I’ve got to share this true story and I promise you it is true. I helped a fellow do some electrical work a while back and when we got back to his house I asked him if I could get some eggs from him to incubate. I think that he had locked himself out of his house and couldn’t get the eggs, but he would contact me later. Later on I got a text from him saying that he wasn’t sure that the eggs were fertilized, but he would put some back in the nest and see if the rooster would fertilize them. Absolutely true. I hope this lifts your spirits!

I hope you feel better quickly, Chuck! I'd suggest that you get you some Elderberry Syrup and take a shot of it each morning. Between the immune system booster that the elderberry provides and the natural goodness of raw honey, I've managed to avoid getting sick for a long, long time by taking a shot each morning.
I grow elderberries on my farm not too awful far from you (1/2 way between Roxboro and Oxford, NC). Let me know if you'd be interested in trying some elderberry syrup and I'll be happy to send you a kit.

My second run with the Cornish cross this year; processed 29 out of 34 starters. Averaged out with 9 pounds at 9 weeks. Amazing creatures 💕

Goodness! It sounds like you need to be resting and letting your helper do more. Here in Oklahoma we are all suffering with ridiculous allergies, so when we start to feel bad we don’t really know what it could be lol! We sure do love our white broilers from freedom Ranger! I’ve got 100 right now. Well, technically we received 102 and I still have 101.

I have 2 nosy questions about your cost/profits on chickens. What's the going market price (May 2024) you feel that you can consistently sell processed meat birds for your local farmer's market? Do you have a target margin ? With higher costs, at what point does it become not worth doing ? This is question for any small farm/homesteader out there.
Thanks, I understand if you don't want to disclose this kind of $$$ information. As a reference point in my area, Ohio, I see $8 whole chickens at Kroger all the way up to $19.55 for "organic". Quite a range !
Whatever the market will bear. I sell my eggs for what I consider a very fair price. I was giving them away a couple of months ago. I was taking them to a local business where I knew some people. The last time I took some I priced them and there were no takers. It’s interesting how people will buy from the millionaires and fill their pockets, yet won’t help a single guy buy a little chicken feed. And if they think that you’re overpriced, they look at you like you have three heads. You probably know that the war is on against chickens , and food in general.
As a little footnote, I say and had lunch with a fellow that had worked at a chicken factory. It was a very sophisticated operation. I don’t know what kind of chickens they were but he said that they sold for $30/each.
