- For most of who have grown up on the hills that flank the river Teesta, she has been more than a collection of whirlpools and rapids. When friends and family who gathered to bid us farewell became tiny specks in the rear view mirror, the Teesta moved alongside all the way down to the plains. And when we returned, months or years later, she would be the first to welcome us home - gurgling, jumping and skipping like a young sibling who had missed us more than we missed her.
Sadly, unable to withstand the onslaught of progress of the recent years, the grand old lady isn’t what she used to be. More than half a dozen hydroelectric dams have reduced what was once a swift flowing Himalayan river into mere intervals of lifeless water bodies.
This song has been written in praise of the beauty she once was. Which our children may never ever see again.

The flow of the song starts slow and gradually increases just like the magnificient Teesta which starts it course from the humble Tso Lhamu as a small stream to a magnificient river with its crests and troughs.
The video truly epitomises the mighty Teesta and is also a humble tribute the river which is revered utmostly by people of the Hills .
Great cinematography and any song of Bipul chettri is a treat to our ears.

Darjeeling being my mother's hometown, every winter vacation, as a kid, would be visiting my grandparents. Everytime we'd pass the Teesta, I'd get excited because we were taught about it in school, so I thought it's famous and I get to pass through it, I felt as if I've achieved something great. Very nostalgic.

Recently visited Sikkim and way back home, stood in the Lovers Meet Viewpoint and watched Teesta and Rangit merge. When I read the song description I was on the verge of tears. Growing up I saw my grandma sitting by the window and watching Teesta in the evening, it was like her daily routine. Nowadays, she doesn't sit by the window, just lays in her bed. Maybe because of her old age or maybe because we can no more see the majestic beauty from our window as clearly as we could a few years back. This song reminded me of home and Teesta and my grandma too.

teesta river reminds me of our Gorkhali ancestors fighting with british and foreigners,cutting them with bare hands and sword and washing our Gorkhali sword fed with foreigners blood in the teesta river. when i say teesta river it always reminds us Nepali Gorkhalis about that same thing. teesta kaangada. Jay Gorkhas. Jay Mahakali Aayo Gorkhali.
While glories may be remembered, also remember the excesses of the Gorkhali ancestors on those who preceded them in the landscape - Lepchas, Kirantis, Sherpas, Kumaonis, Garhwalis and others. Subsuming other identities in the name of empire building and conducting bloodshed also has its price. Sometimes paid by the descendants who did not do those wrongs. British may have been foreigners, others decidedly weren't - it was the Gorkhali who were the foreigners doing the butchery.
History is written by the victors. That doesn't mean all actions are legitimate or morally correct. So we must always keep a balance. Just my two cents seeing the divisive politics and violence which often has engulfed this landscape for the past 30-40 years. Democratic and compromise and consensus building takes time and character - not everybody's strong suit.
