    There's a lot of misinformation out there about this important transition in a woman’s life. It’s no wonder why so many of us are confused or frustrated. Dr. Sara sets the record straight, busting several perimenopause and menopause myths.
    Dr. Sara covers the main hormones that are important for women to pay attention to in midlife. While estrogen is the primary regulator of the female body, there is a larger ensemble that includes progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, and cortisol.
    The changes that occur in the female brain in middle age are what drive the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause that many women experience - and think they simply must “suffer through.” In this lesson, Dr. Sara covers why and how those changes happen, so you have some important context.
    Hormone tests can give you the information you need to identify where you’re out of balance, which will guide how you use the Gottfried Protocol introduced later in this course.

    I was so stressed out all the time from ages 30-48. Horribly stressful job, kid at 37 and another at 41, stressful and complicated marriage, divorce at 43 which took 2 agonizing years to settle. My cortisol levels were off the charts. I just struggled through everything, night sweats, hot flashes, moody as shit, constantly ruminating on everything! I knew something was really wrong with me. I just started HRT and I’m praying it helps me. Life is so tough. The world is so ugly. Easy to get trapped in being depressed all the time. Being a woman is no joke!!

      I went though the same thing, then I decided to take charge of my own life. No one was coming to rescue me. I will handle my life my way. I fill myself with information like this Drs. and read alot of books on various subjects. I am the main character of my life now.

    I have been lucky. My experience of menopause was pretty gentle. My major symptom was sleep disturbances which are better now.
    My advice.
    Stop drinking. Alcohol is not a health food, pure sugar. Part of the weight gain issue is related to that for many women.
    Find some form of exercise and stick to it. I practice yoga, swim or walk most days.
    Eat as well as you can but don’t obsess about it. Cutting down on sugars helps a lot.
    Certain medications and supplements are helpful. My sister had horrible hot flashes, so she takes a very small dose of HRT. I take a mild antidepressant for my sleep and mood. I also take Vitamin D, Magnesium Glycinate and CBD drops.
    Get outside in the sun as much as possible ( with sunscreen and a hat).
    Let go of what you can’t change. Develop hobbies, stay interested in other people. Smile.
    Be philosophical. In ages past most women our age would be dead.
    Finally accept that nothing remains the same. We are born, we live and we die. We don’t generally go from a state of robust health to death. There is a normal slowing down and decrepitude. I used to get freaked out at my crepe-y arms but now I chose to focus on how strong my arms still are.

      beautiful reflection of what is just reality! I look for this info for my best health options, but embrace my life; having a beginning, middle, and end eventually. Anything else, for me, feels like youth worship. which is a disservice to our wise elder women and a way of pandering to patriarchal pressures.

      Great video & comments. I know the Death rate is 100%, so be deliberate. Dont waste your life bc you are here for a reason & a season. I hope mamy of us can find solutions for these physical & mental issues caused by a myriad of possible ailments. Spiritual health is imp too. Many yrs ago I accepted Jesus Christ who loves and cares for me. The Bible is my fav book. Jesus has brought much healing from a very traumatic childhood. Now I am trying to find a good menopause doctor in Northwest FL.

    Good news! I went through menopause about 15 years ago. The negative symptoms did not last long. My new frumpy figure disappeared and the most important change was that my mood swings and other mental health issues went away. I spent 30 years being depressed, having pms and later pmdd. It might not be as bad as you have heard.

    I went to see a doctor about some deafness I was experiencing. The doctor asked me if everything else in my life was ok (it depends on your definition of "Ok!") I briefly mentioned a couple of symptoms and I said "Oh it's probably just the menopause". He picked on it and straight away said "we can help with that".
    I don't whether it was feeling seen and heard, or someone saying "I can help" after the last 4 years of pandemic, isolation and actually feeling dehumanised.
    I said yes please! This is in the UK. They now have "menopause clinic" where a qualified doctor calls you for a half an hour discussion on all things menopause.
    I'm now taking HRT, not a strong dose but the additional oestrogen is making a huge difference. Lots of outdoor time, yoga, unprocessed diet, kefir and I'm journalling...I've had lots of other stressors...Dad's stroke, relationship break up and financial difficulties...but...I'm determined...support and encourage each other, it's so important. 💚

      The United States is so behind on menopause awareness. I have a friend living in Germany who feels very equipped with the knowledge and tools to deal with it and she said in Germany the attitudes towards it are very different.

    I released from the military in 2019. I was 48, 253lbs, PTSD, RA, toxic relationship, and full on menopause……all I can say is I did it in my own with the assistance of my mental health….today, Oct 2023….I just turned 53 the other day….I’ve been single almost 3 years, best shape of my life, 138 lbs, my PTSD and RA are manageable, and I think I’m on the downside of the symptoms of menopause…..I’m not sure how I did it but WOW…..I haven’t had my period since I was around 42…..the depression I went thru once I moved away from that life….when I finally had some space and quiet…..I wish I had of known more…..I wish I had of known anything besides the hot flashes and the lack of menstruation….the hormones was the worst….but I feel fabulous right now…..and yes I know my body and have learned to truly appreciate what it can do! 🙌🏽❤️🇨🇦

      @@rebeccaw1772 honestly…..very slow. I didn’t change my diet when I started spinning…..I was losing weight…..20 min is what you need to get good endorphins. Eventually it wasn’t enough so I started using bands. Upper body, lower body, abs and core, using my Bowflex I did a circuit training to get those endorphins because the bands alone weren’t enough. The bands bothered my wrists, my Rheumatoid and I spent a lot of years digging trenches while in the army. So I mimicked the exercises using 3lb dbs….eventually I moved to 5s, now using 8s most times. Last year Feb 2023 I started going to the gym to use the big machines. I’ve been maintaining my weight now for 7 months. My diet slowly evolved and continues to. My journey was different. I truly did and continue to train for my mental health but I gotta say I do enjoy how I feel and look! I don’t even have pics….thats a bummer. Consistency is huge and I believe that when I started seeing muscles my diet started changing, it’s addictive! Good luck!

    I'm 42 and the way my PMS rage came out of nowhere and destroyed my relationships is crazy. It took me about 2 years before I realized that these big, knock out fights were happening once a month. Now I watch the calendar and have named my PMS personality Kiera and when I start feeling like the world is falling and everybody is lying to me and trying to trick me, I say "Stfu Kiera!" 😂 Sorry if your name is Kiera. I just thought it was a fiery, hot tempered kinda name, so lol

    I'm past the age of 60, still having regular heavy to moderate periods. Consulted a doctor, nothing wrong with me. I'm very active, very healthy, the docs said my body still thinks it's supposed to do this. I had blood tests, all kinds of tests. Still very healthy.

      Thank you for sharing. Is this hereditary? I have a family history of menopausal pregnancies. 50+ year old pregnant women. The babies were taken to term but usually given to family that were unable to conceive to raise after weaning. None of my generation are 50 yet, but close and we are all 🧐

    I had PAINFUL periods since 12 yrs of age. Never skipped a month. Sometimes got it twice in a month 😡 At 57, my period STOPPED. No skipping months. No on & off. Just GONE. NO HOT FLASHES NO Mood swings. No sleepless nights. NOTHING. Some of you may hate me ( just like I hated girls who had cramp-free periods). But I DESERVE IT for all the years I SUFFERED 😊 Had a stroke last year at 62. I have chronic pain. If I would have painful periods on top of it, it would be unbearable. Thank you God. Amen.

    I started experiencing phase 1 perimenopause in my early 30s. I've had intermittent improvements with diet and lifestyle changes. It's been so hard growing my career and relationships during this time. I work in a high stress industry and am considering a career change because it's been so hard. I've also got an appointment with a nutritionist who also works with hormones. Thank you for all you do, I look forward to seeing more of your content.

    The only thing that has worked for me in regards to hormones regulation is to limit stress and to eat healthy. Also, getting outside frequently doing things i enjoy helps with mood. I believe it helps with vitamin d and serotonin which help regulate mood and improve sleep.

      I am 54 years and if I knew what I know now I would have started HRT at age 44. If you prevent the dip in hormones completely you can prevent and protect yourself from certain issues due to hormone deficiency. You can start with low dose birth control pill with both estrogen and progesterone but make sure the estrogen amount is not below the minimum amount that protects you from dementia, heart disease and osteoporosis. The pill I take uses Ethinyl Estradiol and one needs 0.1 to 0.15 mg to be in the protective range. Mine is at 0.3 mg as this is the dose that totally relieves my issues. If you stop taking HRT you lose the protection for those 3 diseases. You have a 5 - 10 year window to start HRT from about age 50 but I wish I had started earlier and prevented the initial dip in hormone because it triggered an auto immune disease. Prevention is key so don't wait Unti things get worse.

    I am almost 51 and I can relate to everything you told us here. Thank you so much for all the information. With approximately 45 I started to gain weight and I exercised like a maniac, I hardly ate and I had the best body ever but there came a point where I was completely exhausted with 49 and I got blown up (too much estrogen), I gained more weight, I had memory problems, couldn`t concentrate on my job and my joints hurt a lot. I was an emotional wreck and searched for help-desperately. I was told it was all "natural", I shoult eat even less and move even more (I trained 4x1,5 hours weight each week). So I paid thousands of € for private bloodwork and private HRT and now I am on estrogen, progesterone and testosterone and I am really getting better allthough I am still cycling extremely irregularly. So I helped myself but the doctors weren`t supportive at all. It was all my own research, money and effort. By the way, I live in Germany and we are also still in a state of misinformation about that topic.

      @Hasmiral you look younger for your 55 age. Check your insulin. It is the basis of everything. When it's high, you can't break down fats, they just accumulate. Check fasting insulin and then check insulin again 2 hours after you intake glucose serum. If you solve this problem, you will be able to reduce calories and lose kg. Be healthy!
      Dive into the insulin issues. There are so many videos on CZcams on that topic.

      Strange why don't you go to a gynecologist in Germany not your regular dr they understand more and will provide you with hormones.

    I am 43 and in perimenopause since my late 30's. My greatest concern is my memory and i am wondering how i can help myself because its embarrassing. Modifying my diet and loosing weight helped a great deal with joint aches and inflammation. Still haven't gotten a grip on stomach ulcer though my diet has helped a little. I had a uterine prolapse when i had my first baby at age 30 so, there's a limit to the strength exercises i can do. My greatest comfort is from the Holy Spirit and having a wonderful community like this where we learn and get support. Thank you.

    I’m 51. I had no idea I was in peri menopause when my night sweats started at 40. I’m still getting them. I’ve been on hrt and it’s helped but I’ve come off it because of the weight gain and bloating. Plus I’ll need to come off them some day so it might as well be now 😢 a truly miserable time after having a very easy menstrual life since I was 12. I wish I could just die on the worst days 😢

    I had perimenopause around 26 yrs old,and hit full menopause by 45 but the only effects I got was night sweats and lack of motivation. I changed my eating habits and everything seemed to ease back to normal a couple years later . Every one of us women have different experiences during menopause.

    Thank you for this... I spent a year seeing various specialists who told me I had everything from chronic fatigue syndrome to fibromyalgia... I started the journey questioning my hormone levels with my Ob-gyn who handed me antidepressants and referred me to specialists instead of just testing my hormone levels. This knowledge is invaluable to every woman on the planet, thank you so much for shedding light on a process we all go through but have little support in.

    This information is something I will share with my daughter who is in her mid-forties. What is not discussed and my never be, is what a vibrant woman in her seventies might expect or need in terms of hormonal support if any! This is a field wide open for discussion and yet, little information is available for this age group. Some of us are not ready to let this be a non-subject matter. I for one have spent several years using bio-identical hormones but I know for a fact, even this therapy is inadequate and....may not even be necessary! The female body is designed to go through many changes and menopause proves that. Still, woman should not suffer from lack of information which might be available if it is out there. It should be a gift one woman gives.....to another.

    I'm surprised there was little/no mention of vulvar symptoms. So far that's been my worst perimenopause symptom. Vulvar itching, pain, etc. Estradiol topical has been a game changer for me.

      Exercise, yoga or walking and meditation helps. Slowdown in every days life ……Eating healthy diet and conscious living helps not meds. Please say NO to doctors if they prescribe steroids or anti depressants for every silly health issues. They want to make money by writing prescriptions. Talk about nutrition ( vitamins and minerals) eating right according to individual lifestyle and exercise. Awareness and educating ourselves is very important.

    I wish I knew all this before. I went straight into menopause at 49 and nobody warmed me about what it was coming. I am planning to go to the doctors and get into HRT. I have quite a few symptoms. Memory is my main worry as my mom has cognitive deterioration. Thank you for empowering us.

I tried your suggestion of modified keto and five years of hot flashes stopped practically overnight, I dropped 10 pounds, and I have so much more energy! Oh yeah, and the brain fog has lifted 🙂

    I have pcos so I've been onto my health for a few years now since being diagnosed at 34. I just turned 39. My goals health wise is to keep managing my pcos and to prepare for menopause. So I'm fairly on top of nutrition, exercise, rest, sleep and lowering cortisol. Exercise is now a habit and a normal thing, steps and strength training are key. ❤

    Doctor Sarah I love your knowledge you are imparting to us. This is needed as I have been disappointed by remarks from gyn/docs who dismissed me (offered antids or said i was too young for peri). I must say this really makes me jealous of men - I am in peri and its been difficult emotionally. My partner def doesnt understand and that makes it harder. I am so glad you are out there, I am not so glad mother nature takes so much from us in our 40s-50s and really doesnt feel that old! I still run/gym but everything makes me more tired.

    Curious to know if anyone else has experienced anxiety, hypertension, heart palpitations, achy body/hips, low libido, low energy & heavier periods as peri menopause symptoms?
    I’ve just turned 40 and my gut is telling me it’s caused by something hormonal?

      These sound like symptoms of low progesterone which is usually the first hormone to take a nose dive at the beginning of perimenopause.

      That is perimenapause , I have the same similar symptoms it started more at 39 now in early 40s it's hard and tough, I don't do hmt , I have tried some meds and some do help when it's the right ones , the brain fog is terrible and has covid not that long ago long covid symptoms,

    I was done with my periods by my late 40’s, long enough to forget about them. So when my Dr asked me when was the last time I was on my cycle, I automatically said “ we went on a mountain ride just this weekend”. Then I got an odd look, then I realized what they were asking; I still couldn’t answer.

      I began noticing changes at 44. You are not too young. Some women start noticing changes in their 30’s. Your doctor sounds clueless. I’d find a different one.

    She is such an amazing doctor and specially the way she explains the symptoms and causes. I thought i was going crazy and was ready to see a psychiatrist because of my insomnia and mood swings/depressions. Maybe i will go to an endocrinologist instead though i have a feeling the doctors here probably will not be able to give me a proper solution. I wish i could consult her

    I met my ex when she was 45. I noticed she had issues of anxiety and mood swings. She's an Avoidant attached, and she couldn't open up emotionally to talk about what I thought were concerning issues. I really loved and cared about her but she made it impossible to get my support. The relationship eventually failed and I was heart broken because I cared about her. Now realise, I was dealing with a person with premenopause or full menopause symptoms.

      My friend its close impossible to hv a sane relationship with an avoidant its even worse if in menaupose. If you like her physically it majes sense bz its imporrtant but i dont see how you can love who does not reciprocate love avoidants are ice cold and can very abusive. But again if its good sex its worth the patience. I wd take good sex over a loving person with unsatisfactory intimate life.

    I had a complete hysterectomy at age 27, I'm now 53. Back in the 90's they gave me Premerin which I had a bad reaction to. I decided to go without HRT. Nearly 3 years ago I started in some bio identical hormones. I'd have to say that they don't seem to be helping me much. I also was told I had a slow thyroid 2 years ago. Last winter, I quit taking my thyroid medication. I haven't been able to find a provider to help me with my thyroid. I did find a gynecologist to help me with HRT. I moved to a rural town in Upstate NY lake champlain area. I'm considering dropping the estrogen/ progesterone cream and replacing that with a Femring and low does of testosterone cream , too.

    So thankful for this! I feel like I'm all alone in my health trek. No mom or older women in my family, nor any trustworthy older female types. I'm 46 with major depression and general anxiety disorder (my whole life) and I'm trying my best to have the best life for me and my children. I'm kind of failing, but Dr. Gottfried has brightened my outlook.

      Dr G has great info! I don’t have insurance but started working with the TX company Ways2Well. I think it’s like $600 for the lab work & a Zoom consultation with a doctor to review the labs & get recommendations. Turns out all my hormones were super low. I’m now on estradiol, progesterone & testosterone since April & feeling so much better! Sleeping better & my A1c & Fasting Insulin are both down, I believe due to the hormones plus lifestyle changes I made to eat healthy & exercise more. It has totally been worth the $, even though I had to scrimp & save!

    I've never felt so validated. I'm 43 and I seriously only heard about perimenopause a year ago and I dismissed it because I thought if I haven't heard about it and no one really talks about it must only happen to very few women. What a total wake up call when I started experiencing nearly everything she described in this video....probably started when I was 37. I honestly thought I was slowly starting to go crazy and other people thought I was crazy too....what a relief is it to know it's actually all being caused by perimenopause. Everything from my moods, relationships and everything in between is being affected and I really started feeling like an absolute shitty person...like I was becoming someone else and that the old me was disappearing. I'm so grateful to have found this video when I did because I was really feeling soooo low. But now I'm feeling more empowered and hopeful. Thank you so much 🙏

    Thank you so much Dr Gottfried - I have been so scared of Menopause for the last 7 years of my life (I´m 37 going on 38) mainly due to the women around me and what it did/does to them. To be honest, I was scared to watch this video. Now I´m happy I did. Understanding the process makes me feel more at ease. Menopause seems to still be one of the big taboos that has to be broken! Women need to know what happens to their bodies and openly talk about it to each other! (edited for typos)

    Carnivore diet camouflaged my physical symptoms (weight and fat distribution), but the emotional stuff, brain fog, and periods changing, hit me last year. Going in next week for labs. Ty for this information.

    Praise God for creating us as a woman..God knows we are an amazing creation. Just be grateful and enjoy being a woman no matter what age we are in . Keep healthy and happy and worship God even though our hormones keep changing.. don't let those hormones issues snatched away our happiness in God and in life.     Good to be here ❤ thank you for sharing this important information. I am learning about this new amazing phase of my life that I am embarking to face soon. I'm 48 y.o. and starting to recognize some pre-menopause mild symptoms such as weight gain, irritability or feeling stress all the time and facial skin issuess: rosacea and acne. But I am being patient and kind with my body, soul and mind. I'm working on continue the healthy habits and eating food that will help the internal healing and energy influx.     New subscriber here. Liked your style, hair and glasses. 43 here, antidepressants at 28 after 2nd child due to horrible postpartum depression and no help from narc cheater husband. We divorced but mistakenly took him back 2019 😔I stopped antidepressants few times on my own but still need to fix depression and life 😒 Depression since 13. Had no idea it comes back with age. We should be supportive of those dealing toxics all around and encourage to release them but create more community and psychological abuse awareness.

    I am very lucky as I did not go through Menopause. I educated myself on hormones and had a comprehensive hormone profile done through a blood draw. You can purchase a test through Life Extension. They run a 50% off sale around June. I never had any of the hot flashes or night sweats like other women do. I make sure I eat soft-boiled eggs everyday (with the yolks runny). Cholesterol is a precursor to the Pregnenolone production in your body. Pregnenelone is the grandmother hormone that regulates the production of the 17 steroid hormones in your body.

    Must watch for all women above 25. All is 1000% true. Main medical does failed women in a big time. Every word in this video is absolutely useful. This one video is equivalent to 10 books or more.
    Being a women is extremely difficult in this day and age. I did Masters in Computer Applications and dealt with Narcs and then came along Autism Spectrum Disorder for my child…….
    All this caused unbearable peri menopause. Dr. Berg helped to understand and I took care on my own managing Adrenals and Cortisol. I 51+ still in cycle.
    Few of my friends have gone through horrific experiences like removing Adrenals and on so many meds for hormones, BP, insulin and cholesterol. Some of them are bed ridden.
    This information is GOLD. Please listen and I wish well and good luck to all women.❤

      I dated two narcissists starting at the age of 39 , I’m 44 now. I experienced such trauma from both relationships back to back. Both men stole my retirement savings and I lost my job during the pandemic. Now my peri menapause is absolute hell. Going thru it alone & exhausted. Thank goodness for this video and these comments ❤

    Been on HRT for a month and it has alleviated the hot flashes, anxiety, depression (aka mood swings), and dryness. I’m battling with body aches and exhaustion that keep me in bed . I force myself to run and do free weights, but the next day I suffer because I exercised.
