    Really enjoy your packing lists! I'm also a huge fan of the lightweight sun hoody instead of a typical button down hiking shirt. I had a quick question: how cold can you take the R1 + Torrid Apex combination while at camp? Is there a reason you went with a heavier fleece and lighter insulating jacket instead of a lighter fleece and down jacket? I'm currently trying to decide on good layers for colder weather backpacking and it seemed like the R1 would be overkill while active above freezing(?). Any thoughts would be really helpful, thanks!

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  Před 3 lety +5

      Thanks for watching! I would guess I would be comfortable down to about 30 while at camp with those two layers. Throwing a rain jacket on overtop definitely adds some warmth as well. The R1 is a pretty light fleece at 11 oz, I’m comfortable hiking in it at temperatures ranging from about 20 degrees up to 50 degrees especially when there is a breeze. The grid-stop pattern breathes really well. In fall temperatures I prefer to hike in a fleece when it’s cooler which is why I chose the R1, the Torrid Apex is just as warm (if not warmer) than most down backpacking jackets you’ll find. Obviously you can purchase some heavy fill down jackets that would crush the Torrid but I was actually shocked at how warm this jacket is. Much warmer than the Ghost Whisperer or my Stretch Down jacket both by Mountain Hardware.

    I just picked up an interesting base layer top. 100 percent Royal Alpaca. The company is called "Arms of Andes" Alpaca is warm when soaking wet and it does not absorb odor. I replaced a nike polyester/ fleece top and this weighed about the same.

    Enjoy your channel. So I was thinking about getter the Zerk 40 and see you switched to a Palante. Are you moving away from the Zerk? Any concerns? Also, how do those Salomon rain pants work? Water proof-ish and breath okay?

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Kent! The Zerk is great, I used it on every trip for over a year and just wanted to change it up. No real concerns with the Zerk, super comfy, great size, and well thought out. I do wish it had the fancy bottom pocket like the Palante but you can't have it all!
      The Salomon rain pants are great, pretty good rain resistance, windproof and breath really well. I've been using those pants for years and have enjoyed.

    that dcf v2 was my first real UL pack. i had some problems with the DCF creasing on the back panel pretty early on, to the point where it bothered the skin on my back. i like their switch to xpac but miss that dyneema mesh they used on the older version. how many miles you got on that thing?

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Alex, I also have wear on a crease on the back panel but it hasn't bothered me yet. Do you also own the xpac V2?
      I'm not sure exactly how many miles I have on this pack but probably at least 1000?

      @@juicehikes5436 i only mentioned it because when i switched to a breezier base layer like yours in the video is when i noticed it. I've got their newest v2 with lycra instead, but i am about to post it on ULgeartrade since I've gotten a swanky ks4 recently 😁

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  Před 3 lety +2

      That makes sense, I actually haven't used it with the Echo hoodie so I guess we'll see! Good call on the ks4, I've heard really good things. I'm about to pull the trigger on a Nashville Cutaway here pretty soon because you just can't have too many packs!

    What are your thoughts on the Pa’lante V2 pack versus your other pack? Thanks in advance...great content

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  Před 3 lety

      Hey Michael, thanks for watching! The V2 and the Zerk40 are both great packs but are just different. The Zerk has tons of pockets on the outside and is built out of a non waterproof material. It's probably a little less durable than the V2. The V2 is a little more simple with less pockets, has the fancy bottom pocket (which I love) and is made out of a waterproof Dyneema material. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but I really like both of them to be honest.

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  Před 2 lety +3

      This is the 10 ft hammock. Danny at Superior Gear makes his hammocks with less sag so a 10 foot Superior is quite a bit longer than most other 10 foot hammocks. I'm 6'1 and the 10 foot is great!

    What is leuko tape?

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  Před 3 lety +1

      Leukotape is a rigid strapping tape designed to rehabilitate and prevent various muscular and skeletal injuries. When properly applied around a joint, Leukotape protects ligaments and tendons by restricting movement, even during rigorous physical activity. It's also great for wrapping blisters or covering cuts and or chafing spots.
