I recently purchased a vehicle from CarMax and a few days later found that the windshield washer pump was dead even though it passed their CarMax inspection. This prompted me to check the cabin filter and engine filter and both were extremely dirty but had passed inspection too. I suspected something shady was going on and checked my vehicle through CarFax and discovered it had a prior minor accident. CarMax said they did not know about it as it came clean in their auto check report. I believe CarMax checks the vehicles they buy through multiple car systems but only provide the auto check report to customers as it provides a superficial check and history. I returned the vehicle to CarMax and got my money back. The accident on the car’s history made it drop in value therefore making a fair deal on the car to a bad deal. Buyer beware.

We sold a 2018 CAMARO 2SS convertible with 2,000 miles on it just yesterday, July 7, 2021. We did our homework and we knew what the car was worth. We took the car to a couple dealerships before we went to Carmax. The car was like new, spotless. Carmax gave us $7,000 more than the dealerships were offering. Also, $4,000 more than Kelly Blue Book. VERY POSITIVE EXPERIENCE. We were not buying a car, just selling one. This experience really soured me on dealerships. Next time I want to purchase a car, I will go to Carmax first.

Good experience buying & selling- had the best price on my trade, but the purchase was probably 1K more than elsewhere… I figure that’s the convenience factor of taking care of all of it in one spot. They insisted on reimbursing me for a driver’s manual that was missing (found one online). No complaints.

Where I live, dealers, in very small print, advertise that they have a $999 fee for...whatever (extra profit?) AND a $200-$300 documentation fee for filing your registration paperwork for you. When you add that $1200-$1300 to the " bargain " price at a dealership, then CARMAX doesn't look so bad unless you had to have a car transferred a long distance.
Where CARMAX falls down, in my view, is in the instance where a car is more than 3 years old.
Deals can be had at CARMAX if you don't mind driving a low mileage car that is quite old and/or unpopular. And other deals occur when a manager at a CARMAX location " accidentally " undervalues a car that he is not aware of its true value (very rare occurance).

Paying "too much" also depends on your market. Local deals will be usually be cheaper, sure, but I'm in Michigan and am willing to pay over market if I can get a car from the south or California with an underbody or frame that hasn't been reduced to rust by winter road salt. All my local "deals" are Michigan or Wisconsin or Ohio cars---no thanks.

The Carmax, vehicle is $1000 less with 1000 less miles then same year everything vehicle down the street. The other vehicle had a white interior which is probably half the value of the higher price at the dealer. So Carmax, did better for a vehicle to vehicle. It’s a high-end vehicle so it has a 50,000 manufacturer warranty. The only thing I was a little unhappy about is the payoff for my leased car is few hundred under my pay off but I’m still trying to negotiate.

Good video, but some information is incorrect. Carmax guarantees they don’t sell cars with flood or frame damage in their vehicle history. And buyers are trained to determine these things when they walk cars prior to the auction. Carmax doesn’t sell cars “As is” every car came with a 30 day warranty and now it increased to 90 days and a 30 day return policy, unheard of in the auto industry. So if your power windows went out you would be covered for 90 days not to mention 5 years if you bought Maxcare

Most people don't know you can bring it to a dealership for the make and have them do a full diagnostic test if there's an issue you notice. Free of charge to you. People are just buying and listening to videos like this instead of advocating for themselves and researching fully. I'll buy every car from them

Previous work experience on the production side of CarMax, a lot of the higher cost comes from replacing a bunch of things during the process which often gets passed onto the customer to the point the car is no longer really worth the hassle. You would be surprised how many Sonatas and Elantras within newer year ranges needing a whole suspension system needing replaced to transmission oil pan leaks. That's just a idea though, obviously some makes and models are far worse and need more work then that.
Great and informative video but just a correction, CarMax doesn't have a location in Michigan other then the small tiny one in the Kalamazoo region. Suburban of Michigan is the CarMax alternative with in that area of the country.

I looked at a couple of cars at CarMax -- and I made sure to check the CarFax for "No Damage History" -- but 2 of the vehicles I looked at had fresh paint overspray that matched the body on the tires. You could even see the square pattern of the paper & tape that they tried to cover the wheels with. When I asked about one of the ones I was interested in -- the sales guy tried but couldn't bring it around because "the front bumper was still off". I asked the sales guy why these "no damage history" cars have fresh overspray & bumpers removed when and he said that the CarFax Damage History report just says there's no repair history -- but CarMax may be doing some to "bring it up to their standard". It makes me feel like they're a body shop with a sales floor -- that found a loophole in the CarFax reporting

Always look at the fine print at dealerships. There is the dealer fee, which many charge more that 700 for. If it is certified, they are adding fees. Then there is a few cleaning or processing fees. I dealer down on some before, but I depends when you buy. Don’t afraid to walk away. That being said, Dealt with a deal on a car and CarMax. CarMax was 2000 k more. With fees and a certified it finished up being closer to CarMax price bottom line, still cheaper, because I was going to purchase a warranty with CarMax. The small difference and the fact you can take the car anyway with CarMax warranty ( for my daughter and college long ways away, this made more since) we used CarMax. Can’t say my buying stress was better, because I still dealt with a dealer, but the car 3 years in has been great and two minor warranty uses and took it to the private auto shop and car max paid for it. Recommend, but would not write off dealers.

After watching this... There are a few flaws... Yes most of the pros were correct but when carmax purchases a vehicle wether from auction or private seller, if it doesn't pass the 125+ point inspection, that vehicle does not make it on the lot. Carmax prides itself on not selling vehicles with fram nor flood damage. All vehicles have a free experian history report available to view. Yes some cars are both rental and fleet but you can be assured that don't have flood/frame damage. Expect to have more miles on those as it should be obvious. Warranty wise, carmax still is able to provide the manufacturer warranty if it is still in the range. 30 day money back guarantee was just released late last year. 90 day or 4,000 mile warranty included in the price of the vehicle. Maxcare is an option that can cover the vehicle for up to 150k miles or 60 months on most vehicles.

Internet cars dealers like Carvana, Shift, etc. have forced Carmax's hand in the past year and made them much better. They now offer on-line buying, home delivery, no commitment shipping & test driving AND A 7 DAY refund period. Try getting that from any dealership. Best advice I can give is buy a car from them that's 1 or 2 years old with at least a couple years factory warranty left. Yes, you pay a little more through them but the car has already taken its biggest depreciation hit and you have until just before the factory warranty expiries to decide if you want to extend it.

An OEM certified can be great , especially from like Honda. Often better off then having bought a new Honda. But also many dealers avoid the good certified programs except for just a few cars, likely due to cost. Or multiple levels of "certified" of which most are not helpful. Given it seems Carmax actually honors the extra warrantees they sell, they have their own garage service, and also some other garages connected that reduce your deductible if used. It seems a huge plus for those buying slightly higher mileage cars if getting a warranty , . as opposed to all the shaft you warrantees that never pay. So those seeing a car outside the manufacturers original, look at price and total of a maxcare warranty. Or, as my local ford only has blue certified, only 90 days, and zero of the Gold certified which is what you want. You often can't get a good certified deal. Also, your story of the non working windows the second day costing you is somewhat bad as all carmax cars have 90 day / 4k mile warranty included, or you have 10 days to completely return vehicle for refund. Great video! people should compare all the costs of sales places and see what they can do near them, or when they need it.

Probably photos taken before car shipped for $299 up from NC (to hopefully avoid northern rust?) and then sitting in the East Meadow Long Island lot for a week? Carmax purchased off a rental fleet so was not expecting perfection but the stains on all the seats clearly indicate no "deep cleaning" was done by Carmax "reconditioning associates". Since no public photos are ever taken of the undercarriage checked for rust and discovered some on the underside of the low to ground muffler and tail pipe. I had a feeling, no way to prove it, but the before sale detailing is (in my view) where things can go wrong for any used car dealership. A detail person who doesn't know what they are doing, being in a hurry, and in general has let the standards slip.
I look at CARMAX's website quite often and am amazed when I see cars that look like they were detailed by Helen Keller. It's like folks have never considered using anything but water and a semi-clean rag. Yet, that isn't the norm, and I have occasionally seen the same thing at non-CARMAX dealerships.

Carmax is the shit. I bought a 2017 Infiniti G37 with only 23,000 miles than I got a 2017 Jaguar XE and carmax is the only used car dealership that gives your a insurance option of 50-100,000 miles that if anything under the hood goes out they will fix for a $50 dollar down payment . Comes in handy when getting luxury cars

I'm planning in financing a 2017 Jetta from carmax at $13k, mileage is -50k (35k if I remember). Is that a good deal?
