The fact that the crew got 379 passengers out without any injuries in 90 seconds is insane. RIP to coast guards but the crew on the a350 need a raise that is impressive. This just shows that if you pay attention during the saftey demo you’ll be ok.
That is not what happened at all. 90 seconds is what the plane is certified for, it actually took them 18 minutes after they came to a stop, before everyone was off the plane.

According to VAS, JAL 516 was cleared to land by ATC, while the Coast Guard plane was instructed to "Hold." So, it appears that the Coast Guard plane committed a runway incursion, which did not give JAL 516 time to execute an aborted landing and avoid the collision.
It could also be that the plane landing misunderstood something. In all though it sounds like a simple case of communication failure which sadly cost so many lives.
@@Dan-di9jdplane landing misunderstood something? What like landing without permission? Which is one the worst offences a pilot can make? Likewise runway incursion. Why do you keep downplaying the seriousness of what someone’s done
We have no idea until the accident report comes in. The media is not exactly trustable with these kind of analysis since they for 1 don't have the radio communications, the black boxes, or anything else for that matter.@@jamie123b
@@jamie123bBecause we don't have ALL the details yet. I also tried to locate where and when the Coast Guard contacted Tower to enter the Active and since there's no read back whatsoever, it must've been communicating in UHF. Since there's no way for us to know if the Dash-8 were told either hold short or Line up and wait, I'd wait for the initial findings before we tackle this further.
@@pedrosoandrew One thing that is clear, there never was a transmission to cancel JAL516's clearance. So that's not on them. It was either the Coast Guard crew or ATC.

The Coast Guard aircraft ready to respond to the earthquake was on the runway. The JAL plane landed on the same runway and hit it as it was landing. Who had the right of way is the question. The fault could be with ATC, the Coast Guard, or JAL.

Looks like the JAL 350 landed on top of the smaller Bombadier Dash 8. The Dash 8 moved onto the runway instead of Holding on the taxi way as instructed. There has been a serious increase in incursion incidents.
Watch the very beginning of the clip. JAL519 was fully on the ground first. The nose was already down at impact.
I've also heard the JAL had approach clearance, but not landing clearance. Could be JAL, Coast Guard, or ATC. Lessons will be learned, I guess.

What is going on in japan
JL516 was normal landing but unaware of the military plane MA722 that was loaded with disaster relief to the earthquake region. Probably a result of miscommunication. 5 dead on MA722, pilot injured.
From what I understood the military plane was told to hold. What's unclear if they followed that instruction or if the plane landing misunderstood something. It could be that they were all correct and just some sort of oversight. A similar thing happened in Los Angles and it was found that not everyone had a clear picture of what was going on so no one was really at fault.
@@Dan-di9jdno, it is NEVER the case that no one was wrong and everyone was correct. How could you possibly believe such a thing when two planes with hundreds of people have crashed into each other? Aviation communication is so important and critical that an “oversight” while in other occupations might be trivial, in aviation it’s a major major fault. Either one of pilots used the runway without permission or ATC cleared both to use the runway. “Some sort of oversight” is the understatement of the millennium
That's right. It's all about professionalism and precision. @@jamie123b

All Passengers and Crew aboard the A350-900 were all accounted for. Only the hull was lost. Can't say the same for the Dash-8, though.
@@pedrosoandrew The turboprop is the fatality. It still counts even if the engine eats ground personell. But it's unlikely to have a negative effect on Airbus sales or JAL bookings.

This is *not* how to start the new year. First the earthquake, and now this. 😔
is there a longer video available, that shows more from the time BEFORE the crash? when did the D8 pull into the runway? before or AFTER touchdown of the Airbus?
This surveillance footage so it would go back as long as you want.
But before. It would be moving so slowly if at all that it would have no time to make it onto the rubway after the Airbus touched down, that was only 2-3 seconds before impact. And planes taxi at about 20 -40 kph. Usually a lot slower when lining up with the runway, maybe 2-3 knots (x2 for kph).

Stop light was out of order.
the light must have both go(blue) and stop(red) lights.
Irrelevant. The Dash 8 was told to hold at C5. And when the lights are out of order, you are supposed to verify your clearance to cross the lines. The Dash 8 pilot was solely at fault.

Why was there another aircraft on an active runway. I presume the aircraft controllers knew the A-350 was cleared for landing. Why was the Japanese coast guard Q-400 on the same runway?
according to other reports the A350 was cleared for landing and the coast guard was told to hold short of the runway it was landing on
it was very likely to be pilot error and miscommunication on the coast guard’s side
Q300
I've heard the Airbus was only cleared for approach. @@papyfun5097
Well that's what a runway incursion is, a plane is not where it's supposed to be on an active runway. To happen several things had to go wrong there are many safeguards so multiple systems and procedures had to fail. A single issue or mistake can't lead to this. How it happened is always different. Took a wrong turn. Misinterpreted ATC etc... the investigation will show what happened here but it'll take 6 months at least. They have all the recorders and both Captains survived and there's footage so the reason will be found and published in the report. Likely the FAA will do their own investigation, considering how many close calls happened with runway incursions in the US last year. Many have been calling for increased regulation and safeguards to prevent runway incursions and now exactly ehat they've been warning has happened and it's hard to believe it wasn't a Tenerife. That everyone on the A350 survived. Because ask anyone 3 days ago what happens when a giant jet plows into a still pretty big regional jet, the answer would be few if any survivors. So maybe this time it won't take a hangar full of coffins for action to be taken. Then again it's possible nothing is done and it happens again with a very different outcome and then the safety recommendations come. This has happened several times. Crash happens, a few fatalities. Not much happens. Then repeat but hundreds are dead and now someone does something (the FAA puts out directives). It's also surprising it happened where it did. Everyone thought it would happen at a smaller airport that doesn't have all the safety systems and safeguards to prevent this unlike Tokyo Haneda, which has all the fanciest equipment and very well trained crews. The earthquake was the first factor. The turboprop crew likely had been working a lot in the previous day, maybe fatigue is a factor. It often is. Performance drops off under stress and fatigue but still there's several layers of protection to prevent this even if a pilot takes a wrong turn or exit or disobeys ATC instructions. There's always redundant safeguards, so a lot went wrong for the Dash 8 to line up without clearance. That's a big one. Special clearance for entering the runway exists precisely to avoid this and it is drilled into every pilot along with a slide show of Tenerife and hundreds of dead and two burnt out 747s. But it still happens. 2023 had the highest number of close calls in runway incursions in the US with around 50 incidents, 10 being considered serious close calls. A few came within 100 feet of each other and a few aborted takeoffs, and a few overlying ann active rubway at very low altitude. The sort of go around, where appeals to higher powers are made by passengers and crew alike, with the engines redlining and some pretty high g forces. So it was only a matter of time and while 2023 had 10 incursions up to February, 2024 made it all the way to the second day before it actually happened. There's 379 extremely lucky people and one guy who probably won't feel great about himself for the rest of his life. Lucky for him they made it. It could have easily ended with the Cpt. if the Dash 8 being the only survivor and possibly at fault. That's not an enviable position. Still 5 perished behind him, that's still among the worst case scenarios being the only survivors of your command. He's done as a pilot. Even if someone else fked up, as the Captain he is responsible for everyone's actions in the crew. That's why the 4 bars on the shoulders, nicer hat and bigger pay.
