Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker are for many the *definitive* versions of the characters and this movie shows exactly why.
That laugh from the Joker as everything burns around him is *LEGENDARY*
rest in peace batman
If you want a pure Batman experience, Batman: The Animated Series is a pretty damn good place to start. Really shows you the kind of person Batman is besides "guy who beats up the mentally ill."
He could watch Critic’s Top 10 Batman TAS episode
There’s that, and the 2004 series for afterwards
This movie features the defintive batman kevin conroy who unfortunately passed away at 66 recently last year
"First Batman movie experience!"
It's a great movie to start with. Also, whenever you ask what's wrong with Jared Leto's Joker; the way Joker acts in this movie is how Joker is SUPPOSED to act, not whatever pimp phase Jared Leto was going through
So a lunatic
@@theduckgoesmoo That's putting it mildly for Joker, but yeah
To be fair, the Joker acts different every incarnation. There's Golden Age serial killer Joker, goofy prankster Silver Age Joker, philosophical anarchist Post-Crisis Joker, etc etc.. Technically speaking a street level crime lord Joker isn't too far fetched. The problem is Leto's Joker was rewritten about 10 times throughout production and even in editing, and as a result even Leto himself had no idea what he was supposed to be. There's a reason both Leto and Ayer hate the Joker we got in the final film.
I always found that scene with the dude infected with laughing gas kind of chilling, and not because of the dude himself, but because of the fact that Batman is so scary that he was able to briefly *scare off the laughing gas in him*
Duck: "I've never seen a Batman movie, I've only seen suicide squad and joker."
While I appreciate that you saw joker, it doesn't excuse the fact that I want to fight you for not seeing a Batman movie ever. That's like childhood 101, what are you?
He's a dude that just appeared out of thin air one day. Or maybe he's an alien, or an android trying to understand human pop culture.
@@Tahanok2 damn it all makes sense and here I thought Zuckerberg was the only one who couldn't play his part well.
It's highly believed that he was born in a lab & escaped 5 years ago
Working theory is that he came from the moon.
Uhhhh moo? To be fair the only reason I’ve seen the joker is because I watched it with my girlfriend at the time she also got me to watch baby driver and the conjuring
3:52
"Why, because... bad?"
>Batman: The Animated Series
>Bad
Pick one.
Rest in Peace, Kevin Conroy, an entire generation was raised on your phenomenal performance as Batman.
"First Batman movie experience"
NOT EVEN BATMAN!? WHAT KIND OF SAD CHILD- ok, not-jokes aside. This is a nice starting point. Even tho, I'd still say the Tim Burton's Batman is the right start for a movie Batman casual fan: after all, the Burtonverse inspired the animated series, which this movie ties in.
But hey, Critic did all the main cinematic movies of Batman, I'd suggest a watch of them all.
You’re not new here… how am I surprising you?
@@theduckgoesmoo because... You miss a cartoon, that's fine. You missed 4 series of movies? It's impressive
I mean, I guess if it's your first batman movie experience...kind of, then I'm glad it's this one.
04:33 We thought that day was close but recently a lot of ignorant people have shown that it's still far away.
05:54 Someday these "who?"s of yours are going to get you into trouble...
12:28 There are...a few answers to that question. Depending on the continuity.
12:42 Good Burger isn't great. It's just good. Hence the name~
13:28 If I watched every single video you did, I'm sure I'd have made a "who" counter for you by now.
14:00 Bro. You don't understand. This scene is what made me realize that Batman was something special. That there was something that, at its best, the word "epic" couldn't be enough to describe. I once read a comment (that was probably killed off by COPPA. Never forget) that stated something akin to "On that day, angels sang and demons cowered for the one who would bring justice was born. The Batman".
Hilariously, there was also a comment I remember that said "On that day, every criminal in Gotham collectively shat themselves without knowing why"
15:10 I don't remember a line that hilarious in this review.
23:57 No Duck, her father went to a farm upstate-Of course he died! This is Batman the animated series, they're not known for playing around.
28:04 Again. The show doesn't always end with something akin to "And then the day was saved, thanks to...BATMAN". In this, people make terrible mistakes and have to live with them and be haunted by them. And some people's mistakes cost others their lives and leave their fates uncertain. The ending basically signifies that there's nothing Batman OR Andrea could do as they've made their choices and just had to deal with the meaning of the last few events and in Bruce's case, continue fighting for justice anyway. Andrea going to jail or something, would've cheapened it.
I’m gonna meet god one day and my first response is going to be “who?”
@@theduckgoesmoo
“How was I supposed to know who you are? You just look like some dude with a beard.”
Since we're on this road of new experience, why not also kick of with another long-awaited request with Fox Kids? You're gonna need to grab yourself some popcorn though if you plan on watching it.
I second this
Unfortunately he's doing the terrible BvS clipless review next. We gotta campaign hard for the Fox Kids review. I request it every Monday
Sadly he was leaving town for a bit and recorded the reaction the day before this went live.
@@thehonestreviewer7754 We should both suggest it again tomorrow still.
also, R.I.P. Kevin, Conroy. You gave us 90's kids and beyond so much to enjoy and stood alongside the michael keaton versons of giving us mature content kids could enjoy.
For the curious, the order to watch the original DC animated universe is Batman the animated series, with phantasm taking place early in the series I think, followed by superman the animated series, with the new Batman adventures taking place concurrently, followed by the cross-over Batman-superman world's finest (think that is what it was called), followed by the Batman/superman adventures, followed by justice league, followed by justice league unlimited, with Batman beyond simultaneously to justice league unlimited(due to them running at the same time and crossovers caused by time travel) with the return of the joker movie taking place towards the end of the Batman beyond series. The final episode of justice league unlimited is basically the end of the original DC animated universe and it is really the final episode of Batman beyond.
You forgot Static Shock and about 5 movies. Also Zeta project, but nobody cares about Zeta Project.
@@Tahanok2 ah, so I did, but which movies (to be honest, I barely watched static shock though).
Justice League doom, and crisis on infinite earths possibly? They aren't officially part of the continuity of the original DCAU, crisis was going to be a bridge between justice league and unlimited at one point I think, but character changes made it different (not having the same green lantern, savage being different from the tv show version).
@@jayburn00 Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman
Batman and Harley Quinn
Justice League vs. the Fatal Five
@@Tahanok2 oh yea, forgot about those. I did remember return of the joker though.
Please react to Nostalgia Critic's review of Fox Kids
I second this as well
@The Honest Reviewer Ugh, unfortunately he's doing the terrible clipless review of Batman v Superman 😒
According to him, he recorded it before this reaction went live because he was going out of town.
3:28 The internet made a joke about the Critic's lookalike in the Batman trailer. The Critic went along and joked he was in it.
Sadly, this animated movie didn't get much in the box office due to poor advertisement. Sadly, a good number of people want to avoid animation. They didn't like Suicide Squad or Batman v Superman, I tell them about better versions like Assult on Arkham or The Dark Knight Returns but sadly, they stay in their mainstream bubble and watch only the live-action.
5:50 - 6:15 If I had never seen Batman The Animated Series or know of Shirley Walker's work, and heard this opening theme on it's own for the first time, I'd swear this was to a supernatural horror movie. I literally get chills every time. Imagine if they played this music to the opening credits of Clive Barker's Hellraiser or Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak. In fact, Shirley Walker did horror movie music for the Willard remake and Final Destination films of all things before she passed away.
Just a quick correction, Batman is not young in this movie. The flashback sequences occur roughly 10 years prior to the film's main setting. In fact, the show already had 65 episodes before the movie was released.
Fun fact: in the comic version of the phantom, it was actually Andrea’s father who was the phantoms so this movie actually didn’t really make it too obvious if you read the comic.
But if you didn’t, then, yea, Andrea becomes a prime suspect.
Duck man : I never seen any batman movie
The comments: bruh
If you decide you watch the rest of the Batman and/or dc movie reviews he didn't do them in order. The order from the oldest is
Batman and Robin (One of his most earliest reviews)
Superman 4 (Featuring comic book reviewer Linkara)
Catwoman
Man of Steel (Featuring other reviewer Angry Joe)
Batman v Superman (Also featuring Joe)
Wonder Woman
Green Lantern
Batman Forever
Justice League
SuperGirl
Superman Return
Batman Returns (No relation to the Superman one. Also a Christmas special)
Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Yes this is a thing and it’s actually really good)
Wonder Woman 1984
Batman Begins (Start of Dark Knight Month)
Dark Knight
Dark Night Rises
Batman 1989
The Batman
Kyle, Kyle, Kyle. I don't know why I enjoy you so when you do things like call this your first Batman movie experience. Having a movie experience means actually watching the full movie. This is more like the Demetri Martin joke about a book written in 5th person where every sentence starts with "I heard from this guy who was told by somebody".
But then, I'm a movie buff. In fact today I got a movie set in the mail full of movies by people you probably never heard of, the Marx Brothers. Have a look for a compilation of Groucho's greatest insults sometime.
I'm going to go into more spoilers regarding Andrea.
While this film would be her *only* appearance in terms of the DC Animated Universe (DCAU), she gets a single cameo appearance a decade later in the final episode of Justice League Unlimited episode, "Beyond." In it, we see that in an attempt to make a new Batman for future generations, Amanda Waller would hire Andrea to kill the parents of a young Twrry McGinnis in front of his eyes. However, Andrea refuses, telling Waller that if she were to carry Batman's legacy into the future, that they she honor his wishes and morals.
Given that the Joker doesn't die in his final scene in The Phantasm when Andrea takes him away, this means we can interpret that Bruce DID leave an impact on her.
You might be the only person in the world who has seen movies focusing on the Joker before ANYTHING having to do with Batman. I think that deserves some kind of award.
I think you can probably do his other batman reviews he did over the years, as he has done the Dark Knight trilogy in the same month he did this review, or go with the other older batman films he reviewed earlier like Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and even the oldest review Batman and Robin on his channel. I don't remember if he has done the 1989 Batman film, but he also done a review on one scene from Batman Beyond Return of the Joker, talking about the best death of Joker. These are all reviews he has done on his channel before this one.
They made four batman animated movie set in the dcau universe however this one and the batman beyond movie are considered the best

Yes please
I'd recommend watching the Honest Trailer for Batman the Animated Series- it's a great explanation of a great series
2:59 - The Diabetic-Tattoo is actuall Kinda Smart. When a Doctor Needs to help you fast and you are passed out
Kevin Conroy death crushed me (says the guys that is used to an Italian dubber that dubs even the others animated Batmen, not just Conroy's*)... He was in his 60s! He had half his life in front of him! Damn you, cancer! A legend died, the guy that coined the perfect "I am Batman" died. That... still crushes me.
*Curiously not in this movie (nor his older version in Batman Beyond): in this movie he was dubbed by Mayor Quimby Italian voice, here in Italy. And strangely it was fitting for younger Bruce. In Batman Beyond they did a mess: first off, they had the og Italian VA in the cast, yet old man Bruce was dubbed by another guy, yet they were consistant and in "Return of the Joker", they made use of both the voices, with the flashback scene. And yet the usual Batman VA voiced old man Bruce in the Beyond episodes in Justice League (let me tell you: he sucked as old man Bruce, but strangely not as old decrepit man Bruce).
We have a strange history of DCAU Batman's Italian dubbers.
Maybe you should make some time to watch Batman movies. I'm sure you'll enjoy many of them.
Especially this one. Don't spoil the fun with spoilers.

I guess it’s been a while since you saw Home Alone, huh?
Probably 15 years
It's definitely the best Batman movie and Kevin Conroy RIP as Batman and Mark Hamill aka Luke Skywalker as the Joker is the best duo ever .
The animation is beautiful, the story great , the voice acting phenomenal.
Hope you'll also react to a video from Nostalgia Critic called Is this the best Joker death ?
It's really cool
Well there was adult animation in America before, like the works of Ralph bakshi. But I know what you mean.

tamara is Diabetic I believe. I thing she admited as such in the 'making of the toon disney episode " or whatever it was called with the run of disney catoons back when saturday morning cartoons were still saturday morning cartoons and something kids looked foreard to instead of the nonstop spree of cartoons on the daily we have now.

Aren’t there other dc heroes that have similar costumes to Batman though
@theduckgoesmoo if by similar you mean wearing a cape and a mask, yes. Not too many characters dress too similar to batman except those in the bat family. And most of them are women, and the guys usually go with a bird theme. Also I hope this doesn't come off as rude. Just something you said in the video really caught my attention is all.
4:40 not just anime, there are a lot of great animated series and movies that didn't came from japan.
yeah doug actually did a video on good burger
batman the animated series was pretty much the perfect representation of batman it also has it's own extended universe with superman the animated series and justice league and justice league unlimited i highly recommend it

Also, the dc abridged series is partly made using the dc animated universe (mainly the justice league unlimited) as well as newer dc animated properties (young justice and a bunch of animated movies). It is hilarious.
You've never watched a good D.C comics film!! May I suggest Superman and Superman 2 (The original Super hero and reason for this Genre), Batman 1989, Batman Returns, This Film of coarse, The dark Knight trilogy, Justice league (snyder cut), Wonder Woman, Batman Under the red hood, and the entire DC animated Universe ending with Justice League Unlimited.....your a true fan at that point.
Was the joker not good??
Note: Watch the DONNER CUT of Superman II if you watch it.
If you’re reacting to these now you gotta check out Batman Under the red hood
10:04 That is a reference to a line from Home Alone, Kevin during the time he's by himself invades Buzz's room, then rummages through his stuff, and upon finding a picture of his brother's girlfriend - the one shown in the video - he exclaims "Buzz, your girlfriend, woof!"
You should react to his good burger review
my lord, dude....wtf? really? FIRST Batman movie? XD for real, WHAT is your childhood?!

If you’re interested, you should check out the Batman Beyond series. Interesting fact the year when Bruce decides to retire as Batman was set in 2019. It was really good but a bit underrated. Only lasted two seasons.

This is Definitely one of the Best Batman movies with the best voices for Batman and Joker. Batman was voiced by Kevin Conroy who sadly passed away late last year and he's voiced in so much media related to Batman as the Bat himself or a Cameo role, and the Joker was voiced my Mark Hamill who most may know as Luke Skywalker from Star Wars but You may know as the voice of Fire Lord Ozai from Avatar, and Definitely has the best Joker voice and Laughs(their is an entire video compilation of his Joker laughs from the DC Animated Universe it's so Good)
The phantasm basically became an assassin for hire, she appears in the final episode of justice league unlimited, which is actually more like the final episode of Batman beyond. She also appears in some comics that take place in the original DC animated universe

Why wouldn't you just watch the movie?
Phantasm is great, as is the rest of the animated series. It's kind of the first mass market cartoon not from Japan that is good for adults too. It has both the definitive Batman as well as the definitive joker. It also revived the popularity of animated super hero shows. Superman the animated series was made by the same people and takes place in the same universe. Later on, they had the great justice league show as a sequel series and Batman of the future with Batman beyond. Also, the Christopher Nolan movies are excellent (though the final one is a little weak in my opinion), superior to any superhero movie you have seen so far, no offense. Christopher Nolan is a great director in general.
