  • Ever wondered what would happen if Jimi Hendrix played like Guthrie Govan? Or guthrie Govan played like Jimi Hendrix?
This guitar lesson (more like a masterclass) showcases the incredible guitar skills of Guthrie Govan and his ability to step into almost any guitar style effortlessly. Watch as he breaks down classic Jimi Hendrix guitar techniques and habits in detail, showing you what we can learn from one of the greatest guitar players of all time - technically, two of them!

▶ Learn about tapping techniques: www.licklibrar...

Through this mini-masterclass in guitar technique, Govan demonstrates how Hendrix reinvented various aspects of the guitar, including rhythm and lead playing, and how guitarists can incorporate these techniques into their own playing style using the CAGED system and incorporating lead lines into our chords.
Watch as Govan shows us, mere guitar mortals, how Hendrix's rhythm playing was a source of fascination for guitarists everywhere, especially as it blurred the line between rhythm and lead. He highlights how Hendrix could play rhythm licks as part of his lead playing and vice versa, creating a fluid and organic sound that was completely unique to the 'Axis Bold As Love' guitarist. Govan also demonstrates how the CAGED system can be used to create Hendrix-style licks by breaking down the fretboard into different chunks and superimposing major pentatonic scale shapes over each section.
By breaking down Jimi Hendrix's guitar techniques step by step, Govan offers invaluable insights into how guitarists can improve their own playing and create a unique sound that draws on the legacy of Hendrix. Not to be missed if you want to learn more about Jimi Hendrix's technique!

Spot on. Hendrix's style was essentially playing rhythm guitar in a lead sort of manner. Those 2 & 3 note voicings or embellishments on major chord shapes became his signature sound. He was a soul player with a funky feel. Guthrie's example at 1:34 is a textbook page out of Jimi's book :)

Remember this about Jimi we only really had him for about 3 or 4 years. He had a pretty good body of work that still influences guitarists to this day. If he had lived whom knows what magic he had left in him to share. A lot of guitarists for years just concentrate on the playing only leaving the structure of a song to show their skills at playing. Jimi focused on performing his music, guitar and singing maybe doing some playing behind his head etc. There is a difference there and a lot more to concentrate on. Not to mention the beautiful songs he wrote as a whole not to just show off his jamming ability.

It all boils down to this really- hendrix was a brilliant musician and songwriter, a true creative genius. It blows my mind how he had no music theory, same with cats like Danny Gatton. Just awesome. Here's an interesting fact- JImi had synesthesia which means that when he heard sound and music he'd see colours aswell. So for us, a certain chord or progression might have been the colour blue for him

The best way to be a good guitarist is to be an accomplished bassist first.
Worked for me. You can learn this Hendrix style easily by always using the 3rd as your lowest note in a chord. It just stacks up after that.
Example: Play a power chord in D. Instead of D being the lowest note, make the lowest note an F# on the A string (4 frets up) from the D. You'll still hold down the rest of the notes in the D power chord, as usual. Now you can play games with the notes in the chord.

Listen to it carefully and you'll be grooving along.

@yatah That happens in studio recordings, especially with his tone. He sets it up for live shows, where the room is his reverb pedal. When fed directly into a recording, it sounds thin.

To many people are hung up on technical ability because of dudes like Guthrie, but i assure you, not having any knowledge of theory or any notes,ETC, i can hold my own with any guitar player out there, even with my muddy, choppy playing. It's the notes i choose, and how I use them that get's me good feed back from strangers, despite my obviously lack in some area's. Playing from your inner self is very powerful when people actually feel, and see you mean it, expressed threw your instrument.
