  • The National arts theatre is the primary centre for performing arts in Nigeria, the construction was completed in preparation for the Festival of Arts and culture (FESTAC) in 1977. It has a 5000 seater main hall with collapsible stage and two capacity cinema halls all of which are equipped with facilities for simultaneous translation of 8 languages. Each of the cinema hall can accommodate 350 individuals. It has an exhibition hall with 1500 sitting capacity, a conference banquet hall which sits 1000 persons, a universal studio of arts, a section where artworks and paintings are made by highly skilled sculptures. The theater also has an underground car park of 250 capacity amongst others.
The edifice and the whole complex is now undergoing rehabilitation and redevelopment which is estimated at a cost of $50 million which will be financed by the bankers committee in a public private partnership (PPP) with the federal government of Nigeria.
The national theatre will be redeveloped into a creative hub for film, fashion, music and information technology (IT).
In this video, I will be taking you guys on a tour of the National Theatre in Lagos to see the ongoing works there and to see the new edifice under construction within the premises.

    Nostalgia.
I remember in the 1990s, the National Art Thaetre's Main Auditorium was where major entertainment events were held before the Eko Hotel Convention centre took over these days.
I saw Opa Williams' Night of a Thousand Laffs on October 1st 1997 at this venue.
Before Silverbird Cinema and other ones came on board in the mid 2000s, this was the major venue where new films are screened before it is released into video cassettes.
Hopefully, these renovations can bring back life to this iconic venue that suffered the Nigerian menace of not maintaining public infrastructures until they decay before our very eyes.

National ttheatre is a masterpiece of architecture, hard to believe the same Nigeria that once built something like this is busy building four walls concrete in Abuja without design...😅Abuja need something like this and better,6 and 12 storey of that world trade center design and more.Thank you.

Abuja truly deserves to have something of this nature, like an arena.

Nigerian's major infrastructures were built by the military. These rehabilitation projects look abandoned with no workers on site and bushes already covering the sites.

I bet you the national theatre reconstruction will be abandon again for another 30 years. Even through your video you can see that work has stopped. Do you see anyone working on site? Certainly none. I was living in Nigeria when the National Threatre built by a Bulgeria firm was constructed and opened in 1977 for Festac. I was also in Nigeria when the usage of the place was abandoned before i left Nigeria. And i left Nigeria for Overseas 37 years ago , but unfortunately The Nigeria National Theatren has not been completely renovated and put to use. In Nigeria no maintenance culture. The money budget for it must have been diverted by individuals assigned to manage the renovation.

Maybe you need to come back home!😂😂😂
Nigerians, most of whom are educated and with a high sense of awareness, can't continue to desert the country in droves and still expect it to look like paradise!
I believe collective responsibility is the key to our development!
