haha

When it comes to sound quality, most mid to high end Sennheiser headphones will absolutely blow the Airpods Max out of the water. They are usually better in the comfort area as well. Being that they are an older headset, they may end up sounding worse by the nature of technological evolution. I don't think the 595s have noise cancelation, so the Airpods Max definitely beat them out in that category. If you're looking for noise cancelation and good sound quality without paying $550 USD or if you don't have any modern Apple products (In which case you will be exceptionally limited on the Airpods Max's functionality and updatability), I would definitely go with the Sennheiser PXC 550-II Wireless headset. Otherwise, stick with what you already have, the 595s are pretty dang great as is.

Um, wouldnt go that far. Noise cancellation is adequate, makes things feel further away, eg kids playing feel like they are in adjacent room, not same room, or neighbour mowing lawn next door sounds more like it is 3 back yards away rather than next door. Also it 'thins out' noises by removing low frequencies, so a passing petrol car sounds more like an electric car, removes lower frequencies of vacuuming/lawn mower etc.
Importantly, it doesnt distort music at all to my ear, and no associated cabin pressure when using anc max in noisy environment.
