I hate running. I don't have a "runner's body". I am simply too big at 6'7" 265 lbs so running any sort of distance has always been a bit challenging for me. As I have aged, my joints scream at me when I am doing any sort of running and get past the 3-mile mark. I do work out 7 days a week switching between weight training and cardio exercises with 3 days of MMA training for fun. I have been involved in sports since I was 5 years old (wrestling). Sadly, running has been a part of my fitness routine while playing sports since I was 5 years old lol.
The reason I say all of this is that the simple act of "running" has been part of most kids' lives since we have been able to walk on 2 feet. It certainly looks like your kid had a much higher energy level in the first half of the marathon than any of the adults did. I don't see a problem letting the kid run as long as he can physically do it, emotionally do it, and nobody is "forcing him" to do it. Teaching a kid and supporting him to continue on isn't forcing. He is learning to find his low-end limits and then working past them or digging deeper to pull out that extra effort.
Things like that will serve him well all throughout his life in sports, business, and his personal life. If your doctor doesn't see any sort of negative effects physically on his body (normal injuries don't count) then I don't see how anyone can claim any sort of abuse or other BS. Sometimes, people just need to STFU and keep their noses out of other people's business. At least he isn't sitting in front of a tv screen where the only muscles working are the ones in his thumbs from the game controller. As an outdoor and sports person, to me, parents that allow hours upon hours of that, are abusive to their children.
My triplet 9-year-old girls are heavily into sports with the main one being 3 different styles of Martial Arts (Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Hapkido) and they have been doing that full contact, including sparing, since the age of 4 as their mother, who is their instructor, is a High-level Black Belt in each of the Disciplines. Nobody has said we are "abusive" to our children allowing them to kick, punch, and throw others and themselves onto the ground. I was in wrestling since the age of 5 and nobody said my parents were "abusive" even though many of the wrestling moves can be painful on the body and the joints.
The "Trio of Terror" (my nickname for the triplets lol) are now wanting to prepare for the Schools Cross Country team even though they can't be part of it until they are in 7th grade (12-13 years old) but because the team is exceptionally good and always places individuals and the team, high at the state championships, they wanted to learn proper running techniques and be able to run long distances before they get to the age they can join the team. They run up and down the roads now to stay in shape for their martial arts, gymnastics, and softball but nobody has said anything negative to us about it. They stand out because you see these 3 very tan with long legs, identical-looking girls (they still coordinate their clothes lol) running down the road with their long blonde hair flowing in the wind, you can't miss them lol. Perhaps it is because they are very tall for their age so people think they are older than they are??? Their teacher did a class picture this spring and they are at least a full head taller than everyone else in their class. I have coached many kids sports (football, wrestling, and baseball) at all levels and ages and no one has ever said to me that little kids shouldn't run farther than xx miles or not do this or that. I have never heard of what some of these people are telling you about how it is dangerous for them to do it.
I do have to laugh at all the "armchair experts" in your video, throwing their two cents in about how they believe you allowing your little kid to run is "bad" or "not right". Just because Piers Morgan wouldn't let his kid run doesn't mean you shouldn't let yours.
At any rate, I wish your family the best of luck and I applaud you for having more "patience" with stupid people who believe you are trying to harm your child by allowing him to run than I would lol.

The only way this is abuse is if you had me run that Marathon 🤣🤣 congratulations Rainer you did what you wanted to do and you prove them all wrong just because they're adults don't make them right sweetheart. What I saw in this race was two parents that encourage the little boy he wanted to go on they stopped several times for him to rest he was given the proper nourishments throughout even took time to play in the playground more than once. Then what did he do he wanted to continue his Marathon. All of you haters should be ashamed of yourself these are very good parents and they help this little one do something that was very important to him isn't that what we're supposed to do as parents. To go on TV and say this is wrong well I'm telling you you're wrong to say such things discouraging a child for going after his goals after training for it. Shame on you. Congratulations Rainer you are the winner in my books. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆

It's apparent you live a not normal life style. So what, it's even way more apparent you love your family and kids. Those who are fighting you are also fighting the rest of us. ONLY if you do what they want, how they want is it OK. Freedom, what's that. IF your son want's to do this isn't his CHOICE. He is allowed to change genders by choice but can't run by choice. The only real IMO concern solved by your family pediatrician is limits to prevent issues later in life. (Something Rainner’s can't tell he is hurting himself, like knees. MAYBE) With you the best and yours. It's yours and his business, no one else's. LOOK AT HIS FACE. 1 HOUR 9 MINUTES IN. AMAZING AND WONDERFUL. If you support the Flying Pig freedom isn't something you support. Adults only can run. What a joke, seems pigs can't fly or run.

I was gobsmacked that they gave him a DNF. Even if there was public backlash, noone could dispute that he did finish, plus was dragging a bunch of ballons as well. You want to DQ him, that could be argued, but a DNF is offensive & would be so much worse for him. That lesson would have been "you can accomplish big things, but you'll never be recognized for it." I was so relieved that it was changed back.
If onlookers thought he should be smiling & joyous the whole time, they have clearly never experienced an endurance event. The "wall" sucks, but breaking through it feels like the Kool-Aid Man: "Oh yeah!" LOL. Congrats Rainier! And to your mom & dad, too. I can't imagine holding a low to the ground little hand through an event like that! Your whole family is truly an inspiration. Hugs to you all!

Hi, I'll be the first to admit that I have reservations over children doing long distance events (I am also a runner), and have followed all the backlash that you guys got from the running world with regards to having Rainier run. I also took the time to watch some of your videos. What bothers me, is that most of those who made very negative comments, really have misunderstood this whole marathon journey for your family. They all were commenting under the premise that you were having Rainier "race" and "train" for this, and that you were "living out your dreams" by having him participate. Nobody bothered to really take the time to see what was actually going on before making these blanket statements: 1. He was not 'racing', and your family has NEVER been about racing, placing, or time goals. You even wait for each other to cross the line, you stop when you need to, and take breaks. This isn't a 'race' for you, or for winning a gold medal. 2. The "living out your dreams" comments is again, based on just pure speculation and perhaps on past stories of crazy parenting of child prodigies that we have seen over and over again in the running world, none of which apply to you. Neither you nor Kami ever had aspirations as competitive runners, and have never been about 'training' a competitive child runner to win races. That is so clear if you take the time to even watch a few of your marathon videos. Although I do have reservations about some aspects of all this, I just wish that people would actually stop and watch your videos, listen to what you are saying, and actually SEE what is going on, not just assume this is another crazy parent having their kid do kilometre repeats on a track to earn their food (yes, I've seen that in person...horrific). I do think that at baseline, you are trying to create a family tradition, to encourage closeness amongst your family, and that is something that has been lost in all of this hoopla. I have been thinking of commenting for weeks, and was finally compelled to after watching this well-done documentary.

My concern would actually only be if a child had a strong dream and desire to compete on this level, wanted to be part of his sibling group and had a father who kept saying "you are to young" or "you can't run like that yet" and instead of trying to facilitate a child's desire, squashed it. Of course I would caution any parent undertaking such a thing to make sure thr child is properly trained and prepared and that they have medical clearance for their training program as well as clearance for a race. I know they had children before they did much the same way but every child is different, medically and emotionally and a 6 year old may not be in the perfect condition to run such a distance. Children can well amaze us with what they can accomplish and startle us with how they are much more fragile than accepted

This is so cool. Rainer, this is a message for you. I ran in school and continued to in the Navy. As a 9 year Navy Veteran and a 27 year retired firefighter, you are my hero. Let me say that again, YOU ARE MY HERO. I have seen so many people say they can’t, you kept saying you could. You knew you might not finish, but that is life, but you wanted to finish, so you did. Take this same attitude with you with everything you try in life. Yes you may fail, but it really isn’t a fail if you tried. But if you think you can do it, you will succeed much more than you will ever imagine. For all of those who say they do not think this is not healthy for you, they do not know you. This is the responsibility of you and your family knowing you and how your mental and physical state is. For the family, do not ever let the world tell you this is wrong. It is only wrong for most kids, not every kid. Dr practice for a reason, that is because they cannot get it right. As a firefighter I know of 4, not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 different Drs who I had to assist because they did not know a basic skill of how to save a patient in cardiac arrest. These were Dr I swore I would not let them practice on me. Rainer, please for me, go learn CPR, then you will be smarter than most of the Dr who said this was not good for you. Once again, RAINER, YOU ARE MY HERO. A job well done.

@@zachall101 It seems you may not have paid attention to what really happened that day and you’re jumping on the same wagon as so many of the “OMG-NO!!” reactions. Sad, that so many have done the same. If you must ask: “How stupid can you get…”. Well, let’s turn the question on you. You/They only see a 6 year old “running a marathon”. And though, yes he did. You see the marathon run though the eyes and/or mindset of: A start gun goes off. The clock starts. Everyone starts running. And nobody that finished stopped at all before they did so. Like it’s an Olympic Event. BTW- That’s “Years of training”.
If you watch and listen to the whole story and what really happened here, you may realize a few things:
They stopped, A LOT. They rested. They walked. A LOT. They finished (pretty much) last and all still had the energy to walk back to help another “runner” who finish behind them. Actually, the 6 year old RAN back. They didn’t push it this kid anymore than he would have pushed himself spending all day at Six-Flags or Disney World. And nobody jumps up and says a thing about that happening every day.
If you feel the need to ridicule these parents for what happened that day, without knowing what actually did. Perhaps you should go discuss with a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon what soccer is doing to kids knees and Little League pitching is doing to kids elbows. Put your energy into that cause. Not bashing parents over something you obviously just assumed happened.

@@zachall101 And its people like you thats destroyed children's self confidence and force them to pick up beliefs they don't understand. If there's anything a child his age would understand better then anyone it would be his own body, when he wanted a break they took a break, when he was hungry they got him something to snack on, when they got to the playgrounds and the bounce house they let him have fun. They did not force him, they did not push him to go faster or harder then he wanted to, and the sure as hell didn't abuse him. Sad thing bout most people today wouldn't know real abuse from being a great parent, and I know abuse I went threw it and when someone says a parent is abusing their child when they are actually being a better parent then the fake woke parents that force there kids into believing something they have no need to be exposed to and beating their children half to death, thats real abuse not pushing your child to accomplish their goals and listening to what they want, it makes me laugh and tells me they have had to have it good or doesn't understand what real abuse looks like, but its also sad because those type of parents have children who think they are intitled and believe they can get away with anything which is whats truly wrong with our country today.

Congratulations to Rainier for accomplishing his dream! You only have to look at his face when he crossed that finish line to see how proud and happy he was. That smile could light up a room for days. Gotta love how the little kids can be like a whirling dervish, exhausted, take a 10-minute break and be ready to do it all again. If people would just remember how much energy and stamina they had when they were young and how lethargic and sedate they get as the years pass maybe they'd see that they've fallen into the societal traps the supposed experts have lured us into, making us weak and frail the older we get.
Rainier had fun, did it at his own pace, and could have quit anytime if he really wanted to. It's not something I'd expect to see him doing on any regular basis, but his enthusiasm was undeniable and the rewards were great in his mind, which is all that really matters in the end. Child abuse my big fat buttocks, the real abuse is restricting your kids so much they are afraid to try anything that might be uncomfortable. To me, that's the real sign of a parent who is living their dreams thru their kids and their own dreams are the limiting factor. Good for you both for letting your kids explore their dreams!

Troop flags are red & white plus everyone back then would KNOW that meant kids were up ahead on this 4 mile stretch where the bike path is on the shoulder due to the narrowness of the roadbed. My point is it was a dangerous journey for a 12 y/o on mountain bikes & 10-speeds. My brothers, bike incidentally, was a Schwinn Stingray complete with Banana seat & bell bottom jeans! lol. Still all the parents signed the trip permit and they earned one of the biking patches. It wasn't long enough for the 50 mile, but still.

I loved Rainer's answer! "We've never seen one before " Our society doesn't like change very well and are shocked when something new happens Sometimes it takes a child to really wake us up out of our rut.
I was wondering about the CPS call and I am so happy that you all are doing great and dropped the case! Thank you Crawford family for your inspiration. I am 45 years old and I walked from my house to Stone Mountain and walked back home. It took me three hours to do it. I just got off Oxygen Therapy for being in it for 2 and a half years. I am about to be 45. You inspired me to do it again.
I just wanted to say that we can't judge a book by its cover. I wish we would all learn to not over react and take the time to ask. You know?

You are a great family that work together. I wish more people would have family activities. A family that can play together stays together. You trained togethe,r you finish together. No matter how long it takes,, you do it together. Your an inspiration to all families. I just might start something as well.

You have a beautiful family. It is great to see parents encouraging outdoor activities and family activities. Way to go. And congratulations to your kids and especially your youngest for completing the marathon. The fact that your older children ran back to you to help once they were close to the finish speaks volumes to the great job you have done raising them. Thank you for sharing.

Rainier is so adorable! Glad he finished the marathon. This honestly made me want to run a little! I am not a runner whatsoever but I have ran a mile or 2 in college. It was extremely hard to me but felt good when I finished. If he wants to run, I don't see a problem with it. He can completely stop if he wants to.

WOW! What a documentary. I loved it. I do remember this story on the news and my critical feelings about it. However, this doc Cleary shows a different perspective, one I support 100%. The benefits all your kids have derived from this are Immense! Life lessons, inner knowledge, confidence, perspective....not to mention family love, loyalty, strength, compassion....just on and on awesomeness. I thoroughly LOVED this doc! Ties with my #1 pick, actually.
Many congratulations to your whole family!

Beats having a child that sits behind a video game all day or is out doing drugs or breaking into people's homes. This is one child that will likely grow up knowing he can be or do anything he puts his mind to. Bravo for him.

The problem sadly is people aren’t used to this kind of parenting where the child does have a choice Rainer did the marathon because he wanted to he was happy to do it, but people don’t understand that concept that he could have stopped if he wanted to he knew he had a choice.

this made me so emotional seeing how rainier took this. i’m so proud of him. My dad is huuuuge into running, usually one or 2 marathons a year and i wish i could do them with him lol
growing up i’d run small mileages with him but i have bad asthma and bad mental blocks and eventually quit, only running for my sport now.
but seeing how happy this kid is and the support and gratitude his family radiates makes me want to run again.
i understand these peoples concerns and health related concerns but with the support system you lift, the constant breaks and the fact he was so determined you guys did so so great! he truly is an inspiration to so many and i hope he realizes that! i wish i could go back to his age and stick with running with my dad.i’m so glad you guys are so mitvational with him

This film is beautiful. I cried several times- hearing the confidence from the older sibs that Rainier would finish, hearing you and Kami marvel at what you’ve created in your family, that moment when Memory came back to join R to finish, and of course watching you reunite at mile 25 and all finish together. ❤️
And let’s not forget Andy! What a hero. The doctors said he would never walk on account of CP and here he is running a marathon. Hearing him describe how he always felt left behind and outcast and then watching your family include him as part of the pack… and that moment when Rainier runs back to him to cross the finish line with him. It’s beyond beautiful. I imagine Andy was quite determined and gritting his teeth to finish but must have felt very alone there toward the end until you guys ran back for him. So much inspiration there- resilience, persistence, healing, pure love.
I also love watching R’s journey through this. The excitement and the preparation but also not taking it too seriously. And his emotional journey throughout the race itself- I imagine his thoughts cycling between excitement/joy, determination, and defeat. I think one of the reasons I’m so inspired by him is that I still have that 6 year old inside of me that gets hot, tired, and feels like something is too hard. We all do (let’s be honest, we are all a bunch of grown 6 year olds walking around!). Watching him find it in himself to bounce back and move forward inspires me to do the same.
This is one of those stories that couldn’t be any better if it were fiction and it’s indescribable to see it as a true story.
Thank you Crawfords for what you have created.

I think it was awe inspiring. I'll admit I had concerns too but you let him do it at his pace. You didn't push him. It's like you said you let him do whatever he wanted. He just wanted to finish with his family. Unfortunately the way society is today you going to get flack no matter what you do. People are always going to find the wrong in something. All I know is that you as a family and Renier did a great job. No matter what I am very impressed and my heart is full knowing you. Don't let this world get you down. You owe it to yourselves to Strive forward and love. Thank you for this program to your son and to all of you by not giving up.

  • @MikeHarrison3266

We are in an age where kids are not encouraged to even try to push past what they consider to be their limits which are very low. Having seen the documentary it is very clear the little guy wanted to do this and the family worked together to ensure he was prepared and safe and could have stopped and indeed would have been stopped if he was in any real distress. We have a huge problem today where kids are not being encouraged to be the best they can attain and that is really bad for this generation. I suggest this young man will not have issues about this and has in fact gained massively from the experience. As for all the negativity from so-called do-gooders, I suggest they mind their own business and keep the hell out of other people's lives.
Working to reach your dreams can be hard but the reward of getting there can be amazing.
