      That depends on how you look at winning. If his initial goal was to feed his ego, to show his potential, then he certainly won. If his initial goal was to provide money post-death for his family, then he certainly won.
      If his goal was for his family to be better off after he was gone, he failed colossally. One of his family members is dead. His wife is a shell of her former self, and Walt Jr. is likely traumatized.

      I'm not convinced Walt died that night. We'll see in a week or so when el Camino comes out. While it makes sense, Hank is dead, Walt was just fading out from the gun shot. Sure, the cancer was eating him up. But, in cinema, nothing is final until it's shown to be final.

      If he wanted to help his family and not burden them with debt for his treatments, he would have taken the job at Grey Matter in season 1. He didn't because he couldn't bear the thought of only being given the job because he was pitied by the owners of a huge corporation that he feels he should own instead, since it was his research that build it. Instead, he dragged his family into a world of crime and violence and constantly put them in danger of being targeted by the cartels, all because of his pride

      It was never about his family… it was about his regrets. Him selling his company for 5000 that’s worth billions haunted him. Faced with death and regrets this was his chance to prove his intelligence since selling out for 5k would make anyone feel incredibly stupid. He created his empire. If it was about his family and not him he wouldn’t kill his brother in law… or go that far. He had more than enough to set them up for life but his inability to sell out again was the death of his family.

      @@derekmarks1479 All of the above comments make valid points. It speaks to the complexity of Walt's character and the way he faced his impending death. Although providing for his family when he was gone was his original motivation, he quickly became addicted to the excitement of pitting his genius against a string of very dangerous opponents and the thrill of outwitting them. Like he told Skyler in their last conversation: "I did it for me, it made me feel alive." Walt felt his drug empire was his one great achievement in a lifetime of failure. No wonder he couldn't just walk away from it and simply wait to die.

      @@Alknix Hey, I wanna take my moments to say thank you for helping me to re-ignited the passion on why I love this show.
      I have a short memory, but our little heated argument has allowed me to remember on a lot of good things from the show. The things that I didn't realize until now, I finally realize that Walt is a villain.
      This justified all the bad things he does, but here is the silver linings many like you have missed. We saw how Walt evolved, adapted and get better as he gain experience from the drug trade, he also has to outsmarted his competitors and even fight for his survival.
      Those special traits ultimately allowed him to explore the underworld of the drug trade. He was our eyes and he able to eliminated very dangerous drug lords, even the very elusive one. Even Hank from the DEA has a hard time tracking them down.
      You probably be asking, "What's all this have to do with why I hate Skylar and Walt Jr?" That's actually a very good question, because in one of the interview, the actor who play Walt even admitted that Skylar played her roll well and that shes a biatch.
      Anyway, let's back to the beginning where Walt went to the hospital for cancer treatment. As you already know, they got hit by a crushing bill that they never able to repay.
      Walt was given a golden opportunity of a lifetime and he choose a profession that sell drug to support his family because he happened to be a chemistry teacher.
      When doctors choose that profession, do you think they did it out of goodwill or they did for money to support their family? The enormous bill where hospital charge for the cancer treatment is like a dangerous drugs, they also destroy life. Have you ever thought about that?
      If you're Walt, what would you do differently to help your family with the cancer treatment debt?
      And how do you manage to keep Skylar and Walt Jr to be supportive of you as your medical bills keep stacking up?

    • @Alknix
      @Alknix Před 4 lety +27

      @@condorX2 Pretty much just bruised ego. Many years prior he'd sold his share of the company for 5000 USD because of some unspecified falling out (most common theory - Gretchen left him for Elliot), and then spent his entire life obsessing over their success. He convinced himself that G&E cut him out and built their huge business solely on his work, which probably has some grain of truth in it, but he's clearly grossly exaggerating. So, when Elliot, after learning about his cancer, offered him a job or just to pay for all his medical bills, Walt flew off the handle and chose to make poison rather than accept the "charity".

Being the super careful guy that he was (through years of being "in the business"), he would've checked the duffle bag for his gun IMMEDIATELY after taking it from Walt...especially since we see him dispose of all of his weapons into a well, right before he's about to leave town. It just felt too clumsy a mistake for him to make.

      Even after she found out about Walt's true job and got involved, she tries to control the situation time and time again whether it's picking out the "front business" to purchase, or just giving $600,000 to a guy she was having an affair with w/out even telling Walt.

When his cancer came back, he chose to quit cooking meth so that he could spend the remaining time he had with his family fully intact. She was a unsupportive bitch who care for Walt after hearing he has cancer, but grew jealous and agitated when she learned that's he has become a powerful drug lord, who gone through hell just to repay her debts.
      And then you have the ungrateful son, who happens to be an entitled handicap, who never bother trying to understand from his father point of views or what he had to go through. If Walt is my father, I would support him. Hes not just cool, but his work is like an occupation hazards. I was hoping Walt would use all his money to find a cure or like some movie which I forget, where the guy swallow a pill and he got super smart. He managed to make his own special super pills. I think Walt should go that path and see if he can race against time to beat cancer.

      @@djkameronblaze the couple didn't rip him off. This is a huge misunderstanding by a lot of fans maybe that's why they blindly root for Walter's triumph. Gretchen and Walter were once a couple, and there was one time he went on a vacation with her and her family. He got so intimidated by their status and lifestyle that he left abruptly and eventually sold his share on the Gray Matter for 5 grand. Walter always had been struggling with inferiority complex, and had been ripping himself off ever since. If you notice, every negotiation he did while building his empire, he was not settling for less ie., tuco and walter's first encounter and him setting a specific price, not abiding by Gus' commands and eventually taking him out. It's also why he married Skyler, who was a waitress back then and way lower than his intelligence level. The title itself says it, breaking bad. It never meant a good person broke and became bad, but the bad in him finally broke and got loose.

    I 100% disagree that Walt intended to kill Jesse.
    I believe he knew immediately that Jack was using/torturing Jesse.
    Think about it: he would know that Jesse would NEVER work with Todd.
    EVERYONE gets that wrong.
    Trust me, Walt went there to save Jesse, he never intended to kill him.

    • @nawreen7636
      @nawreen7636 Před 5 lety +71

      I agree with you to some extent Walt knows Jesse well enough to guess he would never work with people like jack and Todd willingly. Jesse was desperate to get out of this business since the moment Todd shot the kid Throughout the entire series walt understood Jesses thought process and abused it for his own benefit perfectly, used Jesse as his punching bag when things go wrong. Him suddenly believing Jesse willingly partnering and working with people like Jack, Todd goes against every episode of the show he knew that Jesse is the one who is cooking but he also knew Jesse won't work with those people and had been wanting to get out of the business for a long time I think Walter didn't understand why Jesse is cooking now when he heard first blue stuff is back again. he didn't went there to save him he didn't went there to kill him he went to kill jack and his gang for what they did and he wanted to understand why Jesse is cooking now which is why he told that whole fake speech about partnering to draw Jesse out to understand why he is cooking we saw some hints throughout the series that not knowing what Jesse is thinking or doing has bothered walt and created problems in walters plans. he draw Jesse out and waited till he was there to understand the situation better before he takes his final action I think Walter had no previously decided plan for Jesse. Walter handed over Jesse to jack and gang and from his partner speech people assume he went to kill Jesse but I think he would have never handed over Jesse to jack and gang if jack hadn't killed hank Jesse was the one who brought hank there and Walter blamed Jesse for hanks death he handed over Jesse not because he crossed walt but because in Walt's pov Jesse was partially responsible for hanks death
      Jesse had said walt had zero tolerance policy for threat to which hank replied except when it comes to u he cares about you Jesse doesn't believe that but it is the truth
      The reason Walter and Jesses relation are still one of the most debatable thing is because Walter loved Jesse as much as he loved his own son but Walter himself had never been aware of that he truly believed he does not care about Jesse there was a scene where Walter in a half conscious state and without realizing calls his own son Jesse which in a way supports my theory
      He cared about Jesse but he never realized it which is why his actions are unpredictable when it comes to Jesse Walter always has plans both for his family and his enemies but Walter never knew where Jesse stood enemy or family which is why when it comes to jesse Walter surprises everyone sometimes even himself

    I feel like the only possible way for him to win was to let himself lose. He is overwhelmed with guilt, and if he were to “win” by staying alive, he would have to kill a lot more. And he wouldn’t be able to take that. I feel like that final decision to let Jesse go, to tell the truth to Skyler, was Walter White emancipating himself from Heisenberg, even for just a few minutes. The final episode is Walter White leaving his mark. Him slapping Heisenberg in the face and trying to do what he has always wanted to do since everything went downhill, make amends. Not in the conventional way of letting people forgive you, but giving the people he hurt closure. Confirming that he is, in fact, gone. The only possible way for me to able to phrase it would be…
    The final episode is Walter White’s victory, not Heisenberg’s.

    Vince Gilligan has said while he doesn’t necessarily believe in heaven, he believes in hell. Therefore, my view is that Walter lost. He had no true victory in reconciliation with his family, could not protect Hank, and both his true son (Walter Jr.) and his other son son (Jesse) still hated him. The only real victory he had was revenge, which is a temporary high that gives no lasting satisfaction.
