ASCII art, animation and western RPGs are some of my passions. In 2014 I decided to combine all those into a single project and Stone Story RPG was born. I have been developing the game since. It launched on Steam's Early Access in 2019, winning many awards in venues such as Tokyo Game Show, IGF, TIGA and IndieCade.

Gameplay involves action combat, boss fights, loot gathering, deep crafting, a rich world with NPCs and Lore, an artificial intelligence that controls your main character, and even some scripting with the game's built-in language, Stonescript, if you are so inclined to automate the game's grinding elements. I understand not all gamers are coders, but this is inspired by MMO's where some players will write bots to automate progression. Studios generally frown upon this, but instead of thinking of this as cheating, I ask "what if this can be part of the game?". If all players have equal access to automation tools then it's fair.
I didn't expect the game to turn into an epic, but creative projects kind of have a mind of their own. The world design draws many inspirations from across pop-culture and games, such as Diablo, Mario, Dark Stalkers, India Jones (Temple of Doom), Prince of Persia 2, Candy Box, Dark Room, Clash Royale, Little Alchemy, Frog Fractions, Grim Fandango, Dota, Starcraft, D&D, Alien, Poetic Edda, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Magic: the Gathering, the X-men comics, Snow White (Disney), Slay the Spire, Dante's Inferno, Zelda: Link to the Past... those are just the ones I can consciously pick out.
Work continues! We march towards exiting Early Access, as well as porting the game to the Switch, Mobile and perhaps some other consoles. Before you ask, no, the game does not run in the terminal, unfortunately. It was built on top of the Unity engine, leveraging not only modern technology but game design principles as well. Every feature is carefully considered and balanced to maximize player engagement and fun. I am not opposed to scripted tutorials in games, but in Stone Story I demonstrate that they are not necessary. Games are great at teaching players how to play. Turns out, learning is fun, when structured correctly. Games-- are all about learning. - Hry
As somebody who's trying my absolute hardest to get into ascii art but can only find "text to ascii" things, this is absolutely a massive help.
Glad to help. If you want to share your creations and/or get constructive criticism join the Stone Story discord server
Same bro people are so lazy these days like just do it by hand
Finally found someone ELSE who does ASCII art like this. What a world
Are you in our Discord server?
I'm here cause I saw now the Stone story rpg game ad on steam and I was intrigued by ASCII art... and here this video is talking about that game 🤯
this video deserves more likes, great patient you have making both the game and the tutorial there.
Thank you so much for this. A huge tutorial! GRACIAS!
Your Art and process are still an inspiration, thanks for sharing the fruits of all the years of labor with us :)
You can share it in our Discord server when you have a playable / demo / prototype!
I'm gonna come back in 2 years when I'm ready to learn this :) dont delete this video
how is it going?
@@mistako101022 one year to go...

Por mais que seja um vídeo até que velho (2 anos atrás), ainda é de muita ajuda. Comecei a jogar tem uns 4 dias e tô viciado kkkk.
Awesome explanation.. thanks
Muchas gracias por el contenido! You're amazing!
It's awesome! You're crazy wizard! HOW?!! Unbelievable!
Years of practice! You just start doing it and slowly get better
Thank you for your work!! I really don't want ASCII-art be gone from this world.
I actualy start trying draw ascii-art something about year ago, and think I do it very well, but made only few picture and one extremely-easy gif, i'm stuck becase don't know what I want to draw...
You should share your creations in our discord server. We have a channel just for ascii art! Not knowing what to draw is something artists will struggle with forever. With ASCII, one thing you can do is just doodle different symbol combinations and ask yourself what do they begin to look like, then complete the picture. I've done that some times.
Added links in the video description to the old TigSource devlog and ascii tutorial page.
Love the ASCII animation! This is Mike from Zynga. I'm doing a bit of ASCII myself - for a big project. BTW great explainion of how the animation works. Also am doing some tests on an IBM Selectric typwriter.
Hey, if you want to catch up you can add me on Discord: standardcombo#3927
I'm making a game with ASCII art! This video is basically the reason. Thanks man.

Yea, sorry but I talk slow haha
@@GabrielSantosStandardCombo all good I've yet to watch but I can tell it's gonna be A1

Useful tip: Use character map for better detail but slight time consuming
im tired of seeing "image to ascii" generators when i try to look up tutorials for ascii art so i thank you
No problem. If you'd like to share your ASCII-art we'd love to see it in our Discord server: discord.gg/StoneStoryRPG there's a channel just for ASCII-art
What is that second tool's name, after rexpaint? I can't find it.

@@GabrielSantosStandardCombo Thanks man!
How, or more exactly, what software are you using to make this ASCII art? I want to make ASCII animations (Which will be time consuming as I plan to do it frame by frame and creating each individual frame myself), and art for fun! Plus I really liked your game, Stone Story and I think its really quite a spectacle of wonderful ideas!
I use Notepad++ for the art
The game engine is on top of Unity
@@GabrielSantosStandardCombo Ah thank you! You are really talented too! Keep on making these things, they are awesome!
You might check out a program called Durdraw, another ANSI editor which lets you do animation frame by frame, exactly as you describe.
@@indyztech Nice, thanks brother!
Can I animate an image I ran through an ASCII generator?
Blasphemy!
bruh i just want to draw a circle
